My annual "Help me find a present for my wife" Mumsnet thread

Carleatspeas · 02/12/2021 09:45

Hi Mumsnet,

For the past five years or so, I've started a similar thread and Mumsnet have helped me finding some great presents for my wife. Highlights have been Cashmere jumpers, Chameau wellies and lots of stuff from Wolf and Badger type stores.

My wife is 44, loves dogs, cheese, travel, make up and all sorts of stuff I don't understand. Who knew that £100 for a tiny pot of something is a good idea?? We live by the coast in Dorset, so are outdoorsy people.

Anyway, I'm looking to you all again for inspiration. She has mentioned two thing this year: Airpods (Done, easy. I learnt the hard way that when a woman says she wants "Apple Airpods" get her Apple Airpods, not the far superior product from another brand).
Also a coat. I'm a bit stumped here as she has said she would really love a Gucci styled long wool one. That's a minefield, but I'm guessing she means something that wouldn't look out of place on the streets of Paris.

I'd really appreciate any ideas. Big or small!

In return for your help, I will answer any questions about male presents you care to give. Some top tips:

  1. No one wants branded shitty merchandise from their football team. A shirt maybe, but not an annual.
  2. Saying that, autobiographies are cool.
  3. Just because I fleetingly mentioned that I might go fishing/ cycling/ rock climbing, does not mean I want an absolute boatload of stuff from Decathlon to achieve this.
  4. We actually really like socks, pants and that sort of thing.
  5. Yes we still like Lego.
  6. Please don't get me a high fashion shirt/ jumper/ T-shirt that I will feel a right tit wearing. There's a reason we only dress in blue, grey, green and black.

Thanks in advance!

That is absolutely lovely.

@dottiedodah

No idea about Coats Im afraid .You mention you live by the sea in Dorset. Snap! I would be pleased with anything with a Coastal theme .Small things /Pictures of local sea/beach .(Hengistbury Head have a lovely shop with lots of little gifts) probably similar Studland etc. Also think drop earrings may go down well . Love scented chocolates ,but poss an acquired taste! (Rose and Violet Creams Waitrose).HTH PS thank you for your tip about guys liking Socks and pants .Always feel I should get something exciting ,but DH/DS seem to like them .Love Lego too ! Maybe this could be a joint pressie for me and DH
Scented chocolates! Madness. I dream of a world where caramel doesn't need to be salted, pork doesn't need to be pulled and chocolates are never scented!

I think she'd rather have a HH beach hut rather than a photo. I'm not that rich though!

Funnily enough I bought her pretty much exactly the same thing a few years back on a recommendation from here. It's a bit tired now so could go another one.

My DH is buying me an Alex Monroe necklace. I have the bee one, I'd really like the conker one but it's a bit toppy for what we usually spend so I've given him a selection of others.

If she likes jewellery, that is.

Years ago DH surprised me with an initial necklace from this jeweller:

It's the one thing I always wear when we go out and I love it so much. That year he really got it right.

VitalsStable · 02/12/2021 14:44

Oooohhh get her the Gucci coat.

dottiedodah · 02/12/2021 15:04

CarlEatsPeas Who can afford one of these huts though? No one in my family likes the scented chocs either!

ShirleyPhallus · 02/12/2021 15:16

My gosh, reading this thread really shows how different we all are.

If someone got me Boots make up and an animal calendar id thank them very politely and put it straight in the pile to donate elsewhere.

The Gucci coat is gorgeous. Buy that, she’ll love it

Going off on a tangent, I have read that Apple Tags can be used for 'bad' I e tracking people secretly. Could someone explain please.

timeforanewlife · 03/12/2021 04:47

You are an amazing husband thinking of her Christmas gift. That might be one of the most expensive gifts but Welsh gold and beautiful design is all worth it www.clogau.co.uk/jewellery/item/am-byth-ring-18etolr3

Ok question: What to get a husband that is a computer geek? He doesn't want anything. I always struggle to find something that he likes.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 03/12/2021 05:14

@TheMirrorReflects

Aw, then get her the Gucci coat and throw in a winter weekend in Paris so she can wear it 😀 Or better still, take her to Paris to buy the coat. (Obviously, I'm very good at spending other people's money). You sound great Op.
Great idea . And pop into Hermes to buggy a bag and scarf to go with it .
isthismylifenow · 03/12/2021 05:14

Gucci coat gets my vote.

You sound great OP.

I don't know how I missed your threads every other year.

I have this issue with my dd 22. In the past I have bought him all the d&d books and the dice (or is that die). A graphics card 🙈. Etc etc He's getting Ray ban sunglasses this year as I've run out of geek gift ideas Smile. Oh he does love a Steam voucher though.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 03/12/2021 05:14

*buggy! buy

isthismylifenow · 03/12/2021 05:15

Mine should say DS age 22

Thermosplat · 03/12/2021 06:01

If you can stretch to the Gucci coat it's absolutely amazing, and it'll last forever.

Ok question: What to get a husband that is a computer geek? He doesn't want anything. I always struggle to find something that he likes

When you say computer geek...does he like gaming or is he into coding etc? I'd avoid anything actually conputery as I'm sure he knows what kit he wants etc.

Imissmoominmama · 03/12/2021 09:24

Rose and violet creams are my absolute favourite!

timeforanewlife · 03/12/2021 09:39

@Thermosplat I mean both, but I agree he knows exactly what he wants regarding computers but he would not see it as a gift 🎁. He buys things as he needs them.

Cattipuss · 03/12/2021 09:43

@timeforanewlife my DH is the same! He always makes a lot of effort with my presents but he doesn't ever really need anything and is also very into computing. Does he/you like board games? I actually got him Turin Tumble for his birthday, although it was developed to help children learn, he loves it and has had great fun coming up with his own. Unlock games as well which have codes to solve etc we enjoy playing.

I have this on my Christmas list.. fab for out and about dog walking ( although if I am lucky enough to receive one it will be mostly used campervanning. .. )

Amalfa · 03/12/2021 10:11

Maybe a Stojo collapsible coffee cup? It’s great for taking out when you do outdoorsy things, then it squashes flat so you can put it in your pocket.

timeforanewlife · 03/12/2021 10:27

@Cattipuss I was thinking about Turin Tumble but is that advanced enough. He loves board games and his profession is programmer (a very good one apparently) but I was worried it would be too easy for him. Is that something that he could play with our 3 year old?
