Last year I brought my girls 2 and 5 at time most of their presents from charity shops and fb market place. I was wondering if anyone else does this and what good finds they have found?

We got DD a Barbie house for £10 which was £150 in the shop.
We always buy bikes second hand as well.
I've bought figures before from eBay when the kids have got into older Disney films etc although sometimes there's a bit of competition for those!

The biggest scores were things like a refrigerator for the play kitchen or a crib for her baby doll. The big items that look really showy on Christmas morning and cost a fortune new. I miss those days. It was fun hitting the re-sales and finding things she would love.

I bought jewellery from a certain brand in a charity shop for my Nan, they were still tagged and sealed in the boxes and she loved them. I've tracked down obscure wrestling figures from the 80s in charity shops too for my son for Christmas as you can't buy them new anymore. I ask my husband and family to buy me gifts used/second hand if possible because I don't like to think of all the landfill. Nothing wrong with it, happy shopping!

Also got a huge Barbie doll house for my dd from Facebook for £50, with huge box of accessories, pony, Barbie car and five barbie dolls.

We've bought a fabulous wooden dolls house, furniture and wooden dolls for gd for £25.
Last for years

eBay has saved me twice when my son has asked Santa for Playmobil sets no longer in production, or the year he asked for a build a Bear Rubble from Paw Patrol. I have bought lots of second hand toys for him. Especially plastic stuff, I hate waste.

Titsflyingsouth · 30/08/2022 16:10

Younger kids (e.g. 4 and under) are often completely oblivious as to where the toys comes from. It's all from Santa. So why not pick up toys 2nd hand if they are in good nick? Just wrap up with fancy paper.

Wetblanket78 · 26/12/2022 00:01

As long as the toys are in good clean and safe condition there's nothing wrong with it at all. My children seemed to play more with the second hand toys I got them. The favourite was a Tonka rescue truck with a search light on.

When my children were younger. Sure start did a campaign that children learn more from every day objects. Like a wooden spoon, cups and pans etc. They did treasure basket's at toddler groups I took my son to.

Our kids mostly get second-hand - and they know it's second-hand, too, but see it as a positive thing for the environment.

This year for 6 a solid wooden castle with a dozen action figures for sixty quid. He loves it.

Both my DGD's Christmas presents from me were from Facebook marketplace but looked like new. Playmobil and Sylvanians for a fifth of the price? Yes please! A win for both me and her.

JennyWI · 26/12/2022 00:21

Been there done that! Adult who still delights in getting used books (cause you can get 5-6 books for the price of 2) and used do dads ( usually knick knacks that my friend knows i can make beautiful)

purpleme12 · 26/12/2022 00:23

Baby carrier for baby doll in charity shop for £2
And red proper Barbie car for £2.50 in charity shop!
So pleased!!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/12/2022 00:58

Dd gets loads 2nd hand, charity shop or FB marketplace. Best ever was probably a big Barbie house, v good condition, with umpteen Barbies, masses of kit inc.horses, all for £100. Gdd -then 4 IIRC - was ecstatic.

Lots of other stuff, inc. Sylvanian families and Lego. And bikes.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 26/12/2022 01:01

My DP and I bought each other charity shop presents this year or 'found' each other some freebies on FB. And I actually bought him some socks and he actually bought me some coal (which I had asked for). All happy!

Just a nice day together after visiting parents.

ellesbellesxxx · 26/12/2022 06:29

My daughter (5) asked for a barbie dream house: £30 from fb marketplace!
3 years ago I managed to sort all their presents from the nct nearly sale, we were pretty sure my husband was going to be made redundant (he was in the January) so we were being very frugal.

Greydogs123 · 26/12/2022 07:33

Got my dd(10) her Lego set on Facebook this year. Also, bought a bunch of books in a series she likes from charity shops and some clothes off vinted. She had some new stuff as well, but her main presents were second hand. I can buy more of the things she really wants if I get it secondhand, plus I like it from an environmental point of view.

MaryKristmas · 26/12/2022 07:38

Bought two huge tubs of Duplo from Facebook marketplace this year. Perfect condition and cost £15 in total! Got way more for the money and so pleased with it ☺️
