Hi all, my little ones first Christmas is approaching! ...but - his first birthday is also only 2 weeks after Christmas!

I need ideas on what to get him for both, so I'm wondering if anybody can tell me what they got their little one/s for their first Christmas and first birthday! (List it if you can 🤣)
Thanks in advance!

We only bought 1 thing for DD for 1st birthday and christmas as at 1 they have no clue whats going on and everyone else buys loads for them 🤦🏼‍♀️

We did a soft toy for christmas, it was iggle piggle from in the night garden, and toy was a toy tractor that made some noises from mothercare.

ChristmasSirens · 18/09/2022 10:25

Christmas - they really don’t need much! A cute sleep suit, some books. Buy yourselves a 1st Christmas bauble or something if you like.

1st birthday - again, just think of what you want to get them anyway. Depending on budget - Books, toddler slide, scuttlebug scooter, pickler triangle, xylophone, soft toy of their favourite animal.

roopeedoopeedooo · 18/09/2022 10:27

All 4 of my kids LOVED ball poppers from about 12-15 months. But yeah, no need to go over boards at all as we were inundated with gifts from family.

Oooh thank you!!! I've got him a few little toys already to put towards, just some mega bloks and a pull along Paddington so I'll have a look at books and 'first Christmas' stuff!! Xx

We did useful stuff…so plastic feeding kit etc. and yes, board books, bath toys etc etc.

Honestly, first two years the big boxes were the favourite bit!

Stompythedinosaur · 18/09/2022 10:31

Babies change so quickly, it can be good to think about what they will enjoy over the next year. Toys like ride ons and things to climb will soon become much used.

We got a wheelybug and a happyland bus which I both remember getting a lot of use.

Everydaywheniwakeup · 18/09/2022 10:36

DD's birthday is close to Christmas. When she was little ie not aware she was being swindled, I asked for some outdoor things. Though she couldn't use them through winter, it meant I had things for when the weather got warmer.
For her first birthday I got her one of those pop up tunnels to crawl through, which she loved.

BertieBotts · 18/09/2022 10:36

Get a balance board, they are brilliant. My 1yo loves crawling and climbing on it and my 4yo likes to use it as a bridge for toy cars or rock on it or curl up in it to watch TV.

Some kind of push along walker is a great first birthday gift.

Starter set of something like Duplo or Brio

Ride on toys are great at this age too.

Next size up clothing or winter wear

Next size up car seat (get people to contribute e.g. if you want one of the extended rear facing ones like Axkid Minikid) - this stage is the most cost-sensitive so makes sense to have as large a budget as you can.

YY to ball poppers - great. We have two ball toys from Bright Starts and both are favourites and the balls are interchangable so even though they are always getting lost we at least have some.

Invest in a beautiful set of fairy tales or your own favourite childhood books to read together.

Yearly pass to local attractions, always a great option, less "stuff" to clutter up the house and can use year round.

BertieBotts · 18/09/2022 10:37

Ooh yes defo to the tunnel as well, Ikea and Argos both do them.

BEE08 · 18/09/2022 11:36

some Ideas:

wooden blocks.
your favourite picture books from your childhood lot well known favourites.
duplo.
Melissa and Doug wooden toys are lovely - we have the wooden train which you put blocks on.
Small soft ball set - basket ball, football and rugby ball.
wooden animals - maybe a Noah’s ark
large cars or fire engine type toys - we have a wooden bus with people which has been well loved here.
Anything practical like a nice backpack, dinner set, bath toys.
We had a scuttle bug ride on which was loved a lot.

Prettypennies · 18/09/2022 12:49

Baby doll and pushchair
good quality soft toy
sensory toys
books!

cheeseandpeanutbutter · 18/09/2022 13:06

Things that they'll need in the next year, look at developmentally appropriate toys for each stage.
Something to roll on or under like a baby gym,
Something to hold - rattles, blocks,
Soft toys
Something to look at - mirror, books, car seat or pram attachments
Also nice things for room which for now will look pretty but in 6-9 months they can play with like wooden blocks, stacking toys and pull along toys.

fyn · 18/09/2022 13:41

We got our nearly one year old a tonie box which has been a wonderful investment. She could operate it herself to put on her nursery rhymes and songs. She’s nearly 3 now and still uses it daily to put on songs or listen to stories.

