American girl Doll

Mumofgirls12341 · 17/10/2022 10:00

My 7 year old DD has asked for a American girl doll. The price of one doll is eye watering, are they really worth that much? I know our generation dolls are the Uk equivalent but she has her heart set on AG doll.

I know I cannot buy the doll in the UK and I can’t see an option on the American website either. Has anyone bought one before if so where did you get them from?

Try that uk shop link above mydollcollection.co.uk , it does them. I thought our generation dolls were American girl dolls haha! My poor daughter has been short changed, she got the our generation dolls, I didn't realise American girl was a different brand of dolls 😳 really shocked at these prices!

Me too, I never realised until this thread 😂

My DD has mentioned a few times but I’ve never taken any notice! I feel bad now, I’ve been to the US on work trips quite a few times over the years and could have got one! Oh well she is a teen now!

mathanxiety · 18/10/2022 04:32
  • better quality than Our Generation dolls.

Sorry, my post made no sense.

LynetteScavo · 18/10/2022 06:57

I think with American Girl Dolls it's the experience of buying them that is so much fun. I nearly bought DD one when she was 4, but she wasn't with me (and I couldn't get an exact mini of DD because they didn't have her eyes and hair colour with no fringe and I'm a bit anal).

There is now the option to design your own doll so that it can be exactly like your child.

Have you tried Amazon.com with shipping to the UK? It looks like I can get one sent from US to AUS for less than $200 AUD. Sorry I can’t check for the UK but the exchange rate it looks Ike it could be £110 or thereabouts.

I have just tried this and it works out much cheaper. Thank you so much for the suggestion. Only thing is my daughter wanted the one that looked like her which Amazon don’t sell. I’ll just get her the one that resembles her the most

It has always been like that
My DD is 30 and she went to AG in NYC and designed her own as a child.

No, there was a period of time where they stopped doing this. At least online they did. They had a range of ‘Truly Me’ but complete customisation wasn’t available online back in 2013-2016

LynetteScavo · 18/10/2022 21:52

Oooh, you can customise your own doll online - I just made a perfect mini DD!

LynetteScavo · 18/10/2022 21:53

But I didn't buy it because it was £££££££££ Grin

MrJi · 18/10/2022 22:02

My dd had these dolls, the Sarah doll and a few of her friends.
They were horrendously expensive but I have since occasionally seen one in TKMaxx. I bought her a limited edition one from there one Christmas. The dolls are phthalate free and the clothes and accessories are amazing. Really worth looking if you have a TKMax near you . Sarah is a very similar size to the American Girl dolls .

MrJi · 18/10/2022 22:03

Oh annoyingly it won’t paste. It is the Sarah doll by Gotz.

ITSSSSCHRISTMASSS · 18/10/2022 22:32

My DD was given one as a gift, it was from TKMaxx. I’m assuming it wasn’t too expensive given the gifter, but I never checked. I’ve never noticed a difference with her OG dolls but I’m not a doll person so never really looked too closet them.

EHopes · 18/10/2022 22:35

There is a massive quality difference between American girl and our generation. Less so with clothing - and the OG clothing and accessories can be used with the American girl dolls easily.

My daughter received a new doll for her birthday from 7-12 each year as that is what she most wanted. 2 are American girl dolls, one my father brought back from the US when he went on a business trip and the other I picked up on Facebook marketplace. I've also ended up with 3 of my own. Blush

If your child is older you might also want to look at the girl for all time dolls (a uk brand) and Ruby red dolls. Both slightly smaller but very good quality.

I have a very strong preference for the historical line, and for clothing and stories set in the past. The AG series were among the first 'historical fiction' I read aloud to my children. If you or your child has an interest in fashion or history choosing a historical character and then slowly adding to her collection can be fun. Our dolls tend to time travel - so when DD12 had a pride and prejudice couple of months a few went the full Jane Austen route. And the AGFOT (a girl for all time doll) that I received for my 40th is dressed in Tudor finery and was helpful to me when I wanted to discuss the musical six with my girl.

FindingMyself1999 · 18/10/2022 22:35

My response : sorry DD can’t get them in this country let’s have a look for an OG one. End of convo.

Sorry but I think that is so mean. If you can afford it why not buy the thing they most want? Children are children for such a short time and it means a whole lot to get the one thing you want for Christmas. And AG dolls are special. So much so that they have a massive following of adult collectors.

I don’t have the heart to do that.

Thought I would give a update.

I placed my order today on the American Girl website.

The total of my order was $286 and shipping for 6 items was $78. There is currently a 20% off orders above $150 promotion, this bought my total down to $303 which is £268 (this is excluding tax)

I did look into purchasing from the UK website mydollcollection but the total for all 6 items came to £447. Which is considerably more then what I paid to order direct from US.

I’m sure your dd will love this @Mumofgirls12341 you’re a very kind mum to want to make her dreams come true. It’s interesting to find out that it’s cheaper to order directly, now.

There is a uk seller. Mydollcollection.co.uk

Have you tried Facebook market place. Got one for DD from there (complete with some accessories and original AG bag and box). Still eye watering but less than half what it would have cost. I was also looking at this website which says it ships to uk but didn't end up using it: mydollcollection.co.uk/AG-of-the-Year/girl-of-the-year-2022-corinne
I can tell a slight different between Ag and OG dolls but not enough to justify the price difference if I'm being honest. I guess that's not the point when it's a much wanted Xmas present though!

Mydollcollection are in the UK. They're in North Yorkshire

mrs55 · 22/10/2022 16:55

I just bought our generation and she thought is was an American girl doll, when I last looked you could buy them on there and ship to uk might of changed now though.

MrsMitford3 · 22/10/2022 16:56

@Mumofgirls12341 if it is any consolation my DD (now at Uni) adored hers and played with her for years and years. She also wanted the look alike one.

You can get lots of outfits-she had christmas dresses and other cute things form ppl who make them and are very reasonably priced. Think I got mine on ebay?

MightyOaks · 22/10/2022 17:17

@Mumofgirls12341 May I ask how you processed the order please? I've just put an order together on Americangirl.com for $264 and it won’t allow me to ship to the UK!? Did you use the PayPal option?

Sorry I should have said. I had to call them on 001-800772-0430. You can’t place an order on the website for some reason
