Christmas dinner alone

Christmasismyoyster · 21/12/2021 23:54

I’m going to be alone on Christmas Day, I’m trying to make it a nice bit of quiet time alone rather than depressing.
Left to my own devices I’ll eat a few chocolates, decide I’m too lazy to cook and then make a slice of toast - which doesn’t really scream festive.

So what would you eat? It needs to feel a little luxurious, but be suuuuper easy to prepare. I can’t see me making a whole Christmas dinner for myself anyway! Xmas Smile

Also open to any suggestions for how to spend the day other than getting drunk Xmas Grin

I listened to a lady on radio 4 today who was saying she anticipated ending up alone at Xmas so a few weeks ago she decided that she wanted to be alone and have ‘Blissmas’ so her day was all about what gives her bliss! So if toast, chocs and whatever is blissful, do it! I’d cook and enjoy doing so I think of it were me. I’m so envious I have to say.

Jouleigh · 22/12/2021 00:01

You don't have to do the full Christmas dinner. What are your favourite foods and drinks?
Get all of them and indulge. Buy yourself a lovely gift or two, something that feels like a real treat.
Watch your favourite Christmas films, listen to music and read.
Also pop on Mumsnet and be glad you aren't posting about fights with the in-laws, partners and children.
What lever you choose to do have a lovely day, you deserve it WineCakeThanks

GlitterSquid · 22/12/2021 00:01

Err.... patè on toast? With a little squoze of lemon on the side?

Fancy ploughman's (just fill the fridge with your favourite cheeses/meats/pies/nuts etc)

Loads of those little Chinese and Indian nibbles (spring rolls, samosas etc)

A rotisserie chicken (bought on Xmas eve) and a huge tiger loaf?

I live on my own. My life is a rolling buffet.

GlitterSquid · 22/12/2021 00:03

Ooh all the major supermarkets do those 'ready to cook' racks of ribs now.
No fuss, bosh it straight in the oven, slather it in sauce, half a plate of coleslaw.

Bish bosh.

GlitterSquid · 22/12/2021 00:03

And a full size family gateaux.

Fuck it. It's Christmas.

Flamingoose · 22/12/2021 00:04

I think I'd get a posh ready meal and lots of snacky things. And do a big jigsaw puzzle with a glass of something and radio 4 on. Might watch a film in bed. Blissmas!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 22/12/2021 00:05

I had a couple of Christmas days totally alone, and then a couple where I was alone in the day, then had company at night. I felt like other people made a huge deal of it but it was FINE.

Here’s what I did:

Went to M&S and got lovely food that just had to be whacked in the oven. Nice croissants for breakfast. Good bottle of wine for the evening. Crisps/nuts/cheese/snacky stuff - I am not really a sweet person.

Got a really great book - the first year I read The Thirteenth Tale and it was just perfect.

Got very posh bath stuff, and new cosy pjs. I had a late breakfast, a lovely afternoon bath with my book, then put my new pjs on.

Watched not-Christmas TV other than the soaps. I felt like it was better for my mental health not to have happy families rammed down my throat, but obviously that is just me. Likewise, I stayed off social media.

Made sure I had nice plans for Boxing Day. That might not be possible this year, I know.

I hope you have a nice day, OP.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 22/12/2021 00:07

Party food from M&S

A baked camembert

M&S Gastro pub lasagne

Some trays of deliciousness from Cook

A takeaway curry ordered on Xmas Eve and reheated on Xmas day

chatw0o0 · 22/12/2021 00:07

I think I would do myself a little cheese board - favourite cheeses, nice crackers, various chutneys, pieces of fruit etc. And would definitely have some all the Yule log or a meringue roulade type thing for dessert.

Or maybe a variety of nice semi-ready / ready meals from M&S.

jo55ie · 22/12/2021 00:13

Aww you need to indulge yourself... get your favourite foods and drinks and pamper bits, bath bits, creams and comfy clothes that you feel great in. Just indulge yourself on the day enjoy that you can watch/do whatever you like without any interference from anyone else. Bliss x

JurgensCakeBabyJesus · 22/12/2021 00:15

A really good steak, takes a few minutes to cook, either with fresh crusty bread or stick a jacket potato in the oven earlier on, takes a while to cook but you don't have to do anything to it

stillvicarinatutu · 22/12/2021 00:17

I've just made the easiest roast dinner ever and frozen 5 portions so it's an easy reheat !

Chicken crown in the bag
Proper roast potatoes
Then microwave mash, greens , broccoli/cauliflower cheese, carrot and swede, stuffing balls and pigs in blankets , frozen Yorkshire puds and bought gravy ! Easiest thing ever !
So that's my Xmas day dinner sorted. With prosecco. I'll lay in bed with the pooches and eat cheese and crackers, then microwave my Xmas Dinner ! Yum !

Luredbyapomegranate · 22/12/2021 00:19

There is a similar thread to this a few days back, and someone else mentioned and M and S indivisible beef Wellington, which would absolutely get my vote, along with pre-prepped veg. Maybe Christmas pudding ice cream for pudding (Sainsburys).

Naice ham, bread, cheese, crackers, olives maybe salami for your snack meals

Smoked salmon and scrambled egg somewhere

Croissants

A posh box of chocs

Posh crisps

Depending how into booze you are - some fancy half bottles. Or if you are more the low rent drinker, some fun minis. But either way, good red and fizz. Sparkling water so you don’t drink too much. Posh orange juice for your posh breakfast. Gin or Sherry etc

Also plan what you will wear - whatever mood you want to create you want to feel good

Similarly decorate a bit - a table top Christmas tree, Holly, fairy lights around the fire place

Plan your menu everyday, your entertainment and a trip out.

