It’s happened - the turkey is frozen 😬

Just a small 3 person M&S turkey breast joint. DH put it into the fridge yesterday first thing, but turns out it’s a 48h defrost πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ˜¬πŸ€£

Can I salvage it? Am I likely to poison us all leaving it out to defrost in the kitchen today? Only takes an hour to cook and not eating till 5pm so I have a decent amount of time!

I'd just leave it out to defrost then back in fridge. Cooking properly kill any bugs.

ItsSnowJokes · 25/12/2021 06:25

I had this one year and tried to defrost it in water. Keep changing the cold water as it will warm up.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 25/12/2021 06:27

Take it out of the fridge now. It will finish defrosting more quickly at room temperature.

Mumdiva99 · 25/12/2021 06:30

A small joint will cook fine from frozen. But leave it on the side to defrost and it will by cooking time..

Cupcakegirl13 · 25/12/2021 06:31

If it only takes an hour to cook it must be small so leave out of fridge now and it’ll be fine to cook by lunchtime no problem

KatherineJaneway · 25/12/2021 06:33

I'd take it out of the fridge now so it is ready to be cooked at lunchtime.

Cosmos123 · 25/12/2021 06:36

Defrost in warm water. Keep changing the water.

TheCrowFromBelow · 25/12/2021 07:00

If you defrost in water use cold not warm and change every half hour, but unless your kitchen is really hot I would just leave it on the side for now.

ThesecondLEM · 25/12/2021 07:16

Don't use warm water, tempting as that might be, you are providing a perfect home for Sam and Ella.

HelloDulling · 25/12/2021 07:24

Just take it out now, it will be fine by 4pm.

Mummyoflittledragon · 25/12/2021 07:29

It’ll be fine to defrost on the countertop. That’s what I did yesterday and ascertained it was defrosted before bed so popped it in the fridge.

Cold. Not warm water. That’s a recipe for the squids.

Westfacing · 25/12/2021 07:29

Don't go soaking in water, warm or otherwise, it's not necessary - a turkey breast joint out of the fridge will defrost by this afternoon.

Bobbybobbins · 25/12/2021 07:41

Deffo get it out of the fridge

Lindy2 · 25/12/2021 07:49

I always defrost the turkey out of the fridge. There's no room in there. Everyone has survived plenty of Christmases doing it that way.

PicaK · 25/12/2021 07:59

Room temp is fast. Get it out now.

RowsOfHolly · 25/12/2021 08:04

I defrost things on the draining board as the metal conducts the cold away quickly (that nay not be the most scientifically correct description, but things defrost faster on a metal surface).

@RowsOfHolly i was just coming on to say put it in a metal dish!

OP, if it doesn't defrost in time, I'd suggest delaying your turkey dinner until tomorrow, rather than risk food poisoning

gogohm · 25/12/2021 08:18

Should be fine if left on the worktop.

WutheringHeights66 · 25/12/2021 08:23

Do you have an Instapot or pressure cooker ? You can cook a chicken from frozen solid in less than an hour then brown it in the oven..

purplesequins · 25/12/2021 08:34

we had chicken last year (incident with the goose farm & fox) and the bugger was still frozen solid after 48 hours in the fridge as per instructuons.

we cooked it from frozen in the end and used a meat thermometer to make sure it was cooked through.

purplesequins · 25/12/2021 08:38

btw we put it in the colt oven and turned it up to 150 for half an hour and then turned the oven up and cooked as per instructions.

You don’t get food poisoning from cooking things from frozen. You get food poisoning from not cooking things from frozen thoroughly enough. If the inside, by the bone, and the whole joint reaches the required temperature for the required amount of time they will be fine.

The issue is that for a massive whole Turkey to cook a frozen inside enough would be likely to leave the outside burnt or desiccated. But this is a small piece.

BackBackBack · 25/12/2021 08:55

Another one saying get it out on the counter now. If you don't need to cook it until 3.45 (assuming you'll want to rest it for 15 minutes before serving) and it only takes an hour to cool then you should be fine.

nannybeach · 25/12/2021 09:07

Same here, full size turkey all the family coming. Ended up in cold water, yes back in fridge. Take it out 30 minutes before cooking,I do that with all meat, much safer than cooking straight. From a very cold fridge
