Adult stocking fillers, average cost £1

Our adult DCs were shocked when I suggested discontinuing stockings, it's something we've always done and they want to continue as it's part of Christmas as they know it..(They do receive other 'main' presents, this is just fun & tradition).

We've compromised on picking names out of a hat so we each do one stocking for another family member. We've agreed on a £10 - £12 total spend for 8-10 gifts each stocking. Free or 2nd hand stuff is acceptable. Aim should be for items the recipient would use/appreciate to minimise waste. Something funny always goes down well but not always easy to find within the budget.

I've absolutely no doubt that they will all come to me for ideas at some point! Plus I have my recipient's stocking to fill.

Please can you help with ideas for low cost, low tat stocking fillers. Average price should be about £1 - £1.50, getting something for free means you can spend more on another item.

When I was making them all, I'd sometimes pick up multi packs of eg sports socks or soaps and split between the relevant recipients. That can still be done by consultation with a couple of the other givers, so similar ideas welcome.

Examples of things I've put in stockings In the past:
free perfume samples that were given out when walking through Boots.
'As new' looking books when a local charity shop was having an 'everything £1' sale.
Brand new Debenhams boxed photo frame bought in same £1 scale

Jars of herbs & spices
Jars of Marmite/Nutella
Practical things like sellotape, string, glue
Sweets & chocolate
Pringles, nuts, pork scratchings
Herb seeds
Bulbs (the planting sort!)
'Everyday' shower gel / deo
Notebooks/pads
Emery boards
Car air fresheners
Candles
Herbal tea bags
And many more things but you get the idea!

Thank you!

I was once given a big bag of Skittles sweets. I was very pleased.

LionessesRules · 14/09/2022 12:29

You've pretty much written out my adult stocking shopping list!
Christmas decorations?
Christmas cracker if bought jointly to be shared one per stocking?

I'd love that too! Or jelly babies!

Aldi always do a pack of two hot chocolate stirrers around Christmas. The kind that are basically a chunk of chocolate on a stick to stir in to hot milk. They cost about a pound and I always put them in both my parents' and DC's stockings.

About 10 years I bought a mini screwdriver set from Poundland for my husband's stocking which still gets used every week. Other gifts I've bought for adults are little boxes of liqueur chocolates, mini champagne, measuring spoons, socks, key rings, hot chocolate and hot chocolate shaker, satsumas, pack of cards to name a few.

I usually put a bauble in my teens' stockings for their little bedroom trees.

Me and my db always do each other a stocking it's the highlight of my Christmas ( we are 54 and 44 years old!😂)
All items have to be either absolute shit (think Poundland toys that break on first use)
Absolutely religious but incredibly tacky (once got him a Jesus money box)
Or contain the word cunt. The cunt rock I got him from Brighton was a particular hit one year.
We open them on Christmas afternoon when we are nicely merry and have THE best laugh x

mondaytosunday · 14/09/2022 12:52

Omg this is so prescriptive surely it saps the joy out of it? My kids haven't had stockings for years (now late teens).
We moved last year and have a mantle for the first time and I got four lovely cross stitched stockings... for the pets. A few treats and toys for them.
I'd tell your kids to, um, grow up. But failing that seems you have plenty of ideas to choose from.

I just bought a trolley token key ring for £1 in tesco, great stocking gift for adults!

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 14/09/2022 13:01

Where in Tesco did you find the trolley key @bestbefore ? I could do with one myself but also a great stocking filler idea, thanks

Nearer the time Aldi and Lidl do packs of little jars of pâté which don't need to be refrigerated. My BIL always gets these and oatcakes in his stocking from me.
Chocolate coins
Sachets of toiletries for overnight stays. Perfume or aftershave testers
Socks
A packet of paper strips to make a chain from ( family tradition)
A family photo printed out into a key ring or tiny frame.
Miniature marmalade ( my DM) or other preserve ( my DF).

bestbefore · 14/09/2022 13:24

@RockingMyFiftiesNot it's was in the "keep it handy" bit - loads of useful items all £1 - in the hardware section of a Tesco extra..I know what you mean, I've been looking for ages for myself too

Twilightstarbright · 14/09/2022 13:30

Some great ideas.

A pack of tissues, I just picked up a pack of rainbow wrapped picket tissues in Aldi. But more fun than Kleenex.

SomethingFast · 14/09/2022 13:35

Key ring torch, packet of seed, lip balm, travel size toiletries, pens, glasses cleaning cloth

Isonthecase · 14/09/2022 14:20

Just make sure you agree to share if any of the scratch cards win!
How about a nice mug to go with the hot choc sticks? They do some fairly cheap ones in places like b+m, could get an initial one?

NoDairyNoProblem · 14/09/2022 14:28

Home bargains do folding shopping bags to pop in your handbag for under £2.

Stationary.
Nail file/clippers.
Sleep mask - primark have ones with gel pads down to 50p!

I dont like cheese but everyone I know loves it, you can get little indervidual wax covered cheese in supermarkers around xmas time.

Beer is a good option for drinkers and often cheap in B&M, things like Trooper beer or Hobgoblin have been popular in the past here.

Poundland is always good for poundstuff obviously, they usually have stocking filling selections at xmas. Over the last few years I have seen whiskey rocks, wallet ninja tools and all sorts. They had hanky, socks, wallet and belt sets on sale the other day looked like left over stock from fathers day maybe but didnt say fathers day on it and completely usable.
