Christmas lunch with no oven...

penguinwithasuitcase · 27/11/2021 08:29

DP and I live separately, and while last year we had Christmas at my house, this year he's said he and DSS would like to do it at their flat.

(it's smaller and not as comfortable as my place, but they're perfectly entitled to a Christmas at theirs so I'm keeping my trap shut Grin )

Only thing that's niggling me is that they don't have an oven, so I'm trying to plan ahead and think about what we can do for Christmas lunch that requires only a stovetop....?

Any ideas?

Why are you the one who’s planning ahead? Why wouldn’t you just ask what he’s planning to serve?

Also I wouldn’t go unless his plan included going out for a decent Christmas lunch.

femfemlicious · 27/11/2021 08:57

Tell him to get an airfryer...they are pretty cheap

FinallyHere · 27/11/2021 08:59

@PurpleDaisies

What’s your dp’s plan about food? If he’s hosting, he should be thinking about it…
This ^

Every time, exactly this. Why are you assuming that you have to do the cooking?

wildseas · 27/11/2021 09:00

Who planned the meal at your house last year? If the answer is you then its clearly down to him this year!

LiterallyKnowsBest · 27/11/2021 09:01

Joining the chorus.

Your partner is hosting Christmas Day.

He is presumably an adult. It is his responsibility to make the mental effort, shop for and prepare the food. Or to book and pay for Christmas lunch at a restaurant.

Take their presents. Take some mince pies. Take champagne.

Have a lovely day.

AuntyFungal · 27/11/2021 09:03

The only thought I’d put into this is to organise something delicious for you at your house, in case his goes tits up.

Turn up. Drink. If worse case happens - go home and eat.

They’re grown ups - leave them to it.

totallybored · 27/11/2021 09:03

Buy an air fryer

neededafart · 27/11/2021 09:04

How do they get buy day to say with no oven ?

I think pub lunch is the best option. Will it just be the 3 of you ?

languagelover96 · 27/11/2021 09:11

Sausage rolls
Fruit and cheese platters
Roast chicken and ham
Pigs in blankets
Soup

I once spent a Christmas in China and a full, traditional Christmas dinner was served from a microwave and two woks! God knows how she did it as the kitchen was tiny and I stayed out the way getting pissed, but it was amazing 🤣 it can be done!

Exhausteddog · 27/11/2021 09:12

We've cooked a turkey on a (gas) BBQ before, if he has one (although obvs would also depend whether the flat had a garden and how accessible it was)
Or buy DP an early Xmas present of a table top oven? and then he can cook a greater variety of food for you going forward

Oftenithinkaboutit · 27/11/2021 09:18

How old is his dss?

Oftenithinkaboutit · 27/11/2021 09:18

I’m intrigued that he doesn’t have an oven

Immaculatemisconception · 27/11/2021 09:19

Relax, leave him to it.

LiterallyKnowsBest · 27/11/2021 09:22

Is there a (good) reason why he is bringing up his son with no access to an oven?

Also curious about age of said son, whether toddler or university student …

DahliaMacNamara · 27/11/2021 09:24

Buy him a mini oven as his Christmas present. Then you won't have to think about it.

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 27/11/2021 09:24

Has he even thought about Christmas lunch? Is he a planner? At this point I would just be asking him how he is planning to make lunch just using a hob and possibly a microwave. Not doing it for him.

I cook almost everything on the stove top. An oven is hardly a necessity.
MargosKaftan · 27/11/2021 09:28

Agree with the many other posters- his flat, his decision to host, his job to plan the menu and do the shopping/prep. You at most help on the day, the thinking and planning and the bulk of the work is down to him. If he is planning on eating out though,do point out tables need to be booked soon!

PurpleDaisies · 27/11/2021 09:29

Confused Not having an oven is an inconvenience. Not a necessity.

Oftenithinkaboutit · 27/11/2021 09:29

@kowari

Do you have children?

Accidentgirlfriend · 27/11/2021 09:30

Get him a ninja oven for Xmas
ninjakitchen.co.uk/product/ninja-foodi-8-in-1-flip-mini-oven-sp101uk-zidSP101UK?gclid=Cj0KCQiAy4eNBhCaARIsAFDVtI1EY6mQG1YLscZ90QQx9Dafd9bC_2IzkIeIuf1rKZe6iU2HPGU6EPMaAhQbEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

Or Argos do a mini oven in their cook works range , maybe encourage him to get one if you don’t want to buy one for Xmas .

We’ll have to agree to disagree.

What on earth has that got to go with anything?

How is having an oven absolutely necessary for providing a heathy diet?

I mostly use my oven for chips.
