When do you get them?

I’m talking crisps, chocolates, nice cheeses & crackers, dips etc etc

I’m worried if I leave it later-eg-23 rd Dec, there won’t be much left and it’ll be packed, but if I go earlier, say next Monday, which gives 5/6 days, we’ll eat it 😅where can you store it all so it keeps fresh but hidden? I have a 3.5 year old who will help herself to anything in the fridge and a greedy Dh

Toddlers are very visual. I just wrap it up in carrier bags and mine doesn't see it as good anymore. Anything that doesn't need fridge or freezer I box up in the garage

Novasmummy · 13/12/2021 23:18

As food*

nanbread · 13/12/2021 23:51

Maybe I'm really controlling but my DC aren't allowed to help themselves to food in the fridge (unless it's eg breakfast time and they're getting milk or butter) and they're much older...

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 14/12/2021 00:08

My non refrigerated bits are hidden in the picnic hamper at the top of a very tall cupboard. The kids couldn't reach even if dc1 stood on a chair with dc2 on his shoulders and dh can't find things right in front of his face.

Got some pate and cheese in the fridge but the kids are only allowed in the fridge if one of us is supervising and it's hidden behind the veg so essentially invisible to dh.

Smoked salmon, cold meats, prawns, pies etc are in the freezer, Prawns at the top. Dh hates prawns which somehow makes him incapable of searching properly.

I’ve currently got two shopping bags of crisps, crackers, biscuits, pop, booze and chocolate in our bedroom.
I’ll probably buy cheese and pate this week.

Rainbows246 · 14/12/2021 06:09

I pick up things for a few weeks only two of us so we don’t need loads. Last ones next week.

Any tips on hiding things from myself gratefully appreciated. I can ban my toddler from the fridge, but me?? Blush

Sayhellociaociao · 14/12/2021 09:47

How do you all ban your toddler from the fridge?! We try so hard, she’s a bugger for yoghurts

I don't know but when mine were small we told them no, it worked.?

Fallagain · 14/12/2021 09:57

You can get magnetic fridge locks. We have one for the cat.

I’ve started getting the longer lasting stuff - chocolates, crackers, crisps, pretzels, drinks - and putting them in a box on top of the kitchen wall cabinets so out of sight. I’ve got a couple of cheeses but they probably won’t last, DP says a block of Wensleydale is two servings 🙄
For the rest of the cheese and fresh stuff I have a click and collect for the 22nd. Most dips definitely wouldn’t last if you bought them now.

Lovemusic33 · 14/12/2021 10:27

I’ve just been to Aldi and stocked up on snacks bits, I don’t plan on doing a big shop next week, have my meat ordered for Christmas so just need to find veg. Been buying bits for the last 2 weeks.

Managed to get big bags of crisps in Aldi (they have Turkey and stuffing flavour balls), some chocolate, mince pies and some pate. Picked up biscuits for cheese last week in tesco and am getting so frozen party food on Friday.

bearlyactive · 14/12/2021 11:14

We've been buying a few odd bits (crisps etc) since they started appearing in the shops and hiding them under the stairs Blush

AuntieMarys · 14/12/2021 11:16

I've had non perishables for 6 weeks and so far they are intact! To be fair I don't get loads and on January 2nd dh takes anything left to work.

Just say no and mean it.
Sunsetsupernova · 14/12/2021 11:27

I went to both Aldi and Sainsbury’s last weekend and couldn’t get pretzels in either! So I think I’m going to buy it all this week in case of any other Christmas staples not being there

TheFairPrincess · 14/12/2021 11:28

We have a stairgate on the kitchen for safety and food stealing reasons :) My 4 year old does try and sneak fruit and yoghurt from the fridge so I feel your pain. He is not allowed though and is told to put it back!!

I am bad, I buy and eat festive food from Mid December. I won't buy chocolates but I will start buying Christmassy themed foods, party bits, and just more treats in general. Our school breaks up a bit earlier than most so the kids are always home from around the 16th and this is just one of the build up things we do :)

Smileatthesmallthings · 14/12/2021 11:30

We add bits to the weekly shop and chuck them in a crate on the top of the cupboards. The crate is down now and all bets are off to be honest; we started digging in when the decorations started going up. I'd rather have a little bit every day for 3 weeks than try and cram all the loveliness into a week, so it's been a mince pie, a couple of quality street or a chunk of gingerbread house for pudding this week!

We had a lock on the fridge, partly coz I was terrified of him finding whole grapes, which meant DS never got in the habit of going in it alone. If he does now (nearly 5) he always asks if he can have something.

TheFairPrincess · 14/12/2021 11:32

We just said “you’re not allowed to open the fridge door” one day and then she never opened the fridge door. Ditto the cupboards and oven door. She wouldn’t dream of walking into the kitchen and helping herself to food because she knows she is not allowed

OP I will just say I wouldn't feel too bad if this is more difficult. My oldest and youngest child wouldn't dream of helping themselves to food without asking and the youngest is only 2! My middle child is 4 and is just very willful. It requires more and very consistent efforts to deter him.

thisplaceisweird · 14/12/2021 11:51

Jesus how tall is she?

Lacedwithgrace · 14/12/2021 12:40

Aldi, Sainsbury's and M&S. I start buying at the beginning of December and fill the pantry with crisps, biscuits, tins of chocs etc. DD doesn't go in there, but any food in the kitchen that needs to be kept away goes in a picnic basket above the fridge freezer. We have some snacks out for her- boxes of raisins, packets of yoghurt covered cranberries etc. She's 7 and has had access to those snacks since she was 4 ish. She helps herself to those and asks if she wants something different.

I8toys · 14/12/2021 12:44

My 16 year old still asks to eat something. Never had the problem tbh. Everyone in the house knows they are not allowed to eat the special foods for christmas. I put it away in the garage, cupboards or upstairs out of the way.
