Here's our new thread!

I'm having such problems with the site, please could someone post a link to the old thread for me?
@Plantsandpuddlesuits it definitely counts! Sounds like a perfect drink for the weekend before Christmas
Indeed! M and s of course. (We do our weekly shop there)

Dillidilly · 18/12/2021 21:21

If we escape a lockdown, my daughter is hoping to get here after Christmas, post-Covis situation allowing. We are planning on making Nigel's panatonne bread and butter pudding ❤

So sorry I've not been on the thread for a couple of weeks; December has been so much busier than expected. Just got home and realised that today was supposed to by Apricot Substance Abuse day, but it's half an hour past midnight and it's Too Late.

I must go to bed soon, but have poured a small glass anyway. It is an incredible flavour; so warming! And, at least at this time of day, the house is quiet and restful; I've lit a candle to keep me company for the last few minutes of the day.

Best of Pre-Christmas wishes to everyone on this thread, especially to those having a hard time at the moment Flowers

Dillidilly · 19/12/2021 11:33

I think we will also try today's Roasted Cauliflower and Carrot Hummus, it sounds and looks delicious. Nigel eats his warm. A lovely lunch with some interesting bread?

I have made the almond paste and covered my Christmas cake. I have been making my own marzipan for Christmas cakes for a while now. Can’t compare the taste of actual almonds to the flavour of artificial essence.

Usually my cake would be decorated and half eaten by now….

Rhubarbarelle · 19/12/2021 18:46

Hello everyone, very late to the party! I read the first few pages of the first thread and decided I had to find a bargain copy of the book (felt like a challenge to myself- you lot had clearly scoured the net and cleared all the bargains away (Grin). Went into a branch of WH Smith last week and found it on shelf for £9, just as you’d said! Tucking up with some Christmas treats and catching up with the book and the thread now, hooray!

This sounds lovely, I love marzipan.

My older children have actually made our Christmas cake this year!

Ha ha, I’m late for everything so no exception here. Maybe I’m just being uber prepared for next Christmas?! I’ve made my wreath already, so I’m a day ahead already Grin

I have a few days off work now, so time to really wind down and get into the Christmas spirit (and catch up with Nigel!).

footchewer · 21/12/2021 13:29

Trying to finish up work here too, getting there...

Today we're having a nigelesque lunch; Bockwurst with Sauerkraut and potato dumplings (cheating, using pre-made mix from a German deli). And I'll be having one of my Aldi Lebkuchen for dessert.

I've been enjoying a little glass of the Apricot Substance before bed, but it is incredibly sweet, and I do agree somewhat with PP that the anise needs toning down a little. I may change the ratio of sugar and white wine next year to get something a bit more piquant.

The house is all decorated now (struggling to find lametta for the tree though). MiL arrives to stay for Christmas tomorrow. I'm still on Pannetone chapter with Nigel, will try and catch up this evening.

ExquisitelyDecorated · 21/12/2021 13:39

I've just finished Pannetone too, I had a really busy week a couple of weeks ago them came down with a chesty cough (not Covid but has quenched my Christmas spirit).

Anyway, I just spotted a ball of mistletoe much lower in a tree than usual and thought of you all and Nigel

Finally sitting down and having a catch up with you all. I won't tell you where I'm at with Nigel as it's weeks ago, end of term resolutely getting in the way. How is it that every year it's the end of November and "a bit soon" for stuff, then suddenly it's 3 days before Christmas and I'll never get everything done!
@Strawberryfield12, I went through years of making chutney every year because it seemed such a Christmas thing to do! Now I've embraced the fact that none of us like any chutney other than Branston. Xmas Grin

We finished off the apricot booze the other Sunday and I immediately put another load on, minus the star anise. Also quadrupled quantities as Nigel's recipe produced a couple of tiny glassfuls and some fat swollen boozy apricots, which I suppose I could have squished like a teabag to extract more booze....

@HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule, love your paperwhites. Mine are still 3 inch green shoots. Am pretending they are supposed to be like that in order to cheer up January. Hmmm.

@Plantsandpuddlesuits, I first bought my copy in December, but read it in the Christmas holidays. It adds to one of my favourite Christmasses of recent years, doing nothing much at all, but taking hot baths every afternoon with Nigel. In the nicest possible way! So sorry about your cancelled service. Flowers Hope you manage to find some solace in other things. I'm not religious at all but I do love church services at special times, and carols make me cry (in a good way) The Church itself fascinates me and I'm proud to have an ex student who I first met when he was 14 in quite an important role in the Vatican.

We are crossing fingers and toes that the Italian govt isn't going to shut us down over Christmas. They are holding fire until Thursday and as Friday is the 24th when all the most important celebrations both in homes and in churches and on the streets happen, I think we'll be OK. But am fully expecting some more restrictions immediately after Christmas. DD wants to go up north for 3 days with her friends who have already booked, but I told her I'm waiting till a couple of days beforehand to book as I'm not risking losing more travel money after the numerous cancelled flights etc over the last 20 months.

Anyway, school finished for me today, just kids' assembly tomorrow. Am making own almond paste after as couldn't get hold of any marzipan so bought a kilo of ground almonds (good! says Nige) from Amazon (bad! says Nige) Am also going back to homemade royal icing as have urge for peaks on my cake and not smooth fondant.

Solstice tomorrow- English Heritage are streaming sunrise at Stonehenge on their YT channel and hopefully sunset too. Will be sitting and watching like last year as nothing very much except the most incredible thing happens. So peaceful just watching the light and the birds flitting around the stones. Very comforting.

Dillidilly · 21/12/2021 22:31

@Geamhradh, the Winter Solstice is today!

Yes, sorry, I mean the sunrise marking the end of the longest night, which is tomorrow morning. www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/stonehenge/things-to-do/solstice/winter-solstice-2021-lander/

footchewer · 22/12/2021 11:38

Grr Covid booster has knocked me for six. I'm not going to manage any posh cookery today. Hopefully I'll come up shining tomorrow!

Love the idea of a daily bath-and-book ritual at Christmas, and it's comforting to know the nights are getting shorter now!

GoGoGretaDoll · 23/12/2021 15:45

OMG just read the Christmas cake chapter when he was talking about decorating the cake with his mum (21 Dec) and appear to have something in my eye. Poor little lad.

Plantsandpuddlesuits · 23/12/2021 16:08

A gardener / forager / herbalist i watch on YouTube often does seasonal book recommendations and one of December's was this book, yay!!

Plantsandpuddlesuits · 23/12/2021 20:05

Yay just found out that my church is open for private prayer tomorrow just for an hour so hopefully I will manage to find the time to go and sit quietly for a little while

Rhubarbarelle · 23/12/2021 23:53

@Plantsandpuddlesuits Hope you do find the time to enjoy some peaceful reflection tomorrow, enjoy.

What is the name of the gardener/forager please? Sounds like something I might enjoy watching too.

Thank you @Dillidilly for keeping us with you on this lovely thread. It has been comforting to read. I have also really enjoyed listening to Nigel on his Podcast as he narrates the book. This thread & Nigel’s writing has made me really appreciate the colder weather & being outdoors.
Thank you all for this wonderful & warm mini community - you have been bright winter sunshine in a somewhat grey few weeks.

I'm also really grateful for this thread can we keep it going into the new year?

I've also been enjoying the podcast and find it very soothing although I'm deaf so have to concentrate hard to pick out the words but I'm enjoying it nonetheless

I managed to rise before everyone this morning which is a rare pleasure so had a lovely hour on the couch with a blanket, teapot of.spiced chai and Nigel. I love today's reading about leaving a candle burny, love the symbolism of the light as we are Christians. I don't think I'm confident to leave a candle overnight but will certainly do it this evening and tomorrow morning

Listening to Kings College choir on the radio and contemplating Christmas baking.
