I remember as a child being given a seemingly unlimited supply of chocolate from various members of the family in the form of selection boxes. Ds is 5 now and I thought about getting one for him, but when I looked at them I was at just how expensive they are. esp when you consider that if I bought the same chocolate separately it would probably cost me about half.

so do people still buy them?

not me

THEHOLLEANDERIVY · 19/12/2007 10:34

I dont buy them for my kids i just buy some bars of chocolate/sweets and put them in their stockings.

themoon66 · 19/12/2007 10:36

Oooh you've reminded me... I need to get some.

chopchopbusybusy · 19/12/2007 10:36

I bought two a few weeks ago in Morrisons. They were buy one get one free and so they were cheaper than buying the chocolate seperately.

GLAMpresentsforMAMAplease · 19/12/2007 10:36

Christmas isn't Christmas without a selection box, imho! The stocking ones are fab.I get the 3 for a fiver offers and give them to nephews and nieces. Plus I have one for DD as well. It's Christmas, after all!

SatsumaMoon · 19/12/2007 10:37

I don't get them for my dcs but remember getting up on Christmas day as a child, opening all m y presents and then going back to bed with an annual and a selection box - before breakfast

LoveMyGirls · 19/12/2007 10:38

I havent this year because I needed quite a few so i GOT THE MULTI PACKS OF CHOC BARS INSTEAD AND SPLIT THEM UP (sry caps) I also think we have enough wrapping and packaging to get rid of over christmas and a big box with plastic in like that seems a silly amount for no good reason!

wrappingpaperBOwZZAndribbons · 19/12/2007 10:38

No. I have bought my DC a bag of Thornton's choc coins and one of those elf bars each to go in their stockings. They will get chocolate enough from elsewhere. DS has already got a selection box from his football club.

JodieG1 · 19/12/2007 10:39

I buy them. I always used to have them as a child and loved them. I always get one each for their stockings.

sixlostmonkeys · 19/12/2007 10:41

christmas ain't christmas without a selection box and an annual.

heh, I've replaced the generation that says "ehh when i was a kid all we got was an orange and a new penny"

GLAMpresentsforMAMAplease · 19/12/2007 10:42

That's a good point, love my girls, about the packaging. I've offset my carbon footprint by not buying any thing from Mattel this year. Mainly books and a DS Lite.
But going back to selection boxes. It is compulsory understood that chocolate will be the first thing anyone will eat on Christmas Day. But then we're unhealthy like that

Alambil · 19/12/2007 11:21

I have got DS a tube of sweets instead of a whole selection box.

MellowChristmasEveryone · 19/12/2007 11:23

No, mine usually get a few in presents.

pollyannainexcelsis · 19/12/2007 11:25

I remember having one as a child every year too, but I don't get one for my dcs. We have a huge box of celebrations, chocolate tree decorations and other chocolates floating around, and I think that is enough. ds also has a birthday on Jan 2 and dd3 has a birthday on Jan 6, so we have so much unhealthy food in that period anyway.

MerryAnnSinglemas · 19/12/2007 11:26

ds's grandparents probably will, but bI think the packaging is too much - prefer to buy bags of chocolate coins, separate chocs etc. However, my childhood friend used to love having them - was a highlight of her Christmas ! I think they make you think you're getting lots of choc but really it's mostly cardboard which you know you'll never get round to cutting out the make your own Santa on the back...

Polgara2 · 19/12/2007 11:26

Yes, am in the Christmas isn't Christmas without a selection box brigade!

mumeeee · 19/12/2007 13:03

No I don't buy selection boxes. When my kids were small they used to get selectionboxes fron all the Christmas parties they went to, so didn't need more for Christmas. So I just bought some chocalote coins or a chocolate figure to put in thier stockings. Now they are teens I still do this.

HuwEdwards · 19/12/2007 13:03

agree with, and lol @ sixlostmonkeys!

RainbowMeg · 19/12/2007 19:38

I always buy a couple and wrap them up - Stow them safely under the tree so that if someone turn's up and surprises me with pressies for my kids- I have something to give in return!!!

kerryk · 19/12/2007 19:49

i remember 1 christmas i got a tv from my mum and dad, one of the portable ones.
i tipped all my selection boxes out into the empty tv box and nearly filled it
i remember lying in my bed on christmas night watching police acadamy on my new tv reading my new famous 5 book and stuffing my face till i was nearly sick.

HairyIrene · 19/12/2007 19:59

do they still have spangles equivlant in them?

dont like them now really but grew up with them the spangles lasted til march and everything else scoffed christmas day...bleukkk..

dont buy them for anyone

AwayinaMargoNooNooCribForABed · 19/12/2007 20:01

I used to have shiny money and a satsuma in my stocking.

I also used to get a plastic rain hat every year.

I'd much rather a Twix.

discoverlife · 19/12/2007 20:02

I buy a really nice/appropriate/fun mug and put some fav chocs in them and wrap with cellophane.

Elfsmummy · 19/12/2007 20:05

I still get a selection box every year from my mum!

And a stocking! I thought that sort of thing would stop when I became a mum but I'm not going to argue.
