Christmas Day alternative lunch suggestions

Just DP and I for Christmas Day lunch, what would you have to eat? Or if you already do an alternative to the traditional dinner, what do you have?

We'll probably have bacon rolls or smoked salmon bagels for breakfast and will have had a buffet lunch on Christmas Eve with family. I'm not keen on slaving away at the oven for hours but don't mind an hour or so. Not bothered about roasts or traditional casseroles.

Thanks for any ideas!

honestly just cook your favourite meal and have that. We’ve had Xmas paella before and it was great

gillybean2 · 25/10/2022 21:18

We have whatever we fancy. Make sure you have plenty for left overs later, or snack stuff. I made the mistake once if only cooking enough for lunch then had to cook again for dinner. Now I always make sure we have plenty of snacks, cheese and pudding to have later in the day/evening.

FallHappy1 · 25/10/2022 21:45

I'd just have a cheese board with some continental meats, some nice chutneys, grapes.

mdh2020 · 25/10/2022 21:47

We like pizza with all the sides but will go to my elderly mother and take Lidl vegetarian wellingtons, roast potatoes and sprouts.

FawnDrench · 25/10/2022 21:48

Steak

Needmorelego · 25/10/2022 21:51

Scampi and chips or fish fingers and chips...or maybe scampi and fish fingers with chips.

Zleep · 25/10/2022 23:08

Chateaubriand, chips and fancy salad.

Fivemoreminutes1 · 26/10/2022 05:59

Cheese fondue

Mumdiva99 · 26/10/2022 06:03

I had nachos and fajita one year, a cheese board with fancy stuff would be my dream this year, duck breasts and dauphinoise potatoes......have whatever you like....

HappyKoala56 · 26/10/2022 06:08

Every year we haven't had visitors, me DH and the kids have chosen our favourite meal instead. Me and DH usually have steak and chips, think the kids have had pizza and spaghetti Bolognese.

blusteryshowersaway · 26/10/2022 06:53

We are having beef Wellington.

Ihavedogs · 26/10/2022 08:20

Due to covid, we have had the last two years on our own for the first time ever. Personally I would have loved to have had something alternative to eat, but DH (who was doing the cooking) wanted traditional Christmas food.

We have a contingency plan for this year in case things go pear shaped at the 11th hour and we end up on our own and will be having pies from the freezer with chips and peas.

If I was planning on the two of us again this year, I would opt for something that we don’t eat regularly and can be cooked on the day fairly quickly. So perhaps a Lasagne that just needed heating up with garlic bread and some greens or salad.

YorkieTheRabbit · 26/10/2022 09:27

Last year I made a curry.
Haven’t thought about food for Christmas Day yet.

AdaColeman · 26/10/2022 09:37

Fillet steak and cauliflower cheese is a combination you don't often see, but it really is a flavour match made in heaven.
Or
Still on the steak theme, slice up the steak and make stroganoff, delicious with its creamy sauce. Serve it with rice or buttered tagliatelle.

ChaosMoon · 26/10/2022 11:54

Venison casserole. Maybe with a puff pastry top to turn it into a pot pie.

olympicsrock · 26/10/2022 11:58

We are having crackling pork with roast potatoes apples sauce and lots of sides. Favourite meal time…

mileaminnie · 26/10/2022 12:10

Buratta, tomato salad to start
Fillet steak, dauphinois potatoes, green salad for mains
Pavlova for pudding.

Not Christmassy at all but that's the menu for DH and I this year if he is around. It's possible he will be in hospital in isolation after stem cell transplant so if it's just me on my own I will get a nice cheese (époisses), crusty bread, chutney and drown my sorrows with a full bottle of champagne. Might even get some lobster (DH doesn't eat shellfish)

Kids are going to mums with their cousins cos determined that they won't be having yet another shite Xmas Smile

bananaboats · 26/10/2022 13:47

We never have the traditional Christmas Dinner, we just have whatever we fancy! In previous years we have gone out for a Chinese and an Indian. Cooking at home have had steak, salmon, a nice chicken dish. Always do a nice cheese board for nighttime

goldfinchonthelawn · 26/10/2022 13:51

If it was only DH and me for Christmas lunch, and he didn't mind, I'd just want all the extras that you have at Christmas: home made soup, good stilton and cheddar with crackers, grapes, fig chutney, walnuts in their shells, with a fresh leafy salad, clementines, mince pies or Christmas cake, chocolates. I love that sort of buffet food at Christmas.

tootrueblue · 26/10/2022 18:24

Some great ideas, thank you!

Loving these ideas. I was going to suggest either steak or salmon.

CourtneeLuv · 22/11/2022 19:30

I'm tempted to go out to an Indian restaurant.

Although we will probably have it at home and have croissants if I can find bake at home ones, or bread, ham, piccalilli, left over from the Xmas eve ham. Or bacon sandwiches, for breakfast and lamb or beef, roast potatoes, yorkies, stuffing balls, pigs in blankets and maybe peas as a token vegetable. Then whatever dessert I think looks nice in the shop. I don't make desserts. Or maybe individual Xmas puddings & custard. Possibly stollen.

Anoooshka · 22/11/2022 19:34

I either do beef carbonnade (made with Belgian beer), potato gratin and red cabbage, or duck breast. The carbonnade is great as you can make it a few days in advance and the taste improves, or even freeze it in portions. Duck breasts are really easy and quick to cook and feel special because we don't eat duck very often. Dessert is always tiramisu, homemade.

Crabwoman · 22/11/2022 19:37

I would have lobster, baked camembert, crusty bread, pigs in blankets and Christmas pudding.

PeloFondo · 22/11/2022 19:43

Me and my dad are going to an Indian restaurant which we do every year
