What gifts went down well with 12/13 year old girls?

It's DD's birthday this week and we still haven't got her any presents! So difficult immediately after Christmas. I know kids are all into quite different things at this age but would anyone like to share what their DDs (or DSs) received that they really liked this year?

Things that DD received and liked were mainly stationery, small storage (to keep stationery in!), a BSL book and art stuff.

She's not into make up or toiletry type things and doesn't do any sports. She's being assessed for ASD and gets anxious in crowds so things like theatre tickets or experiences probably won't work.

Any ideas!

An Oodie and a ‘jogging suit’ from Zara.

Adamsants · 08/01/2022 08:39

Lol..I was going to say oodie..my dd 12 lives in her (fake) oodie

Lalallama · 08/01/2022 08:40

What's a jogging suit?? (probably showing my age!). An Oodie is a fab idea but she already has one (last year's birthday present!)

Matching top and bottoms in sweatshirt material. Block colours are in fashion, so no pattern.

GoodnightGrandma · 08/01/2022 08:44

I think the kids call them co-ords now, I know them as a jogging suit !!!

If she’s into art, are there any crafts she would like to try like knitting or crochet?

Also, what would your budget be? A Nintendo switch lite might be something she would enjoy.

A weighted blanket? These can help with anxiety and sleep issues. They recommend you buy one that isn’t heavier than 10% of the person’s body weight.

samsalmon · 08/01/2022 08:48

A virtual escape room (cost about £11) then you can have another gift as the ‘prize’.

AnneLovesGilbert · 08/01/2022 08:50

A salt lamp. Bluetooth speaker. Gift card. Phone camera lens adapter thing - makes it go fish eye and something else.

Saisong · 08/01/2022 08:51

Fairy lights (plugged ones so don't need to keep changing batteries)
Posca pens - she's now ordering more with her Xmas money, will decorate anything that moves.
Cluedo - they have played it endlessly!

Talipesmum · 08/01/2022 08:54

We got a 12 yr old girl a pin art thing - one of those boards where you push your hand on to it and the pins take the impression of your hand. She loves it. Got a proper metal one not the plastic ones.

Lalallama · 08/01/2022 08:56

@GoodnightGrandma that makes sense now! I was picturing an 80's shell suit type thing for some reason. Grin

@Winterlove I actually got a weighed blanket myself for Christmas and I love it. The rest of the family have tried it and all hate it unfortunately! Budget is up to about £100, I'm not sure about a Nintendo switch, but that did make me think of other tech, and Bluetooth headphones or a speaker for her room might be an idea.

@samsalmon virtual escape room is a good idea, she loves games and puzzles so I think she'd like that.

Just off to google salt lamps and posca pens (I'm learning loads today!). You're all fab with ideas, I'm glad I asked on here.

If you can get AirPods they are great. I got a pair for my birthday last year and I love them. I’d been using cheaper Bluetooth earphones and they definitely weren’t as good.

Hope you find something she loves!

GoodnightGrandma · 08/01/2022 09:00

The ‘jogging suit’ I got from Zara must be popular as I’ve seen two other people in it !

Lalallama · 08/01/2022 09:01

Ah just realised she actually has some acrylic pens similar to posca pens, could possibly get some more though as she uses those a lot (she likes painting pebbles).

Bubble tea kit (Amazon). Bird feeder kit that you stick on the outside of her bedroom window. Faux fur throw From Habitat, reduced at Argos. Chocolate bombs.

SorryPardonWhat · 08/01/2022 09:02

Tombow pens
Tombow storage box
AirPods
Fluffy cushion and hot water bottle and throw
Oodie
Light with phone charger built in

scaredsadandstuck · 08/01/2022 09:03

Yep my niece is 13 and very into crafty stuff - I got her a punch needle kit.

How about stuff for her room if she's getting into the phase where she wants to make it her own kingdom? New duvet set, scatter cushions, beanbag etc. My son was very pleased with some display shelves that are everywhere now - you can get them in Primark - for displaying all his tat treasures!

Obviously not everyone agrees with this, but we got my son a cheap 2nd hand TV for his room for a birthday or Christmas when he was 12ish.

KurtWilde · 08/01/2022 09:04

DD11 loved all her art and stationary presents. I got her some 'learn to draw manga, learn to draw kawaii' type things, so colours and instructional books with drawing paper.

She also loved her oodie, mini fridge for her room (controversial present on MN but so far all it's had in it is bottles off water and her Christmas chocolate), and because she loves to make videos I got a mini tripod stand for her phone with a positional light attached. That's had a lot of use!

scaredsadandstuck · 08/01/2022 09:04

Oh sorry - crossed over with a few posts saying similar stuff there!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 08/01/2022 09:05

Apparently the selection of flavoured coffees I bought DN were amazing... MIL has asked if I can find more.

My DD is slightly younger but we got her a pyrography set as a more 'grown up' craft item and she's enjoyed it, but may be a little on the young side for.

SpookyScarySkeletons · 08/01/2022 09:05

Oodie. I got one each for my 12yo and 17yo. They were very shocked that I knew what one was (thanks Mumsnet!!) and haven't taken them
Off since Christmas Day.

Pandora ring cos all the girls at school wear one.

Straightening brush (she has become very high maintenance recently)

Latest David Walliams books.

I've been pleased with some WI-C310s - they might not be teenager suitable as they have a wire between them (rather than just being literally ear sized) but I really like that as it increases their battery life massively so I'm not constantly needing to charge them.

A Bluetooth speaker (ideally waterproof and I think they call it "shockproof" i.e. won't break if knocked) might also be a really good plan, but with the latter it might also depend what other people have got. Amongst my friendship group (late twenties) we all have the same brand of speaker so they can be linked together and the same sound played out of all of them.

Depending on stationery love, could you also think about a fountain pen and some lovely ink? I probably got my first fountain pen at that age, and it sparked a total love of pens - the fact I could write in any ink colour was also fab.

SpookyScarySkeletons · 08/01/2022 09:08

Oh and I was given the fluffiest, softest, warmest teddy blanket from Dunelm Mill and it keeps going walkabout and finding its way to her bedroom Hmm

I think they are about a tenner and there's a few different colours.

Nekoness · 08/01/2022 09:08

Hoodies from Hype were a big hit. Oodie was hated as too heavy. Game for pc that was biggest hit - YouTubers life. Honestly though, it was the gift of money and the ability to pick out the gift that appears to be most important at this age.
