Any idea what they read and enjoy today?

GoBrookeYourself · 25/10/2021 00:51

How about the new JK Rowling one? It has v good reviews- it’s called the Christmas pig

1stTimeMama · 25/10/2021 00:57

My daughter is 12 and a voracious reader. Her books vary hugely from Disney Twisted Takes, Michael Morpurgo and Harry Potter to murder mysteries, massive Alison Weir historical times and info books about inspirational women. What kind of thing do they like? My 7 and 8yr olds like Percy Jackson, Bear Grylls Adventures, and Time Hunters.

Ricekrispie22 · 25/10/2021 06:50

My 9yo isn’t a great reader but likes Where’s Wally and the Guinness World Record book

thunderandsunshine01 · 25/10/2021 07:02

My 9yo DD asked for some non fiction books for her birthday. Namely about dinosaurs/fossils and the deep ocean facts.

She really enjoys some Jacqueline Wilson books (that I used to own!) double act and the Tracy beaker story are the current reads.

I’m thinking about getting her the Harry Potter collection for Xmas now that her reading is coming along a bit more. She’s seen the first couple of films and it’s the trendy thing at school at the moment with all the merchandise currently in primark and everywhere, so hoping it’s peaked her interest.

I'm a bit stuck for books for this Christmas but in the past my DD 11 who likes reading has been given box sets of Ruby Redfort, Geek Girl, Jane Austen, Harry Potter, Nancy Drew, Anne of Green Gables, Divergent and Maze Runner and enjoyed them all. My DS nearly 9 doesn't enjoy reading so finding it hard to choose books he wants to read for school.

They are more difficult ages to buy a random book for, my dds are 13 and 9 and have very definite tastes.

Dd1 is into horror so likes Darren shan, five nights at freddys and is just starting the mortal instruments (after watching shadow hunters on Netflix).

Dd2 likes Harry potter, classic stories like Enid Blyton, wind and the willows. But still adores a picture book or dr suess.

Both enjoy silly books like jokes/riddles/would you rather question books/Ripley believe it or not/guineas world records or an annual.

If you wanted a story book though I would suggest Philip pullman his dark materials. The first in the trilogy is Northern lights. Would be good for both ages.

MissyB1 · 25/10/2021 08:21

Michael Morpurgo books
Alex Rider series

CrackerGal · 25/10/2021 08:25

If the 9 year old is a girl how about the dork diaries or the babysitters club?

Hosum · 25/10/2021 08:26

11 year old DD - slightly different tastes (by 12 it is difficult to do generic) - she loves Holly Smale geek girl and Valentine series but also the red eye collection (including frozen Charlotte which started off the craze for them), Kathryn fox field series, graphic novels likes babysitters club (would work for both), coraline, miss peregrine series - for Xmas she is getting hard copies of Persepolis as her paperback has fallen apart.

CrackerGal · 25/10/2021 08:26

I have a daughter the same age.

CrackerGal · 25/10/2021 08:28

At 12 I remember another child being super into Patrick Ness. One book I'd recommend by him is The Knife of Never Letting Go (I'd have to go check bookshelves if you want more recommendations).

I'm thinking of getting this for my 9 year old this Xmas
severusvape · 25/10/2021 09:17

The warrior cats series was a massive hit with my nine year old. There are loads of them and he read them all in quick succession.

DelurkingAJ · 25/10/2021 09:33

DS1 (9) adores The Moomins, Artemis Fowl and Asterix.

chillimice · 25/10/2021 14:14

This is really tricky as lots of kids are at different reading abilities - both mine (10 and 12) would struggle with the recommendations here (which are all great and I'm dead jealous of people who have kids that read like this!)

I buy at lot of graphic novels for mine including ones of classic kids books mentioned (like Phillip Pullman, Neil Gaiman, Tolkien, Anne of Green Gables, Anne Frank.. that kind of thing)

Buttercup72 · 25/10/2021 14:18

Diary of a wimpy kid is really funny, good for the 9 year old

Absinth13 · 25/10/2021 17:01

Artemis fowl series
Goosebumps?
Horrible histories
Harry Potter
His dark materials

17caterpillars1mouse · 25/10/2021 18:00

For the 9 year old what about an old classic that doesn't seem to be so popular atm like black beauty

rrhuth · 25/10/2021 18:42

For a 10yo I once got the full boxset of Oz, that went down well. For 12yo have they done Tolkien? Or I would probably go to the science section or something - there are such gorgeous hardback illustrated science books and they are now old enough to read things that will last into adulthood.

Beautiful map books, history, folk tales etc all come in such gorgeous versions and can be kept.

Carrie76 · 25/10/2021 19:27

My 11yr old likes Skulduggery Pleasant, Robert Muchamore cherub series and Alex Rider. My 9yr old loves the Matt and Tom Oldfield soccer books, biographies for kids of famous football players

Dogsandbabies · 25/10/2021 19:51

My 9yo loved her most recent book, Fireborn. She is getting the Christmas Pig, the 13 storey treehouse and the night bus hero.

ThisIsJeopardy · 26/10/2021 00:01

Topbird29 · 26/10/2021 08:00

Ds (9 & 7) are working their way through how to train your dragon set of books and are really enjoying them. 9 year old also read the narnia series this year.
