I remember as a child being given a seemingly unlimited supply of chocolate from various members of the family in the form of selection boxes. Ds is 5 now and I thought about getting one for him, but when I looked at them I was at just how expensive they are. esp when you consider that if I bought the same chocolate separately it would probably cost me about half.

so do people still buy them?

The stocking still has a colouring book in it too (its become a tradition) and a satsuma.

It certainly is cheaper to buy all the chocolate bars separately, but selection boxes are magical for a child. They start at £1 for a small one in discount stores, and you can get quite a big one for £2.50. Even my teenage DS still appreciates a selection box. So yes, they are more expensive than the contents, but not prohibitively so and worth it IMO.

yes, usually on a buy one get one free offer (up until now 2nd has been for me ). And I don't think I have had a christmas where I haven't had one (from my mum the dh). This years have 5 items in them and were bogof for 99p. Individual bars couldn't have been much cheaper - and certainly not as much fun.
I used to make mine last for days, my brother used to eat his before breakfast then try and steal mine!

I remember getting a chocolate smoking set in my stocking in the 70's

My DBs and I always used to get one in our stockings. In previous years the DSes have received quite a lot. This year however, since the vast majority of people are "sending money/vouchers because it's cheaper" (another thread) then they don't have any!. I ahve got them some Thorntons choclate coins and a chocolate lolly each for their stockings though

They're always really cheap after Christmas.

I did buy them as party-bag presents for dd's party last week.
