We are not close but she is the mother of my partner and I would like to get her something nice. She is interested in knitting, sweet foods, no candles/ smellies etc.
A hamper perhaps?

Nice framed photo of partner?

crochetmonkey74 · 18/11/2021 09:51

I had a much loved elderly relative in this position and every year I would get him lovely stuff to eat from our local deli- every year I would ask him if it was boring and would he like something else- but he said he loved having all the stuff he wouldn't normally choose himself- fancy biscuits, nuts, crisps, gentlemens relish , crackers etc lovely cheese and pate.

Some beautifully decorated treats, like www.biscuiteers.com/christmas-shop or something from Betty’s might work.

Heated slippers
Fluffy neck hot water bottle
Nice comfy fluffy blanket
Writing stationery
Scarf

claymodels · 18/11/2021 09:57

Local history book?

Newdad19 · 18/11/2021 09:58

A heated blanket

Volterra · 18/11/2021 09:59

Has she got a nice bag to keep her knitting projects in ?

namechangemark3 · 18/11/2021 10:01

My in laws - she's 92 and he's about 82. They are still active etc, but frankly do not want any more stuff. They love their garden but are unable to devote a lot of energy to it. I noticed she always had flowers when we visit and I know they host a few family members at Christmas, so the last couple of years I've sent them a lovely Christmas floral arrangement on December 23. My husband has passed away otherwise he would be in charge of their gift which would have been books.

A bone china mug with a family photo? I have bought one previously from Etsy.

Or a special bowl to keep wool in when knitting that the wool spoils out of. Not sure what these are called!

PeterPomegranate · 18/11/2021 10:08

Spools

Amdone123 · 18/11/2021 10:09

Time.
A visit where you can ( all 3) sit and chat, eat and drink something Christmassy, listen to Xmas music. Reminisce, maybe look at family photos etc.

PeterPomegranate · 18/11/2021 10:09

Something like this

Toastytoads · 18/11/2021 10:10

Cashmere gloves and socks

ssd · 18/11/2021 10:11

Yes, time. And a nice bunch of m&s xmas flowers.

Things that have worked for us:
Deliveries from Bettys - some of the cakes are freezable so can be sliced and frozen, the fondant fancies are EPIC, also the tea is very nice and comes in a lovely tin
Long necklace that slips over the head as she finds clasps hard (eyesight/fingers not as nimble as they were) - similarly, elasticated bracelets that slip over the hand eg www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-partners-freshwater-pearl-and-crystal-stretch-bracelet-silver-white/p3943667?sku=237863090&s_ppc=2dx92700064000322711&tmad=c&tmcampid=2&gclid=Cj0KCQiAkNiMBhCxARIsAIDDKNWBO8kxZ2d3f4Rt_aF5wZ_vtUVddGJiaYqsEo74fMLG64UMcp7HxlwaAoPJEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds
Photo book (I stole some of her old photos to make it up)
Fancy chocolates and biscuits (Hotel Chocolat biscuits of the gods are a double whammy)
Bird feeder that sticks on the window (possibly the most popular gift ever and keeps giving)
Christmas floral arrangement suggested upthread is a great idea

PrincessConsuela12 · 18/11/2021 10:23

I'm getting my (80 year old) Nan some slippers, some wool for her knitting & marshmallows. She has everything & so hard to buy for so I'm hoping she likes these

JumperandJacket · 18/11/2021 10:39

I was also going to suggest Biscuiteers- their biscuits are not cheap but they are absolutely beautiful.

namechangemark3 · 18/11/2021 11:25

Super ideas thanks.!
I'm looking at knitting bags and bowls.
What would you think of a framed hoot of
My partner and his kids and another one of the lady in question with her husband, partners dad and their grandson... youngest child of
My Partner?

@namechangemark3, the photos are a lovely idea.

KosherDill · 18/11/2021 12:18

The bird feeder is a great idea.

Palavah · 18/11/2021 12:20

Time, time, time, flowers, and something luxurious like a cashmere cardigan or socks or slippers.

ElephantOfRisk · 18/11/2021 12:24

Exactly what I was going to say. If they are mobile then take them out for lunch. My DM particularly loved being taken for a proper fish tea and a sit in chip shop. Fish and chips with bread and butter and a pot of tea :)

If they are not mobile then get a takeaway or make a nice dinner, watch a movie or something and/or just sit and chat.
