Adult stocking fillers, average cost £1

Our adult DCs were shocked when I suggested discontinuing stockings, it's something we've always done and they want to continue as it's part of Christmas as they know it..(They do receive other 'main' presents, this is just fun & tradition).

We've compromised on picking names out of a hat so we each do one stocking for another family member. We've agreed on a £10 - £12 total spend for 8-10 gifts each stocking. Free or 2nd hand stuff is acceptable. Aim should be for items the recipient would use/appreciate to minimise waste. Something funny always goes down well but not always easy to find within the budget.

I've absolutely no doubt that they will all come to me for ideas at some point! Plus I have my recipient's stocking to fill.

Please can you help with ideas for low cost, low tat stocking fillers. Average price should be about £1 - £1.50, getting something for free means you can spend more on another item.

When I was making them all, I'd sometimes pick up multi packs of eg sports socks or soaps and split between the relevant recipients. That can still be done by consultation with a couple of the other givers, so similar ideas welcome.

Examples of things I've put in stockings In the past:
free perfume samples that were given out when walking through Boots.
'As new' looking books when a local charity shop was having an 'everything £1' sale.
Brand new Debenhams boxed photo frame bought in same £1 scale

Jars of herbs & spices
Jars of Marmite/Nutella
Practical things like sellotape, string, glue
Sweets & chocolate
Pringles, nuts, pork scratchings
Herb seeds
Bulbs (the planting sort!)
'Everyday' shower gel / deo
Notebooks/pads
Emery boards
Car air fresheners
Candles
Herbal tea bags
And many more things but you get the idea!

Thank you!

A bottle of bucks fizz (perhaps a bit big or budget busting at around £3)

A favourite drink or sweets e.g. Dairymilk bar or a dib dab/wham etc.

Me and my db always do each other a stocking it's the highlight of my Christmas ( we are 54 and 44 years old!😂)
All items have to be either absolute shit (think Poundland toys that break on first use)
Absolutely religious but incredibly tacky (once got him a Jesus money box)
Or contain the word cunt. The cunt rock I got him from Brighton was a particular hit one year.
We open them on Christmas afternoon when we are nicely merry and have THE best laugh x

I love this!

cbatopainttheshed · 14/09/2022 18:00

My MIL put a mini colander in mine a couple of years ago, we laughed at how random it was... but I love it! I use it loads, perfect for washing grapes and strawberries!

Needmorelego · 15/09/2022 17:45

Things for £1....
Books (secondhand)
Books (those £1 quick read novels)
Tree ornament from places like Poundland (although some were £1.50 last year....the horror)
Sweets/chocolate
Bubble bath/shower gel - silly ones like the Imperial Leather "sparkly mermaid" smell or something.
3 cans of Barr's fizzy drinks in different flavours
Christmas flavour crisps
Socks
That's all I can think of right now...

Needmorelego · 15/09/2022 17:47

Loving these Xmas Grin any ideas for a 23 yo moi and dp? Thanks x

Famousthehero · 17/09/2022 05:53

I love Home Bargains for stocking fillers, things I might get for an adult from there

  • the 4 for £1 pop at home popcorn
  • sauces- eg the yoghurt & mint or burger sauce ‘takeaway’ style ones
  • tape measure
  • sheet mask
  • chocolate coins
  • harmonica
  • tumble drier balls although I think they’re £2.99
  • glasses repair kit
  • scented candle
  • reindeer hot choc bomb or snowman marshmallow topper
  • lip balm

but just a walk round any HB with open eyes would bring so many ideas, or could even do specific like spa themed/handy tools/craft/gardening/foodie one (ours had the monin syrups in the other day)

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 17/09/2022 09:23

Delighted with all the suggestions, thank you !
@Deckthewallswithpaintandplaydough (brilliant username!) I usually try to make it a mix: everyday things that people always need but tend not ti buy for themselves (eg a big ball of elastic bands for DH as we couldn't ever find one when we needed one); consumables are my go to fillers if I can't find anything different - cans of mixed drinks or bottles of beer of course always well received along with savoury snacks, sweets, chocolates.
Sometimes there's an in-joke within a couple / family that would raise a laugh. Ill share some examples that you might not find amusing but we did - might generate some ideas for your family:
A couple or years on the trot we forgot to save a Euro coin for the trolley for our first self-catering shop, so I made sure I kept one and wrapped it up for DH's stocking. Made him laugh and we also started reminiscing about the holiday, an added bonus.
One time he kept moaning that we never had enough clothes pegs (never thinking to buy any himself of course) so I put some in his stocking with a label 'this was going to be a bottle of beer but think you need these more'
DS in the run up to one Christmas staggered down stairs every weekend morning asking for paracetamol, so got his own pack in his stocking. . I made a label on the computer something like DS's paracetamol & a cartoon of a hungover person stuck onto the box.
As PPs have said, have a walk around B&M bargains/Home Bargains or if you still have one a £1 shop. (And if you find anything, please remember to post on here!)
Also start looking out for reduced stuff - I just got some much nicer than usual post it notes from the range for 55p - which means I can buy something else a bit more expensive. when the kids were little I found reduced egg cups with funny faces so also bought cress seeds to grow as 'hair'. Still being used as egg cups a couple of decades on.

Hope that helps @Deckthewallswithpaintandplaydough if not tell is a bit more about yourselves and I'm sure you'll get lots of help.

Rex London Sale has lots under £2

Autumnleaves4 · 17/09/2022 09:52

Hi all, this is a great thread. I have 4 ‘boys’ to buy stockings for age 16-23. I’ve always bought some small Lego packets/nano blocks//metal puzzles as they got older plus other items up to £5 then chocolate fillers. Their stockings would come to at least £30 each which I just can’t afford to do anymore. I suggested last year that we stop but my youngest was still keen, it seems unfair to stop his now at 16 when the others had them longer and I can’t only do him one so I need to do them all. Also it has been my favourite time of day having them all in my bedroom watching them open them while I drink a cup of tea, the calm before the storm so would love ideas to make cheaper and fun too.

Thank you!!!! Great ideas x any for dd4?

It's a lot of years since I did a 4 year olds stocking, here are a few ideas but am sure you'll get lots of help from others on here:
Hair bobbles
Hair clips
Character toothbrush/bubble bath/facecloth
Stickers
A book (The Works is great for cheaper books)
Bubbles
Craft stuff
Start the tradition of a satsuma & chocolate coins (history) in the bottom of the - traditional and cheap!
Colouring book
Bouncing ball

Our DCs always opened their stockings on our bed while we came round with a cuppa. So I always put a carton of juice and a cereal bar in their stocking to have there and then. Also would put in a little bar of chocolate - a Freddo or a fudge - which they were allowed to have - unheard of any other day of the year, in fact on of my DC mentioned it when we were discussing stockings and they are in their 20s now!
