Shall I get the tree down

ivykaty44 · 28/09/2022 22:07

I’m going to get home next week from a camping trip, so the equipment will be back in the attic. Whilst up there shall I just get every down and decorate for Xmas?

ir is it still early?

What on earth? No of course not. It won't feel special and magical by the time December rolls around if you put the tree up now. A month of decorations is long enough. As other people have said, enjoy autumn! Get some autumnal themed fairy lights, a wreath and a garland if you really want to decorate.

canyouextrapol · 29/09/2022 09:07

Maybe just get the fairy lights? I like fairy lights on a dark evening

Cleothecat75 · 29/09/2022 09:21

I’m always curious, when you say Christmas decorations, do you mean just a tree or do you decorate the house? A friend makes a massive fuss about decorating for Christmas after Halloween, but only ever puts a Christmas tree up. I know a lot of other people (including us) who decorate the house, have smaller trees in other rooms, garlands, festive ornaments etc. there’s no way I want all of that out for months on end.

Pushyoupullme · 29/09/2022 09:22

Get it down and shove it behind the sofa or under the stairs? Possibly. Put it up and decorate it? No.

girlmom21 · 29/09/2022 09:24

Get it down when you put the camping stuff back because we all know it'll sit in your boot for at least 6 weeks after the trip.

Pushyoupullme · 29/09/2022 09:24

Although decorating the tree and the house for Halloween/autumn is apparently a thing now so you could dress the tree with that theme and use any multipurpose lights etc for that and then redress and add more Christmassy bits in November? I wouldn't.

unfortunateevents · 29/09/2022 09:25

user6497219 · 29/09/2022 09:25

It will get very dusty by Christmas

Figgygal · 29/09/2022 09:26

To even think it is fucking insane
Don't be "that person"

DontSuitAJumpsuit · 29/09/2022 09:26

If you want to cheer the house up I'd go for Autumnal/Halloween decorations to take you through until at least November. That's still a month too early for me but might tide you over

Pushyoupullme · 29/09/2022 09:29

How can it be a special time if you have the decorations up for a quarter of the year (or more!).

Yes but it is the 3 months that I and a lot of other people find the worst as the nights draw in and the clocks change and it gets colder. And there are various other festivals occurring during these months too. So having some lights and decorations around can be nice.

Even though I don't do it myself I can see the appeal. Sort of.

Pushyoupullme · 29/09/2022 09:32

Don't be "that person"

There are so many worse ways to be "that person" than liking some decorations and subtle twinkly lights up a bit early.

Although if the OP's idea of decorating involves flashing lights that you can see from space that will lead to the neighbours not being able to sleep for 3 months then definitely don't be that person OP😬

PITA to try to dust

Bottled air. Like you use for computers.

PorridgewithQuark · 29/09/2022 09:34

Quite a lot of houses are decorated for autumn where I live - it's a very traditional rural area of a mainland European country. The decorations are mostly wooden and ceramic plus plants- ornamental goards and squashes and do on, and garlands often made of felt or other fabric if not wood. However there are also some fairy lights which don't look at all like Christmas lights in context.

Why not use your fairy lights either alone or with some autumn organic stuff, if you want to do cheering decoration.

Christmas stuff will be sad and tired after three whole months up, and you'll hardly register it's there by December.

mondaytosunday · 29/09/2022 09:39

Ha - all my Christmas stuff is in a storage unit and I'm going for a sort out in a couple weeks and thought about getting stuff out. However I'm certainly NOT thinking of putting the decs up - our tree is always real so we get it first weekend in December, and as much as I love Xmas, a month is the maximum amount of time I can tolerate Christmas decorations.
And I have decided, for the very reason I have a storage unit, that unless I want several boxes cluttering up my house then no, the decs will have to stay in storage for now.
But I did pass a house on my nightly dog walk earlier this week and they had what can only be Christmas fairy lights in the windows.

@Pushyoupullme

thank you for the reminder, I've got a camera puffer in the lift, I'll try to remember to get that down at the same time!

it'll help with the tiny ones on the tree. But it's a bit like Santas Grotto once I'm
done here. Too much faff too early!!

A few bugs me have the outside trees decorated already, and seen one decorated tree in a window.

that was about a week ago. Def after the Queen's funeral anyway.

We have some houses near me that go All Out, and a few streets that all the houses decorate. I'm wonder if they will this year with the electricity prices.

one has loads of moving things and music playing etc, they raise money (donation box) for a local charity. It cost them a fortune last year in electric. I hope they still do it this year and take the money out of the donations. The charity will get less money, but I think people will donate more too. I'm envious of the energy & ability they have to do it!!

Cheeselog · 29/09/2022 10:48

Way, way too early. Absolutely not before the start of advent at the earliest.

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 29/09/2022 10:57

DayOfTheTentacle · 29/09/2022 11:08

I have satiated my desire for Christmas by planning a second tree. I have a bag in the corner of the room and I keep buying little decorations and bits and lights for it. It's going to be my colourful tree (the front room one is the "tasteful" one. I'm trying to find vintage 80s looking baubles and have lights with pink bulbs in.

Basically what I'm saying is, whatever make you happy!

OP posts:

Why? Will it really make you happier? If it will then crack on.
I love Christmas but I only put the decorations up on December 18th and tree up on the 21st.

A Nightmare Before Christmas theme. Two birds, one stone!

Personally, it would be a little bit too early for me, but if it makes you happy and you won’t be itching to tear them down on Boxing Day, then crack on. Or you could put some fairy lights in a big glass vase or bowl, which might help you hold off for another couple of months.
