When do you get them?

I’m talking crisps, chocolates, nice cheeses & crackers, dips etc etc

I’m worried if I leave it later-eg-23 rd Dec, there won’t be much left and it’ll be packed, but if I go earlier, say next Monday, which gives 5/6 days, we’ll eat it 😅where can you store it all so it keeps fresh but hidden? I have a 3.5 year old who will help herself to anything in the fridge and a greedy Dh

We open our hamper on 1st December and have throughout the month. Too much other main food bits around actual Christmas to save it all.

Sayhellociaociao · 14/12/2021 13:12

@thisplaceisweird ? The fridge is on the floor

@TheFairPrincess Thank you 🙏 yes, she’s a strong character and loves the independence of it, but is told no, again and again, but always nips back, I get so annoyed. We need a fridge lock, never seen one of those before.

Apologies for sounding all Super Nanny and I’m not suggesting a time out but if she keeps ignoring you when you say no there needs to be a consequence. If you say no and let them do it anyway you’re undermining your own authority. Our children need to know that no means no else how can we keep them safe? I’m not saying it’s always easy but parenting isn’t a popularity contest.

Passthecake30 · 14/12/2021 13:48

I’ve put the Xmas treats ok a separate shelf in the kitchen. However, my kids (12&13) have a box with their treats in and if they want anything else they generally ask. We’ve eaten a Yule log already but that was my decision BlushGrin

SFisnotsimple · 14/12/2021 14:10

I have older DC (18 & 15) so it's easier

They know what is to be saved. Doesn't stop the endless nagging to start the Quality St 🤣

I've bought all the non perishables and things like cheese I'm getting end of this week or being delivered next.

Tobchette · 14/12/2021 14:53

I've got a fridge opener too op.

Lol at "just telling" a strong willed child no.

Sayhellociaociao · 14/12/2021 14:56

@clartins 👍Yes, quite aware of that. She doesn’t go back once I’ve said no, then and there, but will the next day when I’m in the loo for example. She then gets told no again, but reasons it with she only wanted a little snack. She’ll throw the yoghurt pot in the bin, wash the spoon etc. I don’t like time out. I need a fridge lock

@Tobchette Yep. As if we don’t try hard, different characters, I’m a teacher and am aware of different characters of children. But yes, don’t forget parenting isn’t a popularity contest 👍😂

@Sayhellociaociao Plenty of fridge locks on Amazon etc. They're just like the childproof catches for cupboards. Best to have a look and see what would fit yours best.

I also have a very strong willed DS. He will most definitely push his luck with things, but thankfully the fridge has never been one. We all just try our best!

Squashpocket · 14/12/2021 16:12

I love how parents of children that are capable of processing the concept of 'no' think the rest of us are just pushovers. They should meet my eldest.

I could choose not going in the fridge as the hill I wanted to die on, but to be honest I need to keep something back for the 3000 other battles we have to have about absolutely everything. All day long. Every day of our lives.

Itsnotdeep · 14/12/2021 16:39

My children never raided the fridge or the cupboards at that age I'm afraid so I can't help with the 3 year old.

greedy DH? Once it's it's gone it's gone is my motto. (I now have teens who do raid the kitchen like locusts).

(I'm also not getting my christmas food until Christmas eve,, until then we're just eating normally).

Exactly this. I have a 15 year old that takes food, she has Autism and no control, I have locks on the kitchen door and the fridge. People constantly say “just teach her not to take things” 🤣, like I haven’t already thought of that.

All my Christmas food is locked away in my room until next week 🤣, luckily I only have DD’s and no sneaky dh pinching things.

MrsMiddleMother · 14/12/2021 18:51

We have all of our crisps, chocolates, crackers etc ready just in a basket in the kitchen that are for the 20th onwards, will get cheeses and fridge items next week.
My husband is a grown up so is happy to wait until Christmas as we discuss it and I have a baby gate on the kitchen so my 3 year old can't raid the fridge.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 14/12/2021 21:00

Generally in the garage, out of sight out of mind. Also have a second fridge out there which I tend to use for ingredients for specific dishes. Then in the indoor fridge is all the everyday stuff, milk, butter, salad, cheese etc.

If I need a hiding place, I’m pretty safe in the the salad drawer. That’s my territory! Also boot of the car.

IggyAce · 14/12/2021 21:28

I know someone mentioned sugared almonds and that they were having difficulty finding them. Well I spotted some this morning in my local Poundland.

Borracha · 16/12/2021 10:11

We have a second fridge in the study that is usually just used for drinks but for the last few weeks I’ve been building up a stash of ‘nice’ food. I did have to wrap it all in carrier bags though as my 3 year old must have caught a glimpse of some chocolate coins one day as I found a lot of foil wrappers down the back of a sofa cushion in the playroom Hmm

I have to stop my OH getting in to everything he is now well trained not to go looking for all the treats!

All chutneys and pickles, crackers and cake, crisps/nuts are in plastic boxes in the cellar. Chocolates, treats and all booze and soft drinks are also in the cellar and will be brought out on 23rd. Cheeses are in a box in the fridge - I should maybe have held off on that as he is a total cheese monster!

I've got two deliveries of fresh food coming on Tuesday morning and Wednesday I will go to the supermarket for the stuff that has been missed off my orders.

I do get him weekly mince pies and a tin of chocolates to keep him going until Christmas Eve when the feasting can commence!

MintyCedric · 16/12/2021 20:05

Just me and 17yo DD here.

I have a fabric storage box in the sitting room which gets filled with crap then cleared out as soon as Christmas food starts appearing in the shops.

I stash non-perishables in there from about mid November onwards. Cold and frozen stuff I add some to each shop throughout December.

Fresh stuff coming on 23rd.
