American girl Doll

My 7 year old DD has asked for a American girl doll. The price of one doll is eye watering, are they really worth that much? I know our generation dolls are the Uk equivalent but she has her heart set on AG doll.

I know I cannot buy the doll in the UK and I can’t see an option on the American website either. Has anyone bought one before if so where did you get them from?

Thanks, I just wish I'd been able to get a Sapphire Splendour doll as she's beautiful! I just couldn't justify the cost. Hopefully she'll be still available for less in 2023 or secondhand perhaps :)

Well, he's not covering import taxes - surely that's factored in to what you paid? I think MDC charge £175 for one doll. So that's about the same isn't it? I wasn't aware of this retailer though so I will definitely have a look at that one.

Re: the change in law, it's confusing but this is what AG emailed to me;

'“Thank you for choosing American Girl. We will be happy to ship an order to you in the United Kingdom; however, to comply with UK tax rules implemented on January 1, 2021, the minimum order for product is $200.”

Apparently, when all of the rules changed around Brexit, the government took the opportunity to make changes to ordering from countries outside the EU as well. Thanks Brexiteers 🙃

Ah, so I think Simon's Collectibles functions much like MDC. So you can order much less from them via AG than $200 worth but it's a lot more expensive in terms of price per item. As I said before, MDC quoted me £400 for 4 items compared with £300 for 8 items when I ordered directly from AG. However, I should think that if anything goes wrong it's harder to rectify ordering directly. And I spent 3 weeks worrying as someone people steal stuff from packages whilst they are in transit. 🙈

I got one on Ebay for £50 including postage. Some on there are still boxed although they will be more expensive.

For those questioning the $200 minimum order thing, it's real and not just an excuse. Since Brexit, companies outside the UK selling goods to individuals in the UK have to register with UK HMRC for VAT and charge UK VAT on orders under a certain amount (can't remember the exact value). It means the customer doesn't have to pay import charges but is a pain in the arse for the foreign company having to file VAT returns in the UK. They don't have to do this for larger orders as the customer pays the VAT as customs charges.
Simon's Collectibles will be importing as a business, not a consumer so the rules are different, hence why they can offer smaller orders.

MDC didn't have the exact one we wanted

If postage is with the US postal service then run to the hills!!!!! My friend sent me a tracked parcel costing $135 which had a lovely holiday in Qatar for five months before finally arriving at my house squashed almost flat.

Yes, my parcel was sent via USPS and was damaged. It looked at though someone had sat on it. Severely dented some of the boxes.

Our daughter is also obsessed with an American Doll and desperate for their ‘one of a kind’ collection which is their bespoke ‘create your own doll’. The UK website (my doll collection) doesn’t cater for this. Has anyone else managed to order this type of doll? (does American doll ship internationally and are there likely taxed on top?) Any tips greatly received as we have a birthday at the end of the month!! 😊

I received an email today from American Doll Company to advise that My Doll Company is a (in their words) ‘fake’ producer and they have nothing to do with the company. If you email customer service at ADC they will confirm the same. Worth knowing peeps as google had me believe they were a UK distributor
