I know she’d read all of the David Walliams books.
I want to get a her a book for Christmas.
If anyone has any suggestions I’d be thankful

The Secret series by Pseudonymous Bosch. My daughter loves them!

ProfessionalTeaDrinker · 10/11/2021 06:39

My son and his friends have enjoyed the Tom Fletcher books. There's also a Christmas one.

ElfDragon · 10/11/2021 06:41

The new David Baddiel book?

Tilly and the Book Wanderers?

The Land of Neverendings - my dd loved this but said it was very sad.

Any of the Lauren St John series (White giraffe, etc)

Justonemorecup81 · 10/11/2021 06:41

My daughter is loving the murder most unladylike series and also liked The Umbrella Mouse. We all love the Tom Fletcher books too, so second the above

Depending on her relationship to you, trip out for coffee/hot choc and visit to a book shop so she can choose.

CoffeeChocolateWine · 10/11/2021 09:21

My 9yo has really enjoyed the Unmapped Chronicles series by Abi Elphinstone recently. Also the Pages and Co books, Emily Windsnap, Lottie Brooks, Katherine Rundell books and Ben Miller books.

She’s asked for lots of books for Christmas so she’s getting The Christmas Pig (JK Rowling’s new one), Tinsel, Diary of a Christmas Elf, Crackle Dawn Dragon, Rainbow Grey and the Wolf Wilder.

Thank you everyone- lovely ideas

Really good books for 9 year olds are: The Hatmakers (Tamsin Merchant), Haunting of Aveline Jones, Shark Caller and The train to impossible places :)

UndertheCedartree · 10/11/2021 22:15

Charlotte's Web
Anne of Green Gables
Tom's Midnight Garden
The London Eye Mystery
Murder Most Unladylike

Gingersay · 10/11/2021 22:22

My dd9 loves the extremely embarrassing life of Lottie Brookes and the Amazing Edie Eckhart, I love listening to her laughing away to herself reading them.

ChickenSchnitzel · 10/11/2021 22:32

Another vote for Murder Most Unladylike
13 Storey Treehouse Series
The School for Good and Evil series
The Bolds
Ruby Redfort
Lottie Brooks
My DD loved Dork Diaries at that age

Christmas books:
Winter Magic by Abi Elphinstone
A Boy Called Christmas by Matt Haig (and subsequent books)

NarcissistsEyebrows · 10/11/2021 22:33

Big Harry Potter fan here, huge bookworm too.

Lived Keeper of the Lost Cities series (up to book 5 so far)

Also Dragon Mountain / City / Real series

Also Wizards of Once

And something about Wizard in my Shed?

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 10/11/2021 22:35

My DDs current favourite is the Adventures on Trains series (starts with Highland Falcon Thief)
Before that it was the Roman Mysteries series and Witch Switch series.

Sparklespangle · 10/11/2021 22:38

How to train your dragon series

Terry Pratchett discworld stuff

Hitchhikers guide

evtheria · 10/11/2021 23:39

So many great recommendations here, so I’ll try not to repeat any:

  • Alanna: The First Adventure (Tamora Pierce)
  • The Babysitters Club (Ann M. Martin)
  • Harriet the Spy (Louise Fitzhugh)
  • Ruby Redfort (Lauren Child)
  • Robot Girl (Malorie Blackman)

But above all these, if possible, take her to the bookstore to peruse for an hour or two and pick her own...

Pepperama · 10/11/2021 23:53

Mine likes

Adventures on trains series
Dragon Mountain series
Lauren St John Laura Marlin series
Nevermore Series

BookShark · 11/11/2021 00:10

Rick Riordan - DS loved them and still goes back to them as a comfort read. Plus has the the advantage of being a series, so if she's likes one, you've got plenty to follow!

And slightly different, but worth looking at Asterix and Tintin. Some might go over her head, but DS started reading them at her age. And also Lord of the Rings, but I can't stand it so won't recommend it!

Stompythedinosaur · 11/11/2021 11:22

Some books my dd has enjoyed:

The House With Chicken Feet
A Girl Called Owl
Wolf Brother
The Wild Robot
Ronia the Robber's Daughter
Tracey Beaker

Goldenphoenix · 11/11/2021 11:52

I too have a bookworm nine year old. She likes A Pinch of Magic series, Harry Potter, Alex Ryder books, Roald Dahl's, Jacqueline Wilson

Burgerqueenbee · 11/11/2021 12:07

I would recommend the Howl's Moving Castle trilogy by Diana Wynne Jones, I read them as an adult but they would be suitable for a 9 year old (they are children's books).

foxgoosefinch · 11/11/2021 12:13

Second Diana Wynne Jones, above, but I’d put her at about 8-9 years rather than 6.

The Works currently has a nice box set of classics for around that age - including The Railway Children, The Secret Garden etc.

Other more recent classics for that age that she’s unlikely to have include:

Noel Streatfeild, the Ballet Shoes and White Boots books;
Eve Garnett, The Family from One End Street
Barbara Sleigh, the Carbonel series

But all these may well be more suited to 8+ than 6, depending on what her current reading level is.

foxgoosefinch · 11/11/2021 12:14

Oh no sorry wrong thread! I’m simultaneously commenting on one for a six y o girl. In that case ignore my age stipulations! And I would add:

Moondial
Tom’s Midnight Garden
Anne of Green Gables

I love these, even though I'm not a child. Maurice and his amazing educated rodents is my favourite. My children liked the Jonny books

The Frostheart books are good and Agatha Oddly has gone down well here too.
