Vegetarian gluten-free Christmas lunch

Does anyone have any recommendations for meat-free, gluten-free suggestions for Christmas dinner? Either shop-bought or easy recipes?

I can do one or the other, but not both!

Thanks

Roast is easy to make GF. Ignore the Yorkshire - just don’t give the GF person one. Make turkey, potatoes (with no goose fat) and veggies as usual. Gf sausages are easily to get (just don’t give them to the veggie)
Make a stuffing/nut roast with gluten free bread.
Chop and fry and onion and some peppers/mushrooms for a few minutes in butter and oil. Tip into a bowl. Add gf breadcrumbs (from bread) some chopped nuts and herbs. Add an egg and some cheese and pack into a loaf tin.
There is a basic recipe you can follow in bbc food - but basically you just Chuck stuff in.

Since when was turkey vegetarian?

OP there are tons of GF and veggie options these days. Go to a supermarket, and the frozen section and pick from a range of options. Fill your boots.

greyinganddecaying · 17/12/2021 22:15

Thanks - just not sure where to start & hoping someone would have a tried-and-tested recommendation 🙂

Gf and veg gravy is everywhere, as are sausages and stuffing. Morrisons, m &s or any big supermarket. Yorkshire puds gf morrisons or make own. Nut roast morrisons too. Easy

I'm veggie and my DSis is coeliac, coming to us for Christmas, so I'm making a nut roast using toasted nuts, squash and fried mushrooms added to a gluten free stuffing mix which binds it together.

I've bought frozen GF yorkshire pudding.

will use coconut oil for the roasties as it reaches a nice high temp. if you par boil and then toss them in a fine polenta before roasting you can get the same crunch you would get from using flour.

I only discovered since DSis was diagnosed how much gluten is found in all sorts of products - have had to buy GF version of my usual veg bouillon (for the gravy) - have really learnt to read the ingredients on packaging carefully.

If you keep to real food and only use things from a packet that specifically say they are GF you should be fine.

I am veggie. I really enjoy the roast that Quorn do (I don’t like any other Quorn things). My meat eating family really like it as well. It is also gluten free. I picked one up from Sainsburys on offer for £2 today.

I’d just do a normal roast dinner, with the Quorn roast, all the veg and gravy but no Yorkshire puddings or just use gf flour to make them.

greyinganddecaying · 17/12/2021 22:46

It's the substitute for turkey I'm struggling with - are there any decent gluten-free nut roasts out there? I'm afraid the quorn pseudo-chicken didn't go down well last time!

Clive's nutb roast. You can get it from Waitrose

greyinganddecaying · 17/12/2021 23:29

That looks ideal - thanks!

(As a turkey substitute, served with all the usual roast trimmings.)

A frittata or crustless quiche?

Or stuffed bell pepper/field mushroom/aubergine. Make some savoury veg mince, or GF turkey stuffing, top with cheese and roast with the rest of the veg.

Cauliflower cheese/macaroni cheese with GF pasta, in cute individual dishes.

Bussinbussin · 17/12/2021 23:33

Nut roasts are a bit marmite for vegetarians, I can't stand them tbh and would rather just have a roast without the meat. Maybe check which side of the fence this person is on.

SirVixofVixHall · 18/12/2021 10:43

DH makes the Jamie Oliver nut roast and it is really delicious and gluten free.

Dollywilde · 18/12/2021 10:44

We had some gf veggies over a couple of years back for a festive lunch, I made pastry with gf flour and then did a mushroom Wellington, veg and gravy. Followed it with a flourless chocolate cake.

FlamingGoat · 18/12/2021 10:49

I'll be having one of these with my roast. Absolutely gorgeous.

I'm a bit confused. Is the entire meal to be vegetarian and GF, or do you have one or more vegetarians at the table and one or more GF people at the table, or perhaps one or more GF vegetarians?

Oobleyyy · 18/12/2021 10:53

This is absolutely delicious:

I am coeliac and I just leave out the breadcrumbs and it makes no difference.

Trust me, it’s divine!!! (It’s not Jamie Oliver, who I’m not a fan of, but Anna Jones, whose recipes I love.)

Obviously it's not. But, why should the OP have to forgoe her turkey as some people choose not/cannot eat certain things.

I was so disappointed when I tried that a bit ago, I'm tempted to retry as maybe I got a bad batch. As I've seen others saying it was good. It tastes like mold, when I tried it Shock

For a turkey replacement I'd go for either one of the quorn roasts or a nut roast, I can second that the jamie Oliver one is delicious!

BunnyBlanket · 18/12/2021 13:11

GF bisto is exactly the same as normal in terms of flavour. Make GF Yorkshires by using cornflour - it makes lovely light and crispy ones. One member of my family is GF but we all eat GF for ease (except bread. GF bread is awful).

Personally I’d make a normal roast (olive oil for roasties) using the subs I noted above.

And then a meat and gf alternative instead of turkey.

RoRosie · 18/12/2021 13:43

I’ve recommended this vegan haggis on mumsnet a few times. It’s so delicious, easy, goes well with all the roast elements and acts as a GF stuffing as well as a main. I use dried beluga lentils that I soak in boiling water while doing the other elements but if you can’t find them green lentils work as well. I also add a grated courgette and an extra grated carrot and up the white pepper and nutmeg a little. It’s a little time consuming but you could make it the day before and bake it on the day. Also for anyone who’s not GF the leftovers are amazing as a vegan sausage roll with puff pastry. Add a smear of chutney on the pastry before adding the filling. One of my favourite recipe discoveries in ages.

I love that recipe too but this year I have the added complication of a vegan too so i'm trying this Tesco nutroast recipe instead.
Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 18/12/2021 15:35

That sounds delicious, @RoRosie - bookmarked for the New Year!

RoRosie · 18/12/2021 16:15

Enjoy @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g. It’s really so good. I usually have it with the traditional neeps and tatties but I’ve been experimenting with red cabbage and it goes so well. My only worry is I make it so often don’t know if I need something different for Christmas Day!
@greyinganddecaying just realised marmite isn’t gluten free so you’d have to leave that out and maybe up the stock a bit more if you were making this. Also you’d have to get gluten free pinhead oatmeal. Maybe it’s not so useful after all Xmas Blush

RoRosie · 18/12/2021 16:18

They do have the GF oats in Holland & barrett.
