Last year I brought my girls 2 and 5 at time most of their presents from charity shops and fb market place. I was wondering if anyone else does this and what good finds they have found?

My DD first Christmas this year- she will be 10m and her main Xmas present is one of those wooden push along trolleys I got free on Facebook! Was planning for grandad to give it a lick of paint but actually it's in great condition. I have then brought her some blocks in the sale to go in it. Then in her stocking she has got stacking cups, toys animals and a toy car I brought 2nd hand along side a bath book and vtech ball I was given free.
The rest of her presents were all brought in the sales

Flubadubba · 22/08/2022 19:28

We got given a dolls house by a neighbour past year- my 2 year old loved it!

Georgeskitchen · 22/08/2022 19:39

Babies and toddlers Don need expensive toys. I find it staggering the amount of stuff some parents buy. Huge mountains of wrapped gifts for a one year old baby and all posted in FaceyB . They are mostly more interested in playing with the boxes!!

RealHousewifeOfEastLondon · 22/08/2022 19:40

I love buying second hand toys for my kids. I've just bought my son a Paw Patrol lookout tower for Xmas - £15 in my local charity shop! It's not only getting bargains and saving money, but consumerism is nuts, especially when kids only play with stuff for such a short time!

Snowdropsarelovely · 22/08/2022 19:42

Got mine a huge amount of Happyland second hand one year. It took up the whole lounge, cost about £25 and was a big hit! Wish teenagers were that cheap to buy for ...

ihatebojo · 22/08/2022 19:43

When they were little I did as much as possible second hand. As teenagers it's tricky but we love charity shops. Bikes are second hand too

Choconut · 22/08/2022 20:34

Yes lots of secondhand things every year, still as a teen I get a game, puzzle and books from a charity shop and whatever I can from ebay.

Creepymanonagoatfarm · 22/08/2022 20:38

Ds has had loads of second hand stuff.

How would anyone know?

Jericha · 22/08/2022 20:39

Last year I got movable woody and bullseye dolls from toy story for about £7. I also got 3 x huge minion cuddly toys for a fiver. Minions puzzle for £1 in the charity shop plus a couple of other bits for a couple of pounds (as you may have guessed, we were very much in a toy story and minion phase!). Because he's so intense but also fickle about the latest things he likes I usually tend to get this stuff second hand. He goes mad for it but character stuff is what he gets bored of quickest.

CountessOfSponheim · 22/08/2022 20:44

I buy second hand if I can even now they are older - recently have bought roller skates and a RipStik that way. It makes the present budget go further and I feel less guilty about environmental impact.

AllFadestoBlack · 22/08/2022 22:13

I got my daughter a rocking horse for £10 for her second Christmas. She still loves it 3 years later, bargain present and it was in amazing condition. I've picked up a few second hand gifts this year, some unused and still in wrapping.

Devo1818 · 23/08/2022 19:19

Yes definitely. I spotted 2 Our Generation dolls in the charity shop yesterday with extra clothes for £8.50 - need to go back tomorrow and hope they are still there! Perfect for my 6 yo

Devo1818 · 23/08/2022 19:20

Also eyeing up some 2nd hand heelies for her from Vinted

GettingStuffed · 28/08/2022 20:07

It's great for books, last year I also managed to buy my daughter-in-law a high end high street leather handbag.

CakeCrumbs44 · 29/08/2022 22:39

Definitely, especially when they're small and don't have a clue. I've got orchard toy games and books practically brand new from market place.

For my DDs 2nd birthday I got her a bundle of 4 Peppa Pig cuddly toys for £5 rather than £7 each in great condition. Also one of those overpriced Melissa and Doug "doorbell house" things for a fiver.

CakeCrumbs44 · 29/08/2022 22:41

Sometimes I bring home a little thing I've found in the charity shop and give it to my kids just because, my daughter gets very excited that I've found a bargain in the "second hand shop".

Beachbabe1 · 29/08/2022 22:46

Pre-loved lego sets from ebay for my sons birthday. Some people take really good care of the sets, make sure all the bits are there and even have the box! I can but him alot more at the ebay prices!

Beachbabe1 · 29/08/2022 22:47

Can also get some brilliant books in charity shops, Roald Dahl, David Williams for a fraction of the cost of new!

I do this all the time! Which I know I shouldn't do as many times maybe once a week, I just love a bargin! Only ever spend around 50p-£1 I don't want her expecting anything which she doesn't, she just says mummy got me a present all cutely! Which I know as a kid I would have loved that! I also think I do it more as my oldest is non verbal and I never got her anything as she doesn't really play with toys so as I'm experiencing my youngest being verbal it's like novelty !

Totally fine! I also think it's a good idea to give as gifts stuff that you'd buy anyway - clothes/shoes/drinks bottle etc. So you're wrapping stuff up for them (good for photos and for if any other kids need to see that santa came for the baby too) but not wasting your money. I love Vinted and FB marketplace. Our local charity shops are a bit hit and miss - and nothing i've got from there has been a bit hit for DD but useful for padding out a stocking for a couple of quid.

Mumoftoomanygirls · 30/08/2022 12:10

My DDs know my love of 2nd hand shopping, they regularly come with me and ask to look at charity shops. Over the years I’ve got some great things especially for birthdays and Christmas. Last years biggest hits were last min charity shop purchases for a £1 each. I’ve also managed a lot of main presents over the years. I would definitely encourage people with younger children to do this as there comes a time it gets very hard especially when specific things get chosen. We are in for an expensive couple of years, which started last year with the first switch purchase, laptops and phones are on the list this year for our oldest, even 2nd hand they will be expensive.

BritInAus · 30/08/2022 12:22

For Xmas when my daughter was 3 I got 5 Duplo sets from Marketplace. All in excellent condition with very few missing pieces, if any. All had the boxes or instructions or both. I downloaded and laminated any missing instructions. She was very happy - I got lots of discontinued sets that she loved - Ariel, Sofia the First, Cinderella, Snow White and a big mixed box. She's 7 and she and visiting friends will still make huge castles etc now.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 30/08/2022 12:26

Bought DS a bike that had barely been used for £60!

Second hand always has the advantage of not having to assemble too!

RosieRoww · 30/08/2022 12:35

Yes, bought a rocking horse for my dd when little.

SparkyBlue · 30/08/2022 12:43

Last year I got a Peppa pig house on Facebook marketplace. Another year I got the Thomas the tank engine big track thingy (can't remember the name) . I pick up bargains if I see them. The children are none the wiser. We aren't strapped for cash either. I hate spending a fortune on plastic tat that I know the children will grow out of soon enough.
