Babies first Christmas

What have you bought your baby for their first Christmas? Baby will be 6months old & have no idea what to buy him. Don’t want to go overboard as they won’t remember it but also don’t want to get them nothing or cheap, tatty shit. Did you buy them something for when they’re a bit older? Something personalised for them to keep? Really stuck for ideas. Thanks!

I was just thinking about this today! Baby OMG will be 5 months. I don’t think DH and I will get him much but I wanted to get him a couple of bits for him (or rather us!) to open.
I’ve seen a cute teether and was thinking we might get a wooden toy for when he’s older.

After reading through this thread I like the idea of a “night before Christmas” book, which we could get out every year for a while. And perhaps a bauble with his name on it or a personalised stocking.

He obviously won’t care but it would feel weird if we didn’t get him anything. If family ask what to get him then I’m thinking clothes or toys for when he’s a little older.

Think of your baby's next toy phase and buy them bits for "Christmas". You aren't wasting money a s you would've bought them anyway. Does that make sense?

aus12 · 11/10/2022 14:05

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.
Thinking I might get a personalised stocking, Christmas book & a baby walker for him to use when he’s on the move next year.

Mine was only 2 months old so got her a personalised book and tree ornament that can both be used every year, and some clothes. She won’t get loads this year either, probably a couple of toys.

Mine will be five months and DP and I won’t buy him anything. Relatives will I’m sure.

He currently doesn’t even understand he has hands, I’m not confident that he’ll grasp the symbolism of gifting and Christian theology by December.

Bet you’re fun at parties

This made me laugh an unreasonable amount.

I got things that can come out each year and become part of a tradition. Personalised Santa sack, tree bauble, Christmas book…

Ginxx · 11/10/2022 20:42

Ds will be 7 months and I've got him

Personalised stocking, jumperoo, my pal scout and tomy eggs. I know he won't remember this Christmas but would still like to make it special x

We got DD a nice wooden toy box. She obviously didn't care (she was 6 months old) but we wanted somewhere to put her toys. We did a stocking that contained some balls like the link below (these were a big hit!), a book, and maybe a teddy or something.

@BonesOfWhatYouBelieve those balls are amazing. I bought them for my son when he was about 6 months old and he still plays with them now and he's nearly 3

MsSquiz · 11/10/2022 20:47

My first daughter was 1 week old on her first Christmas and we got her:
An outfit for Christmas Day
A wedgewood bauble
Some baby books
Matchstick monkey teether toy
A Jellycat Elf
The night before Christmas book which we read every Christmas Eve.

This year my 2nd daughter will be 8 months and she will also get a wedgewood bauble, as well as some clothes, cuddly toy & books

DD was 5 months and we got her some stacking cups (used for years afterwards), maracas (she loved them in a baby group) and a cloth ball to roll around with a bell inside.

Her grandparents gave us money towards a Tripp Trapp we bought in the Boxing Day sale. My mum got her some books with good-night stories.

She had lots of fun with the wrapping paper and the boxes.

feathersandslats · 12/10/2022 07:52

Dd was nearly 1 on her first Christmas. We got her a first Christmas bauble, a stocking that she still has now and an indoor swing.

Mommabear20 · 12/10/2022 07:54

Our DD was 6 months and our DS was 5 months at their first Christmas, so we tended to stick to things they needed as they were only really bothered about tearing the paper! 😂
So they got clothes in the next size up, toothbrushes, a jumperoo etc.

This baby will only be a few weeks old at Christmas so I've stuck to things that her older siblings already have that are 'matching' so that she has the same as them. It's far more than we'd have bought for either of the older too but it's only so she isn't left out in the future, when they've got tonnes of matching stuff and she doesn't.

PinkHeadphones · 12/10/2022 07:56

My oldest was two months old his first Christmas, I don’t recall getting him anything, others got him clothes mostly, plus some baby toys. His gran got him a lovely memory box, wooden with a painted lid.
The youngest was eight months his first Christmas and we had to buy him a stocking and a present or his brother would have been upset! I remember the stocking had weaning stuff - bibs, bowl, spoon - apple flavoured rice cakes which he liked, a soft car toy, a That’s Not My book. His present from us was a tunnel to crawl through.

MagpiePi · 12/10/2022 08:00

All the scrunched up wrapping paper from the presents your DH has bought you for being an amazing mum. 😁

Hi @aus12 Thanks for posting. I just wanted to pop in and share the link to our article on the best baby toys for 6-12 months. You might find it useful when Christmas shopping for your daughter. Our guide was created with the help of recommendations from Mumsnet users and researching consumer reviews. Do let us know if you found the page helpful.

@aus12 Trying again. Apologies! 😳 Best baby toys for 6-12 months

Snugglemonkey · 14/11/2022 19:41

My baby will be 3 or 4 weeks old. If it were not for her big brother, we would probably not bother. He would be v unimpressed if Santa failed to come for her though, so she is getting a personalised stocking and Santa sack. In them will be things she needs anyway, like a swimming costume, float, clothes, a teether etc. Her "main" present is a sling. He might not be very impressed, but I don't see the point in lots of toys, such a waste!

chineapplepunks · 14/11/2022 19:43

I will have a nearly 8 month old DD at christmas. Her main present is a ball pit, she also has some wooden blocks and stacking rings.

AllThatAndMore · 15/11/2022 06:47

When my 2 month old had his first Christmas I filled a stocking with nappies 😆! I don’t even know if I bought him anything now that I think about it but he had tons of presents from family and friends to “open”!

ChristmasCwtch · 15/11/2022 07:10

I had a 3 month old at Christmas. We bought a stocking, books, teething toy, sippy cup, socks, squeeky eggs, some stacking boxes etc.

All things that would have bought a couple of months later.

Little one also received a ton of presents from family that BIL ended up opening on the morning, so he had a fun time too 😂

Dramaalpacas · 25/12/2022 22:29

DD has an older half-sister so had to be seen to get a stocking from Santa. I think I filled it with clothes, hats, bath toys, baby shampoo etc.. stuff she needed. I can’t remember if I bought her a present as such. Possibly wrapped up the beautiful little outfit I’d bought her.