Fiddledeedeeee · 18/09/2022 13:53

My DS has a similar timed birthday and for his first Christmas we got:
skuttlebugs bike (didn’t really get used properly until the following spring but he liked to sit on it indoors)
baby Walker activity thing
merrythought bear (sentimental, to keep)

1st bday in jan was:
vilac metal sit on racing car (sentimental, to keep)
jumbo farm and safari animals
wooden peg dolls in various colours
books

He got quite a lot from family so we kept it simple ourselves

cheeseandpeanutbutter · 18/09/2022 14:00

Just realised you said she's going to be nearly 1!
Should've had my glasses on... please ignore.

Yousee · 18/09/2022 14:45

I wouldn't bother buying things so far ahead of when they will be useful, except if you get a fabulous out of season bargain or if you have loads of storage space to spare. What's the point in having it in the way for months after Christmas?
For my baby's first Christmas he's getting a personalised wooden Christmases box (not a Christmas Eve box, i prefer to give this 1st December), a personalised stocking to match his brother and sister, a special Christmas bauble, a gorgeous Grimm's rainbow rattle and some cloth/board books.

JenniferWooley · 18/09/2022 17:29

DS's birthday is exactly 2 weeks after Christmas so we thought about what the might need in the summer & planned for that.

He got a climbing frame/slide thing & a swing for the garden along with the usual books, pjs indoor toys.

He's 15 in January & in all honesty it doesn't get any easier trying to figure out what to get him due to his birthday being so close to Christmas - I'm still moving things between the lists the week before Christmas!

MassiveSalad22 · 18/09/2022 17:41

My 2 boys got a giant version of their jellycat comfort toy for their first birthday. May do the same for DD but at the mo she seems more of a blankie girl!

DC2 got some books and a big spikey ball.

DC1 we got him a teepee which was by used much or cared for and left to go mildewey. but my parents got him an outdoor swing which has lasted 7 years and just died.

MassiveSalad22 · 18/09/2022 17:42

*was not used much

Cuwins · 18/09/2022 17:52

DD will be 10m at Christmas.
I have brought her quite a bit but all 2nd hand or in sales and quite a few useful things.
Stocking: clothes, stacking cups, toy animals (some lovely wooden ones), bath book, cup, paint brushes, board book, toy car, bath toy, puppet, slinky, a VTech ball I was given free and cutlery. Will just add a few edibles to that.
Tree presents: a wooden trolley walker (free on Facebook!) with wooden blocks to go in it, push along tigger, clothes, galt pop up people, VTech microphone and a bath toy tidy. Will probably add 1 or 2 things.
Her first birthday is in Feb and currently have: lift out puzzles, clothes, hammer bench, shape sorter, a train with connecting carriages and little Peter rabbit character on it, wooden skittles, magnet animals, play food and a board book. Will add a few more things.
I would have brought more books but my sister loves childrens books so buys most of her books.

EcoCustard · 18/09/2022 17:54

We got all 4 Dc a Steiff bear for their 1st Christmas. Not the stiff ones the cuddly, soft ones. They all still have them and dc1 nearly 8 still cuddles his. They didn’t get much else, a few bits in a stocking which was more for the older DC’s. I would put in a sippy cup, sensory stuff (space blanket, Ball, musical maracas etc).

MassiveSalad22 · 18/09/2022 18:20

@Cuwins that all sounds lovely. But what will you do if you have subsequent kids, you will have everything! We are in this situation now haha 😄 you go for it though, I did, YOLO!

17caterpillars1mouse · 18/09/2022 18:24

A few years ago but

Dd1 had the baby Einstein music table for her first Christmas (obviously other music tables available) and a sand and water table for her first birthday

Dd2 got a janod dog themed wooden walker for her first Birthday, I actually can't remember what we got her for her first Christmas. Family members got her happyland which went down well.

I kind of regret not getting either a rocking horse

Other gifts they got at 1

First slide
First seesaw for outside
B toys rubber blocks
Trunki
Peg puzzles

17caterpillars1mouse · 18/09/2022 18:26

Oh and dd1 got a halilit xylophone for her first birthday. It some comes at regularly and she's now 6
