Christmas lunch with no oven...

penguinwithasuitcase · 27/11/2021 08:29

DP and I live separately, and while last year we had Christmas at my house, this year he's said he and DSS would like to do it at their flat.

(it's smaller and not as comfortable as my place, but they're perfectly entitled to a Christmas at theirs so I'm keeping my trap shut Grin )

Only thing that's niggling me is that they don't have an oven, so I'm trying to plan ahead and think about what we can do for Christmas lunch that requires only a stovetop....?

Any ideas?

How far between you? I would be cooking some favourites in my oven and taking them over if it was nearby. Meat can be reheated in a pan in gravy. I’d streamline the veg.

If not, probably a casserole with Christmassy veg in it and dumplings on the top.

PurpleDaisies · 27/11/2021 08:34

What’s your dp’s plan about food? If he’s hosting, he should be thinking about it…

NightmareSlashDelightful · 27/11/2021 08:34

This one’s got ‘pub’ all over it tbh Grin

herecomesthsun · 27/11/2021 08:35

Smoked salmon, plate of fruits de mer, champagne?

You can do a Xmas pud in the microwave if you want one.

Or you could roast a joint of beef and take it to them "rested" on the journey?

Paella?

Order in a curry?

drunkensailorette · 27/11/2021 08:36

Well if he's doing it at his, the catering isn't yours your worry about is it?

Clymene · 27/11/2021 08:36

Why are you worrying about it if he's said he wants to host? Surely it's his problem to resolve? Confused

And don't be making all the food and carting it over. Double the work for no reason.

Why doesn't he have an oven?

Agree. He’s presumably thought about this otherwise he wouldn’t have offered.

It’s his/their problem, all you need to do is turn up and start drinking.

MeanMrMustardSeed · 27/11/2021 08:36

Chicken in a slow cooker?

Ilikewinter · 27/11/2021 08:37

Im more interested in why he doesn't have an oven!

I love this!

Gammon, mashed potatoes, sauteed carrots, braised cabbage. Christmas pudding in microwave

Driposaurus · 27/11/2021 08:39

Well I’d assume he’s sorting it out.

But I’d do gammon in a slow cooker abs mashed potatoes. Or something nine Christmassy like paella or risotto.

Unsureschool · 27/11/2021 08:40

Also is there a broken oven and if so have they reset the timer?

friedeggandsauce · 27/11/2021 08:41

What time are you going over? I take my turkey out of the over for 2 hours to rest with foil and loads of blankets- it stays really hot so you could take it with you!

SillyLittleBiscuit · 27/11/2021 08:44

Who insists on hosting with no oven?! I agree it’s on him to think of a menu.

DirtyDancing · 27/11/2021 08:44

Cook and take it over. We did it for years with my elderly Grandparents. Cover in foil, and lots of tea towels and towels. It's a slog and you have to dish up as soon as you get there but as I say we did it for years. Plates quick 5 min blast in the microwave

Nameswaptime · 27/11/2021 08:45

We cook chicken or turkey in the slow cooker for Christmas dinner.

Why would the OP cook the dinner if she's been invited to someone else's house?

Is it because she has a vagina?

kowari · 27/11/2021 08:48

Well if he doesn't have an oven I'm sure he is used to cooking without one! I rarely use mine.

Why are you doing the planning?

He's the host.

WhatonEarth1 · 27/11/2021 08:52

You could do this recipe. I did it a couple of years back and replaced half of the carrots with parsnips and added some bacon lardons. I made paxo stuffing mix in the microwave and bread sauce on the hob.
Or you could reheat cold cuts of turkey in the microwave www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/how-to-reheat-turkey-and-keep-it-moist

Somebodylikeyew · 27/11/2021 08:52

I agree it’s his problem to sort. My suggestions would be:

One of those already cooked whole chickens you can heat in its bag in the microwave (does he have one of those??)

Mashed potatoes
Carrots boiled on hob and then drizzled with honey and sprinkled with a little salt
Green veg on hob
Red cabbage- ready made, reheated in hob
Gravy

Christmas pudding is steamed on hob anyway, or some sort of yule log/gateau thing.

Sprogonthetyne · 27/11/2021 08:52

Beef joints come out well in a slow cooker, if you have a plug timer (or fancier slow cooker) you can set it to come on early hours of the morning.

GiltEdges · 27/11/2021 08:54

Yeh... bit like PPs I'm struggling to see why you need to find the solution for this. If he's so insistent on having it at his flat, then what's his suggestion for cooking Christmas lunch?
