When does Christmas 'end' for you?

When I was a kid I felt it was different compared to now. I felt like Christmas lasted for days after the big day, it would still feel magical between Christmas and new year. We'd visit family between Christmas and new year. I'm not sure if it was just because I was a kid, I was fortunate enough my parents had jobs where they'd be off for the whole festive period. But it felt like shops shut for a few days too! 🤷‍♀️

I'm not sure if it's just me or because I'm grown up but these days I feel like people forget about Christmas soon as the day is over. No Christmas songs played after the 25th! Shops back to normal. Often people take their decs down

What does it 'end' for you.

Won't be ready to let go this year. We all have covid at the minute. Dd was last to get and she won't be out of isolation until the 25th so we've pretty much missed the whole of December which makes me so sad 😪

I just feel like making it last this year. I don't take my tree down until after New Year's Day anyway!

I am going to look at doing things we'd normally do now after Christmas and hoping it'll still fee Christmassy !

12th night is when we take the decorations down. Some years we went to Spanish friends as it's a big thing for them

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 15/12/2021 13:14

It ends on 12th night, generally speaking, for things like tree/decorations/lights. But we keep the hygge going right through January by hosting two further festive dinners, one for PIL and one for BIL & SIL.

birkenstocks4ever · 15/12/2021 13:15

When the kids go back to school. In btw Xmas and new year we go to the panto, out for walks, watch a lot of films and eat our body weight in cheese. I don't want it to end on the 27th!

LittleBabyCheeses · 15/12/2021 13:15

It ends for us when the children go back to school.

AD80 · 15/12/2021 13:18

Maybe I live near a bunch of misery's. I always want to keep my decs up until the 12 night. A few people where I live decorate outside of their house but they are usually down between Boxing Day and new year 😪

12th night here too.
I honestly think Christmas has totally become skewed & starts too early & ends too early & misses the mark of the actual Christmas period.

We only have our tree up so far, no other decorations- we'll do them this weekend.

I would be utterly sick of it all if I'd started in November !

I LOVE the period between Christmas & new year. Time off work. . The pressure of providing Christmas done. Books & wine & films & amazing food. I turn total hobbit for about a week & love it

SinoohXaenaHide · 15/12/2021 13:20

We keep it going till 12th night, but it's terrible how difficult it is to get hold of more mince pies or Stollen if you run out on January 3rd.

Frymetothemoon · 15/12/2021 13:21

12th night for me, but then it comes from living in France. Once the Galette des Rois is done, then Christmas is over

Itwasgoodwhileitlasted · 15/12/2021 13:24

New years eve. The tree comes down and we have a fresh start

Yes, same here. I’m not religious so I don’t need to wait for Twelfth Night, and I love spending the couple of days before NYE cleaning and decluttering for a fresh start.

January 2nd

ThisIsStartingToBoreMe · 15/12/2021 13:36

I usually take things down the day after Boxing Day.

I think your right, it was different years ago. Years ago xmas started later and ended later but during the last 25 years or so it seems to have changed so that xmas pretty much starts in December and ends soon after Boxing Day. I prefer it like this.

TokyoSushi · 15/12/2021 13:38

New Years Day here!

MrsMoastyToasty · 15/12/2021 13:39

Boxing Day morning when DH goes back to work. He's usually run ragged making sure lorries go off to M&S food halls.

hotmeatymilk · 15/12/2021 13:41

Boxing Day. Big walk, leftovers, take the tree down and rejoice at my sitting room suddenly being twice the size again.

Everything from 27 Dec to 4/5 Jan, or whatever day is back to work, is just the fart end of the year with a real lack of energy about it. I really hate new year and don’t do it: on 27 Dec I just want to get on with things, spring clean, start new projects, shake off the old. Hate the “hanging around” nothingness feeling of waiting for new year.

Smileatthesmallthings · 15/12/2021 13:43

Usually get decs down 28th-ish. My family are coming 27th though this year so they'll be up a bit longer, though definitely down for new year.

Pascha · 15/12/2021 13:44

By NYE for us. Ds2's birthday is very soon after and we like to keep it separate.

Justme10 · 15/12/2021 13:45

When the schools go back. I love that chilled week between Christmas and new year when you don't know what day it is and you just relax with family watching tv/films and eating leftovers Xmas Grin

DamnShesaSexyChick · 15/12/2021 13:47

Early January, I love the week in between Christmas and New Year. That is the true festive period for me.

Mrsfussypants1 · 15/12/2021 13:49

Tuesday 4th January this year, I'm working 2nd &3rd and I follow on from what our family did as a child, tree is up for new years eve and day. We normally have family new years eve, after breakfast we all go to the coast for a walk, watch the annual new year's day dip in the sea, and back to ours for lunch. Decorations still up and sparkly, that's probably why our tree is bright and a miss mash of John Lewis/fenwicks glass Decorations not only Christmas themed but bright and celebratory (bottles of champagne, pineapples etc) to mark both Christmas and New year. I'm off the 4th so it all comes down then, and I switch out my winter cushion covers, duvet covers, candles for calm neutrals. I've bought a couple of new bits for our newly decorated lounge which I'm saving for the 4th.

CrispAndFrosty · 15/12/2021 13:50

6th Jan. It's all Christmas. Take it.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 15/12/2021 13:50

People in the UK seem to start too early earlier. Where I live there are usually Christmas markets from the first advent Sunday and a children's tradition on 6th but apart from that there isn't nearly as much advance hype as in the UK - schools don't wind the children up about Christmas or do anything different until the last few days, and usually break up on 22nd or 23rd.

In the UK its full on Christmas hype from mid November these days - no wonder people are desperate to see the back of it by Boxing Day and no longer want decorations up until 12th night!

TheSpanishApartment · 15/12/2021 13:53

6th Jan. We just put the tree up last weekend, so that's about 4 weeks.

NalPolishRemover · 15/12/2021 13:54

I would find it unutterably depressing to face into taking our decorations down on the 26th.
That and Christmas eve are my fav days of all. Christmas eve for the anticipation & 26th for a day to back. Lazy lie in, left overs to work through, presents to use / read/ eat / look at etc
I simply can't imagine taking down my tree that day!

NalPolishRemover · 15/12/2021 13:55

Bask not back
