I am wondering what to have for dinner on christmas eve that is yummy but does not involve too much cooking or prep. What will you be eating?

We are having Fish Pie, peas and sweetcorn really nursery food, but OMG.

It does involve a bit of prep but it is worth it. IMO

Easy for me to say, DH does all the cooking in our house.

BrieVinDeAlkaSeltzer · 21/12/2007 12:55

And last year it was, Italian baked Cod with basmati rice.

veryberry · 21/12/2007 12:57

Sounds really nice Brie. I'm not actually a fish person but I like the idea of nursery food. Perhaps I will do sausages and mash.

Lilymaid · 21/12/2007 13:19

We have the ham hot that night, so we can then have it cold on Boxing Day (and thereafter ...)

Hulababy · 21/12/2007 13:24

We always have dinner at either MILs or my parents. This year it will be MILs as seeing my parents day before. DH has asked his mum if she will do some type of pie as it is qhat he fancies. We don't have anything specific on Christmas Eve.

claricebeansmumhasnomincepies · 21/12/2007 13:24

We're the same Lilymaid - ham and jacket pots

TiStHeSeAsOnToBeTaLcY · 21/12/2007 13:25

stuffed MIL

LIZS · 21/12/2007 13:36

We normally do salmon - either en croute or baked with a watercress sauce.

hannahsaunt · 21/12/2007 13:42

Ham here too with ratouille and baked potatoes.

in our house it is the one day of the year that we hand over food control to the kiddies (makes up for me forcing a brussel sprout on them for xams dinner).

last year they opted for macdonalds.......no idea yet where they will suggest tho this year.

I have however been dropping hints about a pub lunch tho, altho is that gonna endanger my health what with all the office workers piling in before heading home to madness????

any suggestions very welcome (bear in mind tho that I AM NOT COOKING)

psycho ponders sushi, but knows that kiddies will gag and scream and run

Chacasta · 21/12/2007 14:08

Erm we always have an Indian Takeaway! Well with all that cooking the next day who wants to spend Xmas Eve cooking and cleaning up

jofeb04 · 21/12/2007 14:22

We normally have a chinese, but that is mainly because we cook the turkey that day!

CremolaFirCone · 21/12/2007 14:29

takeaway pizas all round.
although last year i did a mexican selection
chargrilled beef
bean chilli
grated cheese
guacamole
green salad
tomato salsa
flour tortillas

it was as different as i could think from Xmas dinner and for anyone who was saving themselves for the big day- they could just nibble.

RIELOVESBACARDI · 21/12/2007 14:32

We are having similar to Brie. I have made a salmon, smoked haddock and king prawn fish pie which is in the freezer. We will have it with peas followed by pannacotta with raspberry compote.

We have the same every xmas eve,...Tartiflette which is a like a french dauphinoise potatoes with lots of pancetta, reblochon (smelly) cheese, cream (Yum), and butter (double yum!)..with some watercress salad and french bread. It's really easy and very tasty

PeachyHasAFiggyPudInTheOven · 21/12/2007 17:56

At a restaurant every Christmas Eve (term loosely used.... family pub chain, but OK enough) so off the menu.

When everyone gets to here on the gastro tour (yeah right) it's roast pork (maybe with vanilla) with abel and cole citrus potato cakes and cabbage with bacon and chestnuts. Cold meats and cheeses the first night they're here as we don't know what time we'll all get back.

mumbear · 21/12/2007 18:05

VictorianSqualor · 21/12/2007 18:09

We are having sausage rolls, cheese straws, mince pies, banana bread (cooked by the DC's over this weekend) and toasted teacakes, scones with jam and cream and buckets of tea.
Maybe with lashings of ginger beer

nametaken · 21/12/2007 18:12
