Vegan / vegetarian Christmas

Any thoughts for the main meal? I’ve got so guests who are vegan / veggie. I’m still waiting for the final details of what the dietary requirements are but want to get some ideas together in advance.

Thanks for dadsplaining, I am well aware of what the OP asked, just commenting on Yorkshire puddings.

FreyaHazel · 23/10/2021 12:25

I absolutely swear by the Tofurkey Roast. I haven't had it for a few years as I seem to be on shift every single Christmas but I used to get it from Holland & Barrett for about a tenner. Someone also mentioned the Sainsbury's pigs in blankets - I think they are from the Plant Pioneers range? They're amazing! I did buy their vegan jelly last year and the texture was horrible so probably wouldn't buy that again.

😂😂😂
Do you always make wring assumptions TrickyD
I'm not a dad.
Never have been, never will.

Anyway, I think it was you that was doing what ever planning because it's obvious something with egg and milk in is going to be non vegan.

Do you always misspell 'wrong' and do you not understand the use of question marks?

orangeautumnleaves · 23/10/2021 14:20

Last year I did a butternut squash and portobello mushroom Wellington. Was delicious!

notacooldad · 23/10/2021 14:20

Yes I often spell words wrong.
I do understand the use of question marks. However it seems you want to pick at me for grammatical mistakes? This has nothing to do with vegan/ Vegetarian food and you are making things personal.
Why would you do that?

mibbelucieachwell · 23/10/2021 14:38

Whole roast cauliflower looks great and cuts into good big slices
Something in pastry
Roast potatoes
Mashed potatoes
Cranberry Sauce or Redcurrant Jelly
Sprouts stir fried with soy sauce, garlic and honey
Vegan gravy
Roast parsnips/carrots/butternut squash

Treecreature · 23/10/2021 14:47

Anything but a nut roast. This is the go to for non-vegetarians cooking for vegetarians - it's so repetitive.

Understand what you mean but the range of styles of nut roast are huge as is shown by the different suggestions shown on this thread.
Not last year but the year before I had three nut roast meals in as many days and each meal was lovely and not the same.

It's not like the old days of being a veggie neatly 25 years ago where my choice was usually mushroom stroganoff or veggie lasagne.

Also if the OP is not familiar with veggie/vegan cooking I think the main part of the meal needs to be kept simple. I know doing a Christmas dinner isn't particularly hard but on the day it can get stressful trying to keep to timings so that everything comes together at the same time as well as entertaining guests.

As a guest I would be more than happy with a shop bought one.

Why would you suggest that fits the bill Treecreature?

Roast up Brussels sprouts with butternut squash and cranberries and pecans. Nice as a side dish xmas time anyway x

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 23/10/2021 19:25

There was a carrot&cashew nut roast in Lidl last year (frozen) that was delicious . don't know if it was vegan though.

I think a well made nut roast is great , if I was going to someones house for dinner I'd be pleased they'd made the effort ( wether it was bought or homemade) as it goes very well with the whole Christmas meal.

For me Christmas Dinner is not the day to try something new and fancy . I can do that any other day .

The Delia roulade mentioned above is delicious (but not for vegans) but as it has vegetables in it ( I use carrots and turnip) it's nice as a standaloe with salad .

I'd e happy with anything except goats cheese and red onion tart (as I don't like either )

YY to check what's vegan compared to what's vegetarian before you buy , but youd need to know your guests dietry requirements .

And if there were no Yorkshire Puddings my son would riot Xmas Wink

CatherineCawood · 23/10/2021 23:05

I went to Lidl today and picked up some of tje frozen Deluxe range of veggie/vegan wellingtons and nut roasts. They look amazing.

Going to try the goats cheese wellington tomorrow. The rest I will save for vegan DD who will be home from uni for xmas.

CorvusPurpureus · 23/10/2021 23:37

There are loads of recipes & 'buy in' options - that isn't the issue.

Ringfencing them so that the actual veggies get a decent portion before the omnivores scoff them is more of a concern.

I used to cook a Big Xmas Dinner most years for extended family, & always included a veggie option - usually some sort of Wellington although I've also done nut roasts & so on.

The meat eaters always zeroed in on them & fancied a slice/chunk alongside their turkey/roast.

Fine, but you need to cater for that, & give the vegetarians first dibs!

I’m not going to have a mixed dinner - I’ll build it around what everyone can eat. Carnivores can have a cooked breakfast or we’ll have a roast the night before and/or Boxing Day.

That brilliant pie making man has some great recipes for Veggie / Vegan pies.

They made some great ones on Masterchef

Calum from The Pie Room

catnidge · 24/10/2021 07:08

There are lots of recipes for vegan Yorkshire puds.
I do a mix of shop bought vegan and making my own. If a veg recipe requires an egg as a binder I add a small amount of apple sauce instead

LizzyELane · 24/10/2021 07:50

Just check if there's anything veggie they don't like. It's always assumed vegetarians like mushrooms. I can't stand the things and would hate anyone to go to the trouble of making me a mushroom wellington or a big stuffed portobello, eww!

notacooldad · 24/10/2021 09:08

Sorry OP, I just picked up on this about breakfast. Is there any reason the veggie/ vegan cant have a cooked
breakfast. I live having one when I go away.
I love hash browns, fried egg mushrooms, tomatoes beans and beans. I like the Richmond veggie sausages (some veggies find them too meat like and may prefer quorn)
I think you are going the right thing by having a nearly the same as dinner as everyone else. It'll be less stressful and if you do go down the nut roast route it can be made or bought in advance and just needs heating through.

I’ve tried the first two and they are indeed yum 🥰
Darker · 24/10/2021 09:42

The vegetarians won’t be with me for breakfast so it makes sense for those who want meat to eat it then.

They might want vegan / vegetarian wine.

Agree - so I think it's fair enough to ask them to bring whatever they would like to drink. Particularly for vegan guests, it can be a minefield. Eg some Prosecco is vegan, some isn't. Even some apple juice isn't vegan.
Although some vegans I know have the approach that if they can be reasonably expected to believe it's vegan, they aren't going to worry too much. But one vegan friend would check everything to be sure.
