When does Christmas 'end' for you?

When I was a kid I felt it was different compared to now. I felt like Christmas lasted for days after the big day, it would still feel magical between Christmas and new year. We'd visit family between Christmas and new year. I'm not sure if it was just because I was a kid, I was fortunate enough my parents had jobs where they'd be off for the whole festive period. But it felt like shops shut for a few days too! 🤷‍♀️

I'm not sure if it's just me or because I'm grown up but these days I feel like people forget about Christmas soon as the day is over. No Christmas songs played after the 25th! Shops back to normal. Often people take their decs down

What does it 'end' for you.

Won't be ready to let go this year. We all have covid at the minute. Dd was last to get and she won't be out of isolation until the 25th so we've pretty much missed the whole of December which makes me so sad 😪

I just feel like making it last this year. I don't take my tree down until after New Year's Day anyway!

I am going to look at doing things we'd normally do now after Christmas and hoping it'll still fee Christmassy !

Day after Boxing Day 🤣

I love the run up to Christmas but once it’s over I’m pretty much done with it, I don’t really celebrate new year and the decorations usually come down a couple days after Christmas.

Nanalisa60 · 15/12/2021 19:46

The problem with the Christmas decks is that loads of people put them up after fireworks night and Then the rest of November so they are fed up with there decks by Boxing Day, i don’t put mine up until first weekend in December and they stay up until 5th/6th jan. I really like the week between Christmas and new year I find it very relaxing, going for walks, eating, drinking watching movies and box sets and enjoying the house.

Kings Day

joyinthegloom · 15/12/2021 19:49

Decorations down on 12th night, but Christmas feels finished once we go back to work around the 4th. But Christmas hasn't started here yet apart from advent calendars. I don't feel it really starts until the kids break up on Friday - we'll get the tree on Saturday and then have a straight two weeks of lovely Christmassy-ness.

12th Night

lonsdaleshorts · 15/12/2021 20:00

28 or 28 December for us. I like a clean and tidy house going into the new year.

Anjo2011 · 15/12/2021 20:08

With regards to the tree it’s normally down by New Year’s Eve. I like all of the presents to be in the children’s rooms and not in a pile in the living room! Pre children ( and covid) I wouldn’t even put a tree up as I would go on holiday

SunscreenCentral · 15/12/2021 20:16

Well our tree isn't up yet! I'm really looking forward to it this weekend 🎄☺️
The tree will be down again probably around New Years, a good clean-up etc but I take the lights off and keep them around until the 6th. I love the fairy lights!

tigger1001 · 15/12/2021 20:21

I've taken them down on Boxing Day before and other years just after new year. But generally 30th/31st, depending when I'm back to work. This year I'm not back to 5th so might be a bit later. Just depends on when I get sick of the clutter.

I love the week between Christmas and new year as we generally have a chilled out time but I don't need the Christmas stuff up for that.

I need my house back and clutter free by the time I go back to work

luverlybubberly · 15/12/2021 20:24

When it's back to school on 3rd Jan
Are your kids old enough to stay up on NYE?

MenopauseSucks · 15/12/2021 20:24

Twelfth Night for me.
I've just put up my decorations.
Normally I don't put any decorations up until Christmas Eve but this year I'm away from Xmas Eve-Boxing Day, am busy this coming weekend so this was the only time I could get the place looking nice!
Feels weird having them up already...

WutheringHeights66 · 15/12/2021 20:40

Day after Boxing Day when all the decs are packed away and I’ve hoovered up. i then like a trip to the sales to buy my crackers for next year and I’m done well before new year ready to start afresh.

OrangeBananaFish · 15/12/2021 20:59

Christmas day night for me personally.

I really enjoy the run up to Christmas. Buying presents, planning activities, watching Christmas cheesy films, Christmas parties (pre-covid).

Christmas day itself is for other people. First the DCs then the parents. I'm also not a fan of a Sunday Roast so the glorified version we have on Christmas day doesn't excite me either.

Once its over I just want life to get back to normal so look forward to the holidays being over. Usually take the tree down 27th.

However, this year we are away over new year (as it stands, obviously covid could change this) so its going to be different and I think better than normal. Can't afford to do it every year though.

Mrsmch123 · 15/12/2021 21:35

All my decorations are down on Boxing Day. Had enough of it by then. Although this year I may leave them up until the 28th as we have family coming with small children who want to see them.

Sleepyteach · 15/12/2021 21:35

I feel a bit sad after Boxing Day, like it’s all over and that’s it till next year. I then start getting anxious, I have literally no idea why but New Year’s Eve makes me really anxious, not the thought of seeing friends or parties or anything like that but the idea of the year ending.

As a kid Christmas lasted until New Year’s Day (although from talking to my mum my perception of this was quite skewed) in my mind, grandparents arrived Christmas Eve and stayed until New Year’s Day and every day was pretty much like another Christmas, with loads of food and festive TV and board games. From talking to my mum they stayed until the 27th and then came back on the 31st, no idea why I thought they all stayed for over a week just eating and drinking when they lived 10 minutes drive away 😂.

Farcry66 · 15/12/2021 21:43

2nd Jan for us, but my partner and I are teachers, so we have the whole break and this is one holiday where we refuse to work at all, so we make the most of the whole two weeks off!!

User4787 · 15/12/2021 21:45

New Year’s Day but personally I find the build up to christmas better then afterwards

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 15/12/2021 22:02

Depressing isn't it?

I work in a 24/7 environment and am lucky to have the 24tj,25th and 26th off but im working 12 hour shifts on 27th, 28th and 29th then 18 hour night shift straight through to the 2nd. All the special colleagues ate already off...

Still decorations etc. are only going up now and staying up until 12th night, here and at work.

bubblebath62636 · 15/12/2021 22:03

Boxing day for me. The tree goes down and the house is deep cleaned.

Inextremis · 15/12/2021 22:07

9th January, the day after DH's birthday - we get an extra week of celebrations every year, it's great :)

stargirl1701 · 15/12/2021 22:24

We are very relaxed over the twelve days of Christmas. DC play with their new toys in the living room, family game under the tree after dinner each evening, Christmas movie in the late afternoon, lots of walks & hot chocs, festive baking, nature trails, visiting friends & family, read together after lunch, poetry tea time, etc. We don't do these things in Advent though.

We take most of the decorations down on Twelfth Night after a roast beef dinner. Light the 3 crowns tea lights. Read some picture books about the journey. Chalk the door lintel. Choose part of the tree to keep for next year to burn on Christmas Day.

We keep the crib scene up until Candlemas. The Book Advent Calendar books stay out until Candlemas. We go wassailing in the community orchard the weekend before Plough Monday.

Both DH & I are off work throughout the school holiday though.

Then it's January and DC need to start learning Burn's poetry for school!

CrispAndFrosty · 15/12/2021 22:42

@stargirl1701 that sounds like the absolute dream.

batmanladybird · 15/12/2021 23:10

I completely agree that twixtmas isn't as lovely as an adult as it was as a child

SleepingStandingUp · 15/12/2021 23:17

Hhm 30th really although the Dec's won't go down until the following weekend. My bday is NYE so that's not Xmas. NYD inwards is just getting back into it all ready for school and work.

People take their Dec's down early cos they've been up since Nov. I don't get it if you've got kids esp, that's the period when you can stay in together, play with their toys, etc. It doesn't feel like a countdown to NY because they're not counting down to school

Joystir59 · 15/12/2021 23:20

30th Dec, tree taken down and house cleaned, ready for the NY. I find remnants of Christmas really depressing.
