I just bought some bits at local co-op. It came to 72.99 and it wasn't much.

How on earth do those on a low income cope?

Are prices getting very high very quick or is it just me?

Yanbu. Prices seem to be rocketing.

Flaunch · 22/12/2021 18:11

Everything is more expensive. We’re not on a particularly low income but I’m really feeling it! Especially the increase in the cost of diesel.

JingleBellez · 22/12/2021 18:12

I literally had the cheapest tv xmas guide, some teeny salmon rounds, some chicken satay. Box of choccy biccies, some kinder santas (and kinder large eggs so that may have racked it up somewhat). 2 bottles of coke etc.

I've 3 kids and 2 incomes - how on earth do those on nmw cope?

Yes I agree.

I’m lucky enough to not really notice the cost of a shopping basket as we both earn well (it hasn’t always been that way). But recently I’ve definitely thought the cumulative cost of a basket is excessive for what’s in there

I particularly find convenience type places charge a fortune for household items like washing tablets, cleaning products and loo roll etc, compared to getting them at b&m etc

we live rurally. we normally go to S Yorks to see his family. The cost of fuel is too high. We won't see his family or kid's cousin this year.

Yes, Brexit + energy prices, cost of living issues next year will be awful.

HollowTalk · 22/12/2021 18:14

Last night I was watching an old episode of Dinnerladies with my mum. It must've been about 20 years old. They were talking about winning a voucher for £50 and one of them said they could buy 10 bottles of wine for that. They could do that now, 20 years on! Although I agree that some things are more expensive, I think other things are much cheaper.

JingleBellez · 22/12/2021 18:14

it's going up so much and so fast... frightening what things could cost by next Xmas

I really want to go solar next year to help offset energy price increases.

In the year to Nov, 2021, the official stats show that UK food price inflation was 2.5%.

what things do you think are cheaper?

Love Dinnerladies. Victoria Wood used to shop in Booths in Windermere, she wore a beige mac, beige hat and kept her head down to avoid being recognised.

I first ran into her (literally) as I was 3 and running away from my Gran. She called my name and she was cross. VW looked up (same forename). My gran apologised as I ran off. She always said hello after that.

I got diagnosed with adhd later lol.

Roselilly36 · 22/12/2021 18:19

Prices have definitely increased, but shopping in a local convenience type store is always going to be more expensive than a supermarket.

FanGirlX · 22/12/2021 18:19

Yes, food plus gas bills, plus petrol.

NI rise coming in April, along with council tax rises and further gas price increases.

JingleBellez · 22/12/2021 18:19

Where I live it's the only supermarket. There's a spar but it's more pizza and chips...

You went to the Co Op. And bought Salmon. And premium chocolate.

Food prices aren't sky rocketing, you bought expensive food. £72 could feed my family of 6 for the week, and we would eat well.

Yes, 18 months ago we were spending £80 per week on food, now we're spending around £130. We aren't buying much different but it's costing us so much more.

We can absorb it (just!) as increased my hours at work recently but combined with rising energy and fuel prices, the increase in national insurance etc... It's going to cause issues, we can absorb it all.

No alcohol, no nappies, no Toiletries on our weekly shop.

I went to coop and bought I kid you not a 10pence piece salmon pate thing.

Kinder premium since when? It's hardly Lindt.

Yes you're right... although I find co-op to be one of the most expensive supermarkets! I shop at Lidl and Aldi, they seem to be much cheaper than anywhere else but food overall does seem to be going up

Stellaris22 · 22/12/2021 18:21

The worrying thing is how energy prices are increasing still but there's no media coverage. It's going to have a serious knock on effect to food prices and other things.

It's only going to get worse unfortunately, gas prices are scary right now.

It really adds up doesn't it. You can't cut down easily either. I'm scared to turn the heating on.
