what are you getting your 10 year olds?

This is the styling head I bought for my DD.

SafeHeaven · 07/10/2022 22:03

I thought I would be on to something then with the hair styling thing, asked dd and she said no 🙄.

she already has…..

alexa
apple watch
plenty of art stuff
plenty of pjs
a dressing gown
plenty of clothing
a Polaroid camera
sky in her bedroom
hair dryer
plenty of books
an ipad
fidget toys (doesn’t both with these anymore)
Squishmallows plus 3 squishvilles

she’s not into styling her hair. Dh is against make up at this age so that’s out.

shes has asked for jelly babies 🤣

DS1 is getting some Copic markers (a combined present from us and both sets of grandparents as they cost a fortune!) and some new sketch pads and colouring books to go with them. We'll probably also get some little bits like a new bed set and some books so he's got more to open.

SafeHeaven · 07/10/2022 22:12

Wow! Those markers are really expensive, what’s so special about them?

fatgirlslimmer · 07/10/2022 22:13

Just started shopping for a 10 year old boy.

deluxe scrabble
new headphones
hot chocolate bombs
all from Costco

Lion King tickets

whereareyousleep · 07/10/2022 22:42

Mini fridge for her bedroom maybe

DinosaurOfFire · 07/10/2022 23:19

@SafeHeaven Im not the poster who mentioned the Copics, but they are professional quality alcohol markers that are generally used by graphic designers, illustrators and artists, they need specialist papers and so on, and they blend very well- they are excellent quality and last a long time if looked after (kept flat, lids clipped on etc). Some types are refillable too. I prefer the Windsor Newton Promarkers myself because a: they're cheaper and b: I prefer a bullet nib to a brush nib. Copics are excellent though!

CaptainCallisto · 08/10/2022 18:16

Yes, Dinosaur has summed it up better than I could have. DS is autistic and completely obsessed with drawing. Also reading, so he spends hours drawing characters and scenes from his books. He's been asking for copics for a couple of years now, and he's taken really good care of the cheaper ones we bought, so we decided now was the time!

Stompythedinosaur · 09/10/2022 17:05

My 9yo (who is 10 just after Christmas) is getting tickets to Harry Potter and the Cursed Child as a main present, smaller presents are a water speaker, neon message frame, a bullet journal and some graphic markers.

My elder DD was 10 last Christmas, hots for her were an oodie, posca pens and ticket to the Strictly live show.

I've also considered merch from the you tubers they watch - Moriah Elizabeth is dd2's current favourite.

TheChosenTwo · 09/10/2022 17:12

My 10yo ds has a birthday in November, he’s recently got a phone (for walking home in year 6) and turns 11 in a few weeks.
He has recently made a list of all the things he might like:
speaker for his room
new guitar strings
new guitar (electric)
games for his console
trainers
clothes for the gym (he sometimes comes with me to the kids fitness sessions)
laptop (all their homework is now set online and the senior school he will go to asks them to have one 🧐)
Cool pencil
stickers
football shirt with player name on the back
books (lord knows why, he has shelves full of lovely new ones that he chose but only reads and re reads Harry Potter back to back!)
balloons
totoro teddy
new console and games

lots of other random bits and bobs - I like it though, there’s a good range of still on there and we have a large family on both sides who will ask for birthday and Christmas ideas for him too so it’s nice to have a choice!

EasilyDistracted77 · 09/10/2022 17:41

I also have a 10 yr old DD, she has a birthday not long after Christmas and I prefer to do big presents for birthday (she'll be getting a phone ready for secondary school for her 11th birthday).

For Christmas I try to give: something to do, something to read, something to eat, something to wear.

I've been getting things when I see something I know she'll like, so far: some funky leggings (far more than I'd usually pay but I know she'll love the design), a mini mosaic kit, Harry Potter Origami and joke book, a magnetic cube fidget-toy thing, a book set.

She loves animals, so her main gift might be an animal-related experience. Last year, she got a concert ticket (a whole family gift). I know it seems crap in terms of stuff to open, but it is generally 'experiences' now, padded out with small things to open.

sanityisamyth · 09/10/2022 17:49

DS(8) has just had a new saddle for his pony, scuba diving lessons, ice skating lessons and is going to Harry Potter Studios at half term. I'll get him some more Lego or something but not much!

