Facebook posts announcing they are doing charity donation instead of cards?

Does anyone else find this annoying? I know the people doing this have plenty cash so they could easily do both. It would make more sense to say that they are stopping cards as they believe bad for environment. Charity donation a don’t need to be announced do they?

Totally agree. Don’t send cards if you don’t want to. Give to charity if you do want to. Neither need to be announced.

Diddytv · 22/12/2021 13:11

I would be embarrassed to announce like this.

Evil bastards raising awareness of charity and trying to do a bit of good in the season of greed and selfishness. Utter utter bastards.

Stay off Facebook if it raises your blood pressure that much.

Lokdok · 22/12/2021 15:01

It’s truly pathetic! Also it’s always a pitiful amount like 10/20 quid as if cards would have been that cheap. Anything where you decide on someone else’s behalf to donate what would have been theirs to charity is tacky as hell.

Raising awareness and supporting charities is good. No one is arguing with that. But doing it instead of cards like you’re a saviour is pathetic and weird.
Starcaller · 22/12/2021 15:04

Can't say it bothers me. I find it interesting seeing what charities people have chosen. Someone's post made me go and look up a charity I hadn't heard of and make a donation myself.

I don't send cards regardless anyway. Cannot be bothered with it! But maybe if I was a usual card sender I'd post something to explain why I wasn't this year.

Alarmset · 22/12/2021 15:05

I don't like it either.

Send cards or don't

Make a donation or don't

The two aren't connected. People don't send cards to save themselves the bother (and maybe the environmental aspect) and then make a token donation which would in no way equate to what they would have spent on cards and postage.

I always suspect that those who tell you about it never actually make the donation anyway...

kikipie · 22/12/2021 15:05

I do this. Mainly so people know why we haven’t sent cards. I donate to charity all year though

LubaLuca · 22/12/2021 15:09

I agree, it's crass. Giving should be done quietly without any fanfare. Nobody cares enough about getting cards for a public announcement to be necessary, so it is simply to advertise their own benevolence.

Why do you need to tell people you aren't sending cards? They know that if they don't receive one, they certainly know it after the first year
Megan2018 · 22/12/2021 15:19

I am always tempted to ask to see the receipt as an awful lot seem to say they are donating and then don’t……or they donate £10 which is hardly the same.

I manage to both send cards and make a decent donation to at least one charity. The non card senders imply it’s all or nothing. Charities make a good return on cards, they aren’t especially benefiting from people not sending any!

kikipie · 22/12/2021 16:48

Because I don’t want people to think they’re the only ones that haven’t been sent a card. It’s not rocket science

Just sent £500 to the local food bank. That okay for you?
herestoyoucolinrobinson · 22/12/2021 16:51

I'm not on Facebook so I got send these on WhatsApp. I was bemused and just said I don't send cards anyway!

If you want to do that surely you buy Christmas cards from that charity?
converseandjeans · 22/12/2021 16:53

I don't think sending cards is related to donating to charity. People just don't want the faff of buying, writing, sending etc. They don't cost enough to justify doing a large charity donation instead.

I like sending & getting cards. Mostly to people I don't see often.

herestoyoucolinrobinson · 22/12/2021 16:54

Although my mum is always concerned when someone who normally sends a card doesn't. I've trolled through obituaries before looking for people. She's not on Facebook either though so not sure why I'm saying this 😂

Christmas cards can be way cheaper than a tenner. Card Factory do 3 for 2 on their £1.99 boxes of cards. They do actually split profits between a variety of charities detailed on the cards.

Trolling on obituaries is awful Grin
champions55 · 22/12/2021 16:59

I can't see anything wrong with this at all. It lets people know why u haven't sent a card and let them choose whether to still send one.

I've thought about doing it myself. I don't usually donate to a charity at Christmas so it would be something I wouldn't usually do and beneficial to the charity if we all donated £10-20 instead of sending cards it would really help the charity.

PeaceONoeuf · 22/12/2021 16:59

God why do people get so cross about this.

  1. I don’t want to send cards for environmental reasons
  2. Rather than keeping the £30/35 I donate to charity
  3. I post this on Facebook so my friends hear about an interesting charity that has supported us or we think is essential and because I like my friends and wish them will at Christmas

Just scroll past if you think it’s pointless.

kikipie · 22/12/2021 17:05

The amounts I donate to charities far outweigh the cost of cards and postage. Happy to provide proof to anyone who asks 🤷‍♀️

It's the same for most people, whether they send cards as well or not. There's no need to announce it though, nobody cares a jot about who's giving what to which charities; it's a personal matter that doesn't need to be evidenced or made public.

"Won't be at the remembrance parade this year, but dropped a generous donation in with the poppy collectors."

"Won't be at the church fair this year, but I put extra in the collection plate on Sunday."

It's doing that, which is unnecessary and quite an awkward way to demonstrate your generosity.

herestoyoucolinrobinson · 22/12/2021 17:32

@girlmom21 massive facepalm 😂

*trawling

(extremely late correction - I'm very tired 😂)

Soubriquet · 22/12/2021 17:34

We spent exactly £2 on Christmas cards…

I don’t send any out, and they were from my kids to their friends.