I would plan

  • 3 great films. Varied moods
  • order 3 great books (proper books) ditto
  • 3 good bits of telly
  • a fun streamer binge watch (you could just start it, although I could well imagine spending a day at Christmas under the duvet watching the crown / Bridgerton / outlander
  • a podcast or two you would like to try (having the radio or podcasts on us good for background hum)

Go to church! I would! I’m not religious but midnight mass and/or a carol service

A couple of good walks - one to get holly, one to a fun local place (maybe somewhere with Christmas decs)

A play or the theatre if you have that around

Go admire/lust after/point and laugh at the hunt on Boxing Day (if you rural)

Christmas dip with wild swimmers! (they are frogging everywhere!)

Check your local paper, there will be all sorts going on - get out to some things

Bliss mass is a great way of putting it

AsanteSana · 22/12/2021 00:19

I am alone for Christmas every year and just treat it as another normal day really, but a few self indulgent moments!

Egg rolls for breakfast, lunch will be a home cooked East African style chicken curry with rice, cooked with peas and chopped bell peppers added, plus some bay leaves and cardamon pods. Ugali as a side dish. Late tea, just some crusty white bread, cheese and pickles.
Can't be arsed with crappy Christmas television so will carry on with a plastering and decorating project to take away the mind numbing boredom of it all.

Luredbyapomegranate · 22/12/2021 00:20

Someone also said on the last thread that Sarah Millican has a good Christmas Day twitter feed, and mumsnet always quite busy.

RubyFakeLips · 22/12/2021 00:21

I’d also go to M&S, Waitrose or even a CookShop. Wonder if there’s time to order some of that Cote Brasserie at home stuff which looks quite nice. Get yourself a lovely breakfast in,

Throw money at this in whatever way floats your boat. For me that would be new pyjamas or loungewear, some luxe shower products, a new candle and a bottle of champagne. Fresh flowers.

I’d have a late morning, shower and wash my hair, have cheese on toast with avocado and do a crossword. Maybe a task I enjoy, I love organising my wardrobe and it makes me feel happy and relaxed, I wouldn’t be doing any ‘chores’. Then either sit down to a box set you’ve always fancied or buy a streaming subscription you don’t have and watch something new. Alternatively an audio book/new podcast and a puzzle. Maybe go for a walk as it’s getting dark. Evening on the sofa with comedy films and several French 75s. There’s also a high chance I’d just hit the booze after my shower too and spend the day slobbing!

pinkmeeple · 22/12/2021 00:24

I'd lie in. Then for breakfast have a warm croissant and freshly squeezed orange juice.
I'd go for a nice walk and then come home and soak in the bath.
A really good steak and accompaniments for lunch.
Afternoon/evening with a good book/film, cheese and crackers and some expensive chocolate.

I'd probably avoid alcohol as it can make me a bit maudlin, maybe a Baileys before bed. I'd also put my phone in flight mode and avoid social media for the day (I only wouldn't turn my phone off altogether as I may want to take photos on my walk).

ZenNudist · 22/12/2021 00:24

If I couldn't be bothered cooking it would be smoked salmon on nice bread followed by a tonne of cheese and biscuits.

Whats your favourite easy food?

Even som crusty break and chilli dipping oil plus charcuterie and things like plives and sundries tomato.

Or have the toast but put pate on it!

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 22/12/2021 00:27

When I lived alone, for a treat I would roast a poussin! I would have all the trimmings, roasts, gravy. I lived like a king Grin

Itslit · 22/12/2021 00:29

Breakfast: Croissants and Nutella
Brunch: smoked salmon and scrambled eggs
Lunch: chicken, stuffing and cranberry sauce sandwich
Tea: Tea and cakes
Dinner: 3 bottles of Prosecco

Watch my favourite films
Go for a crisp, cold walk
Have some friends round Xmas night for board games and drinks

ODFOgrinch · 22/12/2021 00:32

Bacon sandwich for breakfast with your favourite bread, lightly toasted and fat slices of room temperature ripe tomato.

For lunch, a good ready made pomme dauphinoise ( MandS or similar), green beans and a lovely thick steak cooked to your liking.

Then settle down in the evening with cheese and fruit and your favourite tipple.

Bit of a walk and a Christmas movie in there somewhere, or a good book.

Holothane · 22/12/2021 00:33

My day of bliss would be scrambled eggs for breakfast,
Shower then new pjs
New books 80s music to listen too
Dinner would be prawns and more prawns king prawn fried rice from Chinese or stir fry.
Pud salted caramel or chocolate cake
Favourite films, more books tea nibbles buffet stuff. No news politics.
No running around after h. Bliss.

GrumpyPanda · 22/12/2021 00:38

Quick seared duck breast should be christmassy enough? Along with some simple veggies and potatoes or mash.

StarryNightSparkles · 22/12/2021 00:39

If I were to spend Christmas alone then I would totally spoil myself 😊 lots of self care pampering, booze, nibbles, tv, mags, books and daily buffets. Long walks all wrapped up, I would stay up as late as I wanted watching Netflix or listening to music and get out of bed when suited me.

Sorry just re read and seen you were asking about food op 😳 in that case.... crisps, chocs, homemade rolls, quiche, pizza, salad, soup, melon and salmon with melba toast, turkey in a foil tin with baby potatoes and veg, sausage rolls, ice cream, cake, definitely cheese and biscuits everything thats lovely and healthy for us over Christmas 😳

ilovesooty · 22/12/2021 00:45

I'm going out for a 4 course curry.