JoJo2306 · 09/10/2022 18:09

My dd is 10 and I’m starting to think about Xmas. So far on the list I have:

Lush bath bombs
pj’s
book
NY baseball cap
nike trainers
Pandora ring If they are a small enough fit
table top easel/canvas/paints
clothes
tickets to a show
smellies

Purple52 · 09/10/2022 18:51

My DD is 12 in November.
similar age - but I appreciate older as y7 at school.
we don’t buy them Xmas presents. We have a theatre trip or holiday at Xmas that we call our family present.
FC brings £50 of stuff - including stationery top ups, books and other bits.
we don’t do big birthday presents.
my teen son recently had a bag of sweets for his birthday.
but they do have laptops, iPads, phones, bikes etc when they need them!
I don’t like the idea that a need for a big ticket item either comes too soon or they have to wait for a birthday/Xmas.
I also never liked the idea of having the expectation of a big spend every birthday and Xmas.

…. It also spreads the money out.

we make birthdays about doing stuff, a days out and a party with friends (sometimes with significant costs, often something at home, but not because it’s cheap, but because I can control the focus) not expensive gifts.

Martinisarebetterdirty · 10/10/2022 09:30

We like things to open on Christmas Day, and things to do, so mine are getting new rugs for their rooms (fluffy ones that they stroke each time we go shopping), bath bombs, new dressing gowns, always a jumper or a t shirt, jigsaws, books, a piece of nice jewellery (silver necklace for example), false nails, jewellery from Claire’s, the eldest will get an IOU for ear piercing at the start of the Easter holidays (starts high school next September and I want them properly healed), top trumps, diamond painting, Lego and lockable diaries. I’ll also probably put in some lip gloss and a nail polish.

Yoyo2021 · 30/11/2022 22:30

dancingqueen123 · 30/11/2022 22:38

EnglishGirlApproximately · 04/10/2022 08:53

I'm getting DS a laptop, its something he really wants and will be practical for secondary school. For some reason he enjoys making PPT presentations - mostly about pokemon or aliens 😁

Bless him 😊

Puddywoodycat · 01/12/2022 07:29

@LBOCS2 would you mind sharing the crafting bits eg clay?

Mine has small stuff!
Some makeup because her older sister is getting some and she will want some.

New hair brush/microfiber hair towel/ new set posca pens/ hot chocolate bomb/ molten brown cracker with some bath bubble's/ mini hair dryer/ sleeping queen's 2, to the rescue/ accentuates/ cat crimes/clothes...
There is no wow present this year, she wanted a vr headset....it's all small thing's and will look small as well .... not sure what else to get.

She loves her posca pens, Minecraft etc Roblox...maybe a gift card for those?

wejammin · 01/12/2022 08:12

10yo DS is getting a wallet, bank card and key to the front door (ready for High School), a 5x5 Rubiks cube, new joycons for his switch and a bike. He's easy to buy for.

8 yo DD is a nightmare, doesn't like toys and is very fussy. So far I've got her a fluffy hoodie, a bubble tea kit, a penguin squishmallow and some penguin PJs. I will be getting her one of those fluffy 'teddy' duvet covers, some fairy lights for her room, a label maker, and I'm going to print off a load of photos from the year and give her that with a blank scrapbook/washi tape/pens and stickers.

10yo DD - Sewing machine and lots of accessories (materials, books, sewing bag etc..) She’s also getting Beanie Boos, some art colouring things, paint by numbers set, draw your own comic, make up, clothes.

DD10 would also love what we are getting DD8, her own drawing table and lots of art supplies (sketching books, canvas books, paints, pencils & tools. Also Posca pens). She’s also getting a beanie boo, clothes, makeup, makeup case.

Ive also got George Ezra tickets for next year.

There is more but I can’t think right now.

The make up is more for messing and creating arty styles which they like to do.

Other things my 10yo loves, her switch, hair crimpers, her skate board & scooter.
