Not quite christmas.. but close enough. Any suggestions for a 40th birthday gift?

OP posts:
MrsSkylerWhite · 20/10/2021 20:33

Not knowing anything at all about the recipient, no.

Odd question.

EcoCustard · 20/10/2021 22:45

As a 40 year old mum, I would of loved some sort of spa session or beauty treatment for a relax or pamper, nice facial and back massage.

Book voucher or my favourite gin. Alas I got bugger all for mine in the beginning of January.

Jasmine11 · 20/10/2021 22:56

Is it your mum OP, or an another 40 year old woman who happens to be a mum? If it's your mum, then something personal like jewellery or a bag, if someone else definitely nothing 'mum' related if it's a gift for her 40th! For my 40th my favourite present from a friend was a velvetiser which isn't very rock and roll but very much appreciated :)

lifestooshortandsoami · 21/10/2021 06:45

Voucher for a day/ evening out, gin or chocolate Grin
Do they have any hobbies? It sounds daft but I love running and when it was my 40th this year I’d have loved anything to do with my running- even waterproof socks! So even if it doesn’t seem exciting they might love it

JuneOsborne · 21/10/2021 06:47

Budget?

What's she into?

I'd have loved a book subscription from Willoughby. But you need to know enough about what she likes to read to get the right kind of books.

Fablou bags. The new totes are lush.

PermanentTemporary · 21/10/2021 06:48

The right sort of generic gift is great for the right person, the wrong sort is awful. So for example a bottle of champagne is always welcome to me but a gift set of smelliest just shows they don't know me.

Sn0tnose · 21/10/2021 07:03

What’s your budget? And tell us a bit about her (likes and dislikes, does she like high end stuff? Is she passionate about the environment? Do you want something generic or personal?)

I agree with PermanentTemporary A spa day would be my idea of utter hell and would very quickly and quietly be regifted.

EdmontinaDonsAutumnalHues · 21/10/2021 07:16

Hundreds of millions of women are mothers, OP, so it’s not a terribly distinguishing characteristic. And I’m pretty sure all the mothers in the world don’t have exactly the same list of preferred gifts!

Tell us something about this particular woman, then we might be able to help.

nellyburt · 21/10/2021 07:46

I turned 40 a few days ago and my best not too expensive gifts were vouchers for a restaurant I’ve wanted to try, a lovely homemade hamper with my favourite wine and cheeses in, a neom diffuser and a lovely print from Etsy.

Malin52 · 21/10/2021 08:05

What has being a mum got to do with adequacy of birthday gift? She's a mum so I'm guessing gin, temazpam, tena lady, heavy duty concealer and a new ironing board might be suitable?
Or is she your mum? In which case I'm not sure a bunch of strangers will know better than you?!

lazylinguist · 21/10/2021 08:16

Bit tricky without any indication about her likes or interests, and without at least a vague budget!

Redsquirrel5 · 21/10/2021 08:37

My niece bought me some Liz Earle products and depending on how much you want to spend I would love some of those. You need to start looking after your skin if you haven’t already and Liz Earle might be too expensive for some so it would be a treat it is lovely on you skin. If you can afford it there is a group of produce for £50 in Boots and a few other products. I love the skin cleanser.

babouchette · 21/10/2021 08:39

Mug saying "world's best mum" should do it.

EdmontinaDonsAutumnalHues · 21/10/2021 08:46

Don’t, babouchette. Grin

Millions of lurking readers might believe you!

fantasmasgoria1 · 21/10/2021 08:51

Forget about the fact she is a mum and look at the other aspects of her. What interests does she have? What kind of clothes does she like? Etc I don't receive gifts based on the fact I'm a mum!

Babdoc · 21/10/2021 09:00

My DDs certainly don’t give me “ mum based” birthday presents, and I wouldn’t exactly be chuffed if they did!
Instead, they give brill things, including:
A voucher for an hour’s training with a racing driver, then driving a rally car.
An iphone.
A contribution towards a city break in Prague.
Opera tickets.
I’m an elderly radfem, and would have been v disappointed to get crap like jewellery/handbags/spa days!

girlmom21 · 21/10/2021 09:02

Who is she to you? What are her likes and dislikes? What's your budget?

wtfisthatspiderdoing · 21/10/2021 09:03

A new mum? Your mum? Mum of teenagers? Any other interests other than being a mum?! More info needed op.

Skyeheather · 21/10/2021 09:04

I would absolutely hate a voucher for a spa day or beauty treatment, please don't buy this unless you know she would definitely like it. I received one once, it sat at the bottom of my handbag until it expired. And I didn't think much of the gift giver for thinking I'd like it.

If you don't know the person well make sure you give them a gift receipt so they can change it if they don't like it.

LetitGhost · 21/10/2021 09:04

I loved having a bunch of flowers delivered on my 40th birthday.
Also a Fitbit versa was a great gift from friends.

Lovemusic33 · 21/10/2021 15:03

I tough one because you haven’t told us what she’s into or about her lifestyle, I’m the same age and would hate most the things suggested above 🤣. I would hate a spa treatment or anything that involved beauty (just not my thing), flowers are ok but would prefer a houseplant as it lasts longer. I would be happy with gig tickets, a meal or day out, vouchers for my favourite shop or something related to my hobby.

BakewellGin1 · 21/10/2021 19:25

If it was me you were buying for... Nearly 40 and a Mum
Spa Day
Gin
Restaurant Vouchers
A lie in
A bath in peace ha ha

Daisy829 · 21/10/2021 19:32

I wanted to buy a small but nice gift for a similar recipient recently & got her some jo malone bath oil. That’s a realtreat in my eyes I would never spend £20 on a tiny bottle like that but I find it beautiful
I agree though you can’t go wrong with champagne or beautiful flowers

Christmas1988 · 21/10/2021 19:34

Nice Emma Bridgewater mug if it’s something under £25 or a lovely bouquet of flowers for something a bit more expensive.

Oatsamazing · 21/10/2021 19:35

I'm a 41 year old mum and I'd like Starbucks vouchers as a generic gift.
