No Christmas lights

A friend told me today she's read that some councils won't be putting up Christmas lights this year due to the cost of energy. Completely understand but will be a bit sad to not have the lovely twinkly lights.

Made me wonder how many homes will do the same.

I was wondering that the other day.

I LOVE Christmas Lights, big & small, but I expect there will be far fewer this year.

I'll be putting my internal ones up/on. It makes a HUGE difference to my mood.

I won’t be putting out all my decorations this year inside or out, but I plan on getting some new solar for a couple of trees I decorate outside.

BooksAndHooks · 03/09/2022 23:16

I have been wondering about this, we have a local street famous for their lights. They raise a lot of money for charity every year. It will be a shame if they can’t do it this year.

Thankfully our outdoor lights are all solar or battery operated so as long as they still work we can still use them.

We will still have our indoor tree lights on but will change the timer so they go off a bit earlier.

I was thinking about this… I want to get some solar Christmas lights to put on my hedge and trees at the front of the house. I'm not sure solar lights work too well in the winter or when it's very cloudy but perhaps I'm wrong?

Haudyourwheesht · 03/09/2022 23:27

That's sad. I didn't think LED lights used that much.

Thanks Tories.

Dougieowner · 03/09/2022 23:31

We don't do much in the way of external lights but they will all be on as usual.

Janesdufflecoat · 03/09/2022 23:52

FFS This has made me really cross! As if December isn't miserable enough!

Tulipvase · 03/09/2022 23:57

I understand why towns might not but I’ll still be putting mine up. The newer style LED lights are pretty cheap to run (I think/hope).

PinkButtercups · 03/09/2022 23:58

I'm putting all mine up in and out.

It's one time of year it feels the most magical. Depending on your lights they don't cost an arm and a leg to run (unless you have them on all day).

WildFlowerBees · 04/09/2022 06:09

I don't usually put lights outside but my lights inside will go up as usual. I hope winter won't be too gloomy this year.

Mine work fine, even when it’s a dull day and raining.

plixy · 04/09/2022 06:41

I use battery operated lights on my trees outside. They come on with a timer for 8 hours a day. One set of 3xAA batteries lasts the whole of December, so very cheap to run and they are very bright. I will be using them again this year.

I look forward to there being no Christmas lights. A complete and utter waste of public
Money. I think that local authorities should set an example by not erecting lights this year and should be doing their utmost to save electricity.

I hate winter and Christmas, but the lights are the only thing that make the season bearable.

And the money saved should be rolled over into social care services which will be stretched more this year.

FT123456 · 04/09/2022 07:30

Will be having my decorations up but I was thinking this exact same thing

Iceballoons · 04/09/2022 08:22

Led lights are low energy so I don’t think this will be a problem.

mam0918 · 04/09/2022 18:09

We never put ones outside, we have ones on our tree that we put on maybe an hour a day normally and then xmas day - guess its play it by ear this year.

Our other bits of light up decor are battery powered (led orniments etc...).

LadyCatStark · 04/09/2022 18:13

I was wondering about this as Blackpool illuminations we’re switched on on Friday. They must cost the council a fortune. Mind you, I guess they need the revenue that they bring in now more than ever.

NiqueNique · 04/09/2022 18:21

We’ll be putting up our outdoor lights as usual - it’s just the one string of LEDs along our fence. If I see some reasonably priced outdoor lit decorations for the two plant pots I’ll get those as well. Hopefully solar powered. I buy one Christmas item (or set) per year and that will be it for this year.

I expect that our street will be decorated as usual - no one goes overboard so I think people will likely be able to stretch to it.

As for indoor lights, we don’t have many - lights on the tree, a candelabra in the window, and one small string of lights for the dining room. The lights are low energy and the candelabra will act as mood lighting in place of a lamp, so we’ll use them as usual. I mainly use candles for Christmas hygge.

TeeBee · 04/09/2022 18:27

There are some people who literally cannot feed their kids. Although it's sad not to have lights up, for this year, id sooner them prioritise feeding kids and supporting the vulnerable. If you want lights, you can use your own electricity. Sad but for one year, I think it's appropriate and perfectly reasonable.

NiqueNique · 04/09/2022 18:30

Yes I do think that it’s prudent for public funding to go where it’s most needed during times of crisis. I’m certainly not bothered if our town doesn’t put on a display this year.

AlwaysLatte · 04/09/2022 18:58

One unexpected benefit of this miserable energy crisis is that people will start to see understatement as a good thing. We have one little string of lights in a holly tree and a small silhouette reindeer head but some of these displays are ridiculous.

It's one thing to agree, or support the decision, but to 'look forward to it'?!

Make sure Father Christmas doesn't hear you being so grumpy! 🎅🌲
