And before anyone has a pop at me - I've posted in the Christmas section!

So, anyone started yet? I go all out at Christmas and my kids will be 24 and 16. They have rather expensive tastes and I like to treat them so I start quite early!

Anyone else admit they've started?

I've only gone in very gently ... one stocking filler for my eldest, it's a high end make up palette that I got for a steal!

Brought my first Xmas gift today - a discounted Minnie mouse umbrella for DD so I have now officially started

easyday · 23/06/2022 23:14

Bought my first decoration today, very late for me (I have a storage unit mostly filled with boxes of decorations).

We have never done xmas lists with our kids.
Our kids also never really ask for things.

Even as a kid myself when we where told to circle things in the Argos catalogue we knew it was just for fun, we never got the stuff we circled we always got WAY better stuff that we hadnt even seen before.

Also kids dont change that rapidly:

My 1 year old has no idea whats going on, she'll play with anything.

My 4 year old has liked the same things since he was 1 (paw patrol, anything pirates or monsters, fireman sam, minions, angry birds etc... hes just added a like for Marvel but he still loves the other stuff too it doesnt irradicate the rest its just another option).

My 13 year old has liked the same things since he was 8 (football and minecraft is basically the only two things hes into).

I dont understand the argument that you wont know your kids in 6 months time, nobody changes likes that fickle-y. Yes kids go through phases where this week Minions is the best thing ever and next week Paw Patrol but by a months time it'll be Minions turn again.

I could only imagine how unvaried their gifts would be and bored they would be in a week if I waited until the week of so before xmas and only got what they are into right at that snapshot of moment.

Totally agree.

My 5 year old loves anything Barbie, Princess, unicorn, polly pocket related and that’s not going to change anytime soon. She may see other things, she’s been asking for Syvalian family every-time she goes to the toy shop for about 6 months now so I know she must really like at as she keeps going back to it. We wouldn’t buy it if she suddenly added it to her list, but if she keeps going back to the same thing we know she really likes it.

My 8 & 10 yos haven’t changed much other than not asking for LOLs in the last 2 years. As my DDs I know them and what they like, I know my 8yo in particular is a budding sci-fi expert, I very much doubt her love for Star Wars is going to wane given both myself and DH are almost 50 and still fans. I know they both love art, ones sporty, they both love video games, gemstones and Harry Potter. I know their tastes in clothes. These things don’t just change overnight.

We have a rule of only 2 things on the Santa list anyway, that way if I do get any curve balls I don’t have much to look for. But given they have already done their lists I have absolutely no surprises. They did them early last year and never changed their minds.

CamdenLurker · 24/06/2022 12:14

In the past I've asked my 4 dc to write a list of five things and each one must'nt cost more than £50, generally there is one expensive item on the list and the rest are between £10 and £20, (youngest dd seemed to think that she could add and remove from the list, so I had to make sure that they knew that as soon as something was on that list it couldn't be changed), then I'd make sure they had a few surprises as well, this has always worked well and everyone was happy on Christmas Day.

I usually start in June, and although this year I'm really not buying loads, I've already told my dc - all teens and older, that it will be 5 gifts and a stocking, and I'm determined to stick to it.

So far I've picked up both dd's a pair of UGG slippers in the sales and a Victoria Secret body spray each reduced from £14 to £4, which will be a stocking filler.

I've also just made my first purchase from the Christmas bargains prequel thread.

I don't have anything for either ds yet as they are harder to buy for and both have full time jobs.

CamdenLurker · 24/06/2022 12:15

I should that I also save a set amount every month from Dec to pay for things I see in the sales or just on the off chance.

Tunus · 24/06/2022 12:25

I haven’t started yet but already know what I’m getting 3/4 children. I usually start buying stocking fillers from September as I see things then do the gifts for people other than my children closer to Christmas

umpkj · 24/06/2022 12:48

I bought Lego set for dh. I don't know what to get for dc. Dd10 is growing out of Lego so I haven't bought any bargain Lego I have seen. Ds12 is difficult. We are getting Nintendo switch for summer holidays so maybe a game for that for Xmas.

I think last year I had much more stuff bought by now. I am waiting for prime day to get stuff for myself.

