This could be a husband, parent, grandparents or friend?

Most adults don't particularly want anything as they but whatever they need.

What's your go to gift for people like this?

Females is perhaps go for a candle, males are harder, slippers perhaps. But both are quite plain gifts so looking for some other ideas.

If they don't want anything then don't give them anything - it's rude.

Icecolder · 02/10/2022 08:05

I know it is a cliche but most people will appreciate a nice pair of socks.
agree with nice food and drink-a few really good chocolates, luxury jam or chutney

Seabreeze18 · 02/10/2022 08:06

An experience voucher is nice! Some warm socks! Nice photo of family?

I actually hate Christmas for the stress of getting tons of presents for everyone! I would rather have nothing and give nothing in return but enjoy everyone’s company more.

i used to hate getting photoframes,
oh the decision and work involved

now get me a photo frame with a photo already in it!
that pleases me so much.

Consumables that you know they like such as a bottle of their favourite wine or spirit. Maybe a hamper of deli treats. Everyday clothing items that need replacing regards like socks, pj's, dressing gowns etc. Something to do, tickets to a show, afternoon tea etc. I don't think there can be one go to item, it has to depend on the person and what you know about them.

Enb76 · 02/10/2022 08:20

The gift of time. Depends how close they are but I generally try to find a concert or play I know they’d like and get tickets so we can go together.

FireballTwenty · 02/10/2022 08:21

Food and/or drink.

FruitPastilleNut · 02/10/2022 08:25

For the adults I buy for, I make a note (literally...in my phone) of any random things they express interest in through the year. I hate being stuck and having to scramble for generic gift things in Dec.

Last year, I bought my mum a stone set of the 3 monkeys (see/hear speak no evil) for the garden. It was a totally random, brief comment she made to me in about March whilst we were at Bingo and they had some just outside the entrance ('Oh look at those, they'd look lovely on my patio'). It's such a random gift and something she probably wouldn't have bought herself but was delighted with them plus I got kudos for 'remembering'...i didn't remember until Nov when I was shopping and there it was in my notes lol.

How often do these things really need replacing?

My dressing gown is 15+
My PJs - my youngest set is 4 or 5 years old and I am quite fussy on PJs

I usually put together a little hamper of biscuits, chocolate, bottle of wine if they drink. If they shop in a specific place I go with a voucher instead which seems to go down well.

KangarooKenny · 02/10/2022 08:34

I get so mad and upset when I’m bought stuff I don’t want, it’s such a waste of money and stuff. I was bought tickets to a show that I didn’t want to go to last year, so I gave them back.
I really don’t want anything.
My DM never wants anything so I but her some nice food/drink from M&S and make up a little hamper. That always goes down well.

Limer · 02/10/2022 08:35

Why not suggest that you all stop buying useless tat for each other? I'm sure everyone involved will be only too delighted to stop the madness.

midgetastic · 02/10/2022 08:35

"Seems to go down well"

How can you know ? We are always told we must receive all gifts grateful and with grace or it's rude

In my case she eats/drinks it all, so I go off that.
And I’ve reached the age where I don’t care what people think, I don’t ‘have’ to do anything.

Imissmoominmama · 02/10/2022 08:39

Friends- we go for a day out as our Christmas/birthday treat.

DH- I buy him a holiday (which I get to go on too!).

Im lucky in that my friends are of the same mind as me- there’s enough ’stuff’ in the world. I’d rather spend time with people.

Sunnysundays33 · 02/10/2022 08:42

Urgh yeah I hate all this buying shit we don't need, the kid's stuff is worse. Partners family bring giant gift bags, last year I asked them to tone it right down (they didn't) thing is dc gets so overwhelmed too.

And everyone is different so 'luxury jam and chutney, socks' no thanks

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 02/10/2022 08:43

Just buy something that can be eaten, drunk, put in the bath, or read.

Rosehugger · 02/10/2022 08:43

Consumables. People usually have some food or alcohol they like.

Put in the bath - I don't take baths

Or read - you will have no idea what I have already read or just don't want to read

EnglishPearFreesia · 02/10/2022 08:46

A nice meal, fine dining buyagift voucher. Lovely experiences are sometimes better than material possessions.

Ragwort · 02/10/2022 08:51

Agree with everyone else, just don't exchange gifts ... spend time together, having a meal or going to a film .. whatever you like to do. I volunteer in a Food Bank and the amount of 'luxury' Hamper donations & boxes of chocolates we get after Christmas never feels to amuse us ... and no, many of the items aren't really wanted by our FB clients anyway.

Lcb123 · 02/10/2022 08:51

I’d do a charity donation to a charity that’s meaningful to them, and then something edible

Pung · 02/10/2022 08:53

Nothing. Obviously.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 02/10/2022 08:56

honey

byvirtue · 02/10/2022 08:57
