I know she’d read all of the David Walliams books.
I want to get a her a book for Christmas.
If anyone has any suggestions I’d be thankful

The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster is great for that age group.

Any of Eva Ibbotsons books for younger readers would be nice. Journey to the river sea is lovely. It is set in the Amazon in Victorian times.

Onjali Rauf has some lovely books. There’s a boy at the back of the class. The lion above the door.

Some classics might go down well. A little princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett was one of my favourites when I was her age. I also loved Little Women.

Wings of Fire is a great series for this age (bonus there are loads in the series)

Keeper of Lost Cities

All Rick Riordan

My daughter has just finished all of Kieran Larwood’s books (there’s six so far) and she’s absolutely loved them. If she likes fantasy I think she’d love these. The first one is called ‘Podkin one ear’. She’s also enjoying The Story Girl books which I’m reading to her (by the same author as Anne of Green Gables). I first read the Alana books when I was about 12 but if a pp thinks they’re suitable for a 9 year old I might start my daughter on them next!

Ethelfromnumber73 · 11/11/2021 21:45

Mine is loving 'Kat Wolfe investigates' - there's a series of three

stayathomer · 11/11/2021 21:46

Hannah sparks - she's got a series witha talking dragon and a penguin and my kids are still talking about it a year later! Also the dog man/cat kid books, or captain underpants. Hope she finds something she loves!!!

Maharajah20 · 11/11/2021 21:54

The Roman Mysteries box set
Malory Towers
Tracy Beaker
Michael Morpurgo collection

ohbygolly · 11/11/2021 21:56

My DS loved reading these during lockdown when he was the same age...

I, Houdini by Lynne Reid Banks
The Witches Vacuum Cleaner and Other Stories by Terry Pratchett
The Iron Man by Ted Hughes
The Giggler Treatment by Roddy Doyle

meganorks · 11/11/2021 21:56

My DD is 10 and has just read Enola Holmes and has asked for more.

IIRC there is a bit of adult content in the Alanna books - she gets her period in book 1 (which should be no problem for some 9 year olds but you might want to vet it first); but there’s some sex in the second and subsequent books if I remember correctly.

The Christmasaurus by Tom Fletcher. Amazing, clever, magical story.

OdeToAutumn · 12/11/2021 00:04

Tom gates
The bad guys is really good and there’s a few of them in the series

When we read it together when son was about that age I laughed so much I thought that I would need an ambulance. Son read it again by himself, then again a few more times. It's brilliant.

Notaroadrunner · 12/11/2021 10:27

Upside Down Magic - Ds loved them. There are 8 in total so someone else could get her some too.

Courtier · 12/11/2021 13:07

The Lioness series by Tamika Pierce! I read it at that age and devoured them. It's fantasy and has some interesting themes but very clean int erm of no sex etc

Courtier · 12/11/2021 13:08

Tamora* not Tamika

80sMum · 12/11/2021 13:15

My granddaughter (aged 10) loved
The Girl Who Speaks Bear

As I said upthread there’s definitely sex in these after book 1! It’s not described in detail but it’s definitely in there. Alanna sleeps with several of the main male characters in books 2-4. I probably wouldn’t give them to a 9 y o, though I wouldn’t think them unsuitable for 12 and up. Just 9 maybe too young.
Danikm151 · 12/11/2021 13:26

The worst with series.
Chronicles of Narnia
Jacqueline wilson books

All good for a 9 year old

HerbivorousRex · 12/11/2021 15:55

‘The Adventurers’ series by Jenna Hatt. I got the first in the series for one of the children who came to our wedding and she’s requested the rest of the series for Christmas.

evtheria · 12/11/2021 17:22

@foxgoosefinch Yes, I seem to remember later on Alanna doing something with her love interests, definitely figured out what even though I was young! I only recommend the first book to be safe.

foxgoosefinch · 12/11/2021 18:07

@evtheria Yes I think she has sex/relationships with at least three of the main male characters in books 2-4 - Prince Jonathan, George and Liam! I remember being quite shocked by this even around 13/14-ish Grin

This is a great book we are reading at the moment. Age 9 would be a perfect age for reading alone and understanding.
