Babies first Christmas

What have you bought your baby for their first Christmas? Baby will be 6months old & have no idea what to buy him. Don’t want to go overboard as they won’t remember it but also don’t want to get them nothing or cheap, tatty shit. Did you buy them something for when they’re a bit older? Something personalised for them to keep? Really stuck for ideas. Thanks!

Mine will be five months and DP and I won’t buy him anything. Relatives will I’m sure.

He currently doesn’t even understand he has hands, I’m not confident that he’ll grasp the symbolism of gifting and Christian theology by December.

A lovely jellybean teddy.

Baby’s first Christmas

RockAndRollerskate · 10/10/2022 12:08

My DS was 9m on his first Christmas - we got him a small token gift, family got him loads.

He spent the entire day playing with a silicone broom I’d gotten out to sweep with first thing.

Yousee · 10/10/2022 12:31

DS will be 4 months and I've got him the following:

  • Personalised stocking, wooden Christmas box and baby's first Christmas bauble
  • crinkly cloth book
  • That's not my Reindeer board book (for the Christmas box, which will come out next few years and be added to books passed down from DS1s box)
  • Freddie the Firefly high chair toy
  • Grimm's rainbow rattle
  • Elf ragdoll

That's his lot. Won't be wasting my space storing things for him to grow into for the sake of it, he can get things when he needs them as he doesn't know the difference. DS1 would not be pleased if his baby had naff all from Santa though!

MrsT84 · 10/10/2022 12:36

My baby DD will be 8 months old and I am going to get similar to what we got our son for his first Christmas - he was only 3 weeks old! A personalised book, a silver moneybox and for DD a lovely rag doll. DS has also chosen a toy that he wants to give DD from him.

FallHappy1 · 10/10/2022 13:21

My youngest will be 6 months by Christmas. Have asked politely for family and friends not to buy toys only clothes in bigger sizes. So we'll get a few toys for her from santa (I have 1 son who still believes so he'd be suspicious if she didn't receive anything!) So far we've agreed on a jumparoo and a couple of books and maybe some vtech toys.

abitunsureaboutthis · 10/10/2022 13:26

We have a tradition that my partner and I every year get to buy a new bauble each for the tree. The tree therefore has loads of personality, and lots of 'remember when's. It is a bit of a hotchpotch, but we like it. We will buy one for our baby this year, but hopefully next year they will pick their own. Nothing else really. Perhaps make baby a stocking.

Stag82 · 10/10/2022 13:27

Mine will only be 10 weeks old… we have a really big family… I’ll get something to wear, something to play with and something to read.

Twizbe · 10/10/2022 13:30

I got clothes that I would have got anyway.

As they will be 6 months how about some weaning stuff?

LT2 · 10/10/2022 13:35

My DS will be 11 months old. Going by what he likes now I've decided I'll get:
A touch and feel Christmas book
Socks
A ceiling light projector
Light up bath toys

I don't want to get a lot as I know our families will get him gifts. If rather save the money for future Christmases, when he'll be excited about it! No doubt the wrapping paper and packaging will keep him amused this year.

IggyAce · 10/10/2022 13:40

DD is now 16 but for her first Christmas she was 3months we got her a beautiful first Christmas bauble from mama’s & papa’s and a drop & roar dinosaur.

ITSSSSCHRISTMASSS · 10/10/2022 19:37

When my oldest was born it was the year of a quite significant event in my home town, we got her a special commemorative bauble & cuddly bear. We got the usual 1st Christmas onesie that we kept.

Blossom45 · 10/10/2022 19:45

My little one will be 3 month at Christmas and we plan to get her a personalised wooden toy box, books and some bits for when she’s weening/other essentials.

BuffaloCauliflower · 10/10/2022 19:47

My baby was born in November and for his first Christmas we bought basically all his main toys for the year. Various nice wooden toys, some books.

gretr · 10/10/2022 19:51

We bought a gold Christmas decoration, it was a Georg Jensen one with the year on it. Family bought other presents, but they had no idea what was going on (6m). We also started a child savings account and put a bit extra in there. Our family were pretty good and didn’t buy lots of tat, they asked what we needed and just contributed to the savings account. Unless it’s practical stuff, it’s a bit of a waste of money and resources. Just take lots of lovely pictures and videos, they’ll appreciate them more when they get older rather than lots of toys they’ll only play with a bit.

PuttingDownRoots · 10/10/2022 19:52

We got her stuff that could be used every year. Stocking, bauble, nativity set, nativity Board book. And a cute little elf outfit to wear. Dd2 got a Christmas music box.

Then DH got the twitch and bought a ride on electric train. (Which was used for several years before we sold it.).

mondaytosunday · 10/10/2022 19:54

My son was five months and don't think we got him anything. If we did it probably was a toy and book (I did story time every night from birth, even if was just something silly I made up).

BonesOfWhatYouBelieve · 10/10/2022 19:59

We got DD a nice wooden toy box. She obviously didn't care (she was 6 months old) but we wanted somewhere to put her toys. We did a stocking that contained some balls like the link below (these were a big hit!), a book, and maybe a teddy or something.

LittleOwl153 · 10/10/2022 20:06

My 4 month old got a highchair with squeeky toys etc, so she could sit at the table for Xmas Dinner.

If you don't have older kids then I wouldn't go OTT, they will know no difference. You can ask other relatives to contribute to a savings account this year or buy a family pass for somewhere... the zoo etc..

DS was approaching his first birthday on his first Christmas but the best thing we got was a baby photo book. Its a mini photo album containing pictures of him and his family. He loved it

Coffeaddict · 10/10/2022 21:07

My mum got him an engraved christmas tree decoration that we still have

Sonyo · 10/10/2022 21:52

DD will be 4 months, and she's getting a stocking and some board books. The only things I have for the stocking are a cube rattle, a teether, a knitted bonnet, and some slipper booties. We still have a lot left over from DS that can go in.

Sn0tnose · 10/10/2022 22:03

We’ll have an eleven month old in our family this Christmas, who is also our Godson. I will freely admit that DH and I have gone bonkers (with permission from mum and dad) and neither of us are sorry. I’m currently weighing up whether we have enough space to store one of those little red cars with the yellow roofs, as his mum and dad definitely don’t and I’ve already pushed my luck a bit with a three foot lime green Triceratops.

My favourite things are the things that will be brought out for him each year though. A wooden tree bauble, a handmade stocking, a personalised present sack I made with a Cricut machine, a Christmas Eve box (just a wooden box from Hobbycraft that his dad has drawn his name on and I’ve added some designs in pyrography) and a really beautiful copy of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas’. I’ve also booked a pottery painting session for me and his mum where she’s going to make him a plate to put out for Father Christmas each year and I’m going to make his handprint into a Christmas tree to go on a mug as a gift from him to his nan. And his mum is on the lookout for a really nice wooden stool for him and I’ll pyrograph his name and date of birth on it. We’ve also booked a couple of outings for him (a light trail which he will be obsessed with, and meeting Father Christmas, which he won’t give a shit about but his mum will love).