Amid · 24/06/2022 13:01

All done. Bought DC an iPhone 13 last week. That birthday and Christmas sorted. Everyone else will get money.

HardRockOwl · 24/06/2022 13:53

@Amid im deliberating the iPhone 13 for my son but how much did you pay if I may ask?

I've bought my Christmas flights back to the UK as there are limited dates and availability. I'm strangely excited!

Erictheavocado · 24/06/2022 16:28

Yes, I have a few bits and pieces which I picked up when we were away for a few days last month. Mostly stocking fillers for adult dcs and their partners - items I would not see locally or online unless I was specifically searching for them. I'm always on the lookout for suitable gifts and try to buy them when I see them.

Amid · 24/06/2022 16:58

@HardRockOwl bought it directly from Apple. Think it's was.around £900. It worked out cheaper to do sim only and buy it outright. Also they do interest free payments.

GettingEnoughMoonshine · 24/06/2022 17:11

Has your eldest already confirmed they'll be spending Christmas with you? It is nice to have them confirm they'll be visiting so early. 😀

I have a couple of stocking fillers I picked up in the boxing day/ new year sales.
I'll be properly starting next month.

HardRockOwl · 24/06/2022 17:12

@GettingEnoughMoonshine oh she will come for Christmas every year until the day I finally keel over, of that there is no doubt Grin

Fairislefandango · 24/06/2022 17:18

Nope, not until November!

Scanner20 · 24/06/2022 19:38

Just a few Lego sets as they've been on offer and dd not overly fussed what Lego friends sets she actually gets so pretty easy to get one on deal.
Couple of gifts for dc I'm family. I buy when I see something but as my dc are 4 & 6 they will have more of an idea once the symths books hits the door mat!

ColourfulOnesie · 24/06/2022 19:58

Yes
I got my nieces pjs on Boxing Day last year
Then I picked up 2 soft Barbie doll things in Aldi a few weeks ago for the youngest DD
Thats it so far but I’ve started making lists and really thinking about it now

Ihatemyroad · 25/06/2022 08:17

I’ve started! 😊. I keep an eye on Claire’s for when they have 50% off and buy the hair clips, headbands, notebooks and bags.

Also bought a few Orchard Toys games from John Lewis and Boots.

hattie43 · 25/06/2022 08:22

I've started , I've bought some NEOM gift sets and Joules Wellies and PJ's .

I love everything Christmas Grin

namechangeanonymous · 25/06/2022 08:38

My little girl will be five months come Christmas, she isn't born yet so I haven't started though I have started saving we won't be going mad this year as I think she will be more interested in looking at the lights. Were planning on doing the four gift thing

Haven't started on anybody else either - this year I'm going to work to a tight budget per person and am planning on a day out to myself early December to do it all :-)

Cuwins · 25/06/2022 08:58

Our DD will be 9m- I have 1 thing that I saw in the sale that will be either for Xmas or her first birthday. It's a wooden peg and hammer thing.
Other than that no but I do want to start an Amazon list for her soon as I can see 1 set of grandparents going mad and buying loads of rubbish otherwise!

Lysianthus · 25/06/2022 10:00

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 19/06/2022 20:40

Yes, saving money in an account throughout the year, I bought FIL a jumper in the next winter sale.

I’ve also just bought some bargainous bits from Rex of London for teacher presents. I needed for end of school year so ordered the Christmas stuff at the same time.

Thank you sooo much for this recommendation! Just bought 18 items for £25; stocking fillers and actual bargain presents too!

Erictheavocado · 25/06/2022 12:04

Can I suggest wooden toys to you. The toys and games are mainly wooden and good quality. They have decent sales throughout the year and I have bought loads of bits from them for my dgs and I don't think I've ever paid full price. I've never been disappointed with any of my purchases. Hope some of you find something in their current summer sale.

Mrsfussypants1 · 25/06/2022 13:30

@Erictheavocado Thank you! It's Jaques of London and they're stuff is always amazing, well presented and lasts. I bought the dinosaur/car thing was £25 down to £8 99 for my best friends little boys birthday in a few months, fab set I've gifted to others before. A couple of other bits popped in my basket too, I love their games.

Mrsfussypants1 · 25/06/2022 13:31
