Ive bought my boyfriend aftershave for Christmas. He normally buys the cheap fake version of an expensive well known aftershave and I thought he might like having the real thing for a change. Nice thoughtful gift I thought, as it's something I know he will like and that he wouldn't buy for himself.

Just had a conversation with him where he was telling me his housemate has bought her boyfriend aftershave for Christmas - apparently this is such a boring, cop out present and he's glad I would never get him anything like that. Shit. I'll have to try and return it buy I've now no idea what to buy him as a main present. I got him a nice wiol jumper and a book as well.

He likes sport, especially golf...He doesn't like DIY, cooking or anything like that. He's not massively into his appearance and has sensitive skin/hair so anything like that isn't any good and he's not much of a drinker.

And he buys you travel mugs. And he smells of knock-off aftershave. And he makes shitty comments about gifts before he knows what you've got him.

Sounds lovely, op.

CheesyFootballsAreEvil · 10/12/2021 19:47

He's being well out of order to tell you this now tbh. There's not long left to go and he knows you've got a lot on.

ChangingStates · 10/12/2021 19:49

What about an experience type thing- all done online so no need to traipse round shops

  • tickets to the theatre or a show
  • a restaurant booking or restaurant vouchers
  • exhibition or gallery
  • car driving / hot air ballooning / gliding experience

Or a subscription of some sort- magazine, bacon (yes you can really get a bacon subscription), men's beauty box etc

SunshineCake1 · 10/12/2021 19:50

This is just so ridiculous. He has a lot to say about how crap certain things are. No appreciation for the money spent and effort given. Just complaints and rudeness. Spending another £100 is ridiculous.

I agree. Don't waste your money OP!

The only shit, shit, shit is the boyfriend who needs apologising to.

He's a big baby or a big bully.

Is there a photo that is really special to him? Either of the two of you or of a group of his friends?
You can get it recreated in miniature form. They’re amazing!

My Dad is an avid golfer, things I have bought him include subscription to Golf Monthly (can use Clubcard vouchers if you've got them), he's got a Garmin watch for Golf which has courses programmed in and tells him how good his swing is 🤷‍♂️, there are rangefinders which would be around budget which show how far he hit the ball with the stick, yearly pass to a driving range, lesson with a professional.

This is quite a good price for an entry level golf Garmin if you could stretch it a bit

shinynewapple21 · 10/12/2021 20:03

He sounds like a PITA! Mine is the same - I now only buy him exactly what he's asked for !

AnneLovesGilbert · 10/12/2021 20:06

You’ve got plenty of time to order something online. Excellent ideas from @NoSquirrels

When posters realise their DP is getting them something they don’t want they’re told to drop hints like he’s done, that’s okay, it doesn’t make him a baby Hmm

An expensive gift you don’t want is a waste of money.

Take a breath, order something golf related he’ll like, shoes you’re being thoughtful and it doesn’t have to be pricey.

Good luck with your op and hope your trip goes well.

Omg I love those! Thank you.

MollysMummy2010 · 10/12/2021 20:07

God if he likes golf there is loads of stuff you can get him - I work for a golf company Xmas Wink

I love those! Very cute. It's a bit too late to order anything like that now for this Christmas but I'm keeping that idea for the future.

I’d be exchanging it for a nice perfume I like and then dump his clearly ungrateful arse.

Aderyn21 · 10/12/2021 20:12

How about a nice whisky? Or whatever he drinks.

Lushplease · 10/12/2021 20:14

Does he talk about this housemate a lot?

I'd give him the aftershave and if he acts ungrateful he can rest assured you'll not be buying him anything at all next Christmas as you'll have moved on...

FlamingoYellow · 10/12/2021 20:14

@PieonaBarm I got him a Garmin watch last Christmas unfortunately. He already has a subscription to Golf Monthly or whatever its called and he has a membership to a driving range. He already has a range finder.

@MollysMummy2010 can you recommend something please? I know golf balls and tees are a no go. Struggling to think of anything else.

Are there any places that are sentimental?

Where did you meet? Or where did you have your first date or holiday?

ChiefStockingStuffer · 10/12/2021 20:16

Gift certificate for a round of golf
Golf tees that are personalised ... they must exist

Put the aftershave in a stocking; tell him everyone needs a stocking with something in it.

PieonaBarm · 10/12/2021 20:22

@FlamingoYellow in that case what about these, they go in the top of the club. My Dad has 3, he's asked for another 3 for Christmas.

www.garmin.com/en-GB/p/605172

You could always get him a couple of lessons with a professional - most clubs with a pro shop will have a professional that gives lessons. My dad swears by them.

Also if he's sporty what about a sports massage?

FlamingoYellow · 10/12/2021 20:27

He doesn't really drink.

I honestly think he would be mortified if he knew he'd put his foot in it with this.

He is not the kind of person to spend a lot of money on himself, his golf stuff is the only area where he spends a bit more money on himself (although he is always very generous with me), which is why I thought he might like an upgrade on something he already has and for me to treat him a little bit. I put a lot of thought into it and thought he'd like it. But at least I know now rather than having to watch him feign happiness at getting it on Christmas Day!

OP posts:
Ghoulette · 10/12/2021 20:30

Jesus, is he always this whiny when it comes to gifts? I'd not even bother at the point he made a third complaint about how "shitty" a gift is.

FlamingoYellow · 10/12/2021 20:31

@PieonaBarm those Garmin sensor things are perfect! I'll get him those. Thank you!

And if he doesn't like them I'll return them and buy myself something nice Xmas Wink .
