Not quite christmas.. but close enough. Any suggestions for a 40th birthday gift?

without further info and assuming she has hands, isn't illiterate, and isn't crippled with arthritis?

Then my safe default when knowing NOTHING about a person is a pen as everyone needs one sometimes so it's useful but takes up little room in your life and doesn't greatly matter if it's not your personal taste.

Not an exciting gift though unless she happens to be crazy for pens.

in answer to your question as a mam and holiday is the best gift... doesn't need to be all expenses paid to Thailand or anything a night in an airb&b will do lol.

might be an odd gift if your not that close though, it would really be my husband I would expect something like that off.

Tom Hardy was a popular choice on the Christmas Stocking thread …

I’m a 46 year old mum. I’d cry if someone bought me a spa day/restaurant etc voucher cause I’d never get to use it (and I detest spa days).
I have specific make up and skincare preferences and definitely wouldn’t want someone to get me that unprompted/un-asked.

Special birthdays (40ths) possibly don’t need “special “ gifts - maybe take her for dinner and stuff to do with her specific interests/tastes.

LonginesPrime · 21/10/2021 20:55

Unless she's your mum, OP, I'd just treat her as a person in her own right.

I'm a mum but if someone other than my children got me a gift relating to my relationship to my children I'd be quite disappointed that they felt the fact I'm a mother to someone else is my defining factor.

LonginesPrime · 21/10/2021 20:55

*defining feature, I meant!

Cindi85 · 22/10/2021 07:29

Something for her children. It's all any good mother could want.

nearlywed21 · 23/10/2021 19:36

Sorry for the late reply all!

The reason I was vague and looking for good generic gift ideas as I don't know her well at all!
No, not my own mother (lol she would have had to be a child to birth me if that was the cause).
She is a new neighbour (while also being a friend of a friend) who I know in her capacity of being a mum. Works in an office but usually WFH and runs her kids around to allsorts of clubs.
She has invited us to her 40th do. Definitely do not know her well to get anything too personal. Just after nice generic gift ideas that isnt chocolate/flowers/wine.
Hope that clarifies things!

Nice personalised insulated coffee/tea mug to take with her on all her running round? MYbe some whittards hot chocolate sachets to go with it?

TenThousandSpoons · 23/10/2021 19:39

Nice candle or photo frame.
But choc/flowers/wine would be fine too I’m sure.

nearlywed21 · 23/10/2021 19:46

Also to add: Just from casual conversations, I think she has made reference to liking gin. Anyone have particular recommendations? (Ideal if I can order off Amazon etc )

OP posts:
parttimemary · 23/10/2021 19:47

In that context I'd just go with champagne and chocolates.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 23/10/2021 19:56

A one year subscription to 'Have I Got a Tattoo for You!' that includes...

12 tattoos, anywhere on your body, selected randomly from the magazine 'Easy Tattoos for the Beginner with Restricted Vision'

TenThousandSpoons · 23/10/2021 20:29

“Bathtub gin” is available on Amazon and very nice.

NoNotMeNoSiree · 24/10/2021 02:27

As a 40 something year old mum, I'd love candles or book vouchers.
Maybe get an idea of what she likes though as we're not all the same?
Eg I'd not be a fan of a spa day as a pp suggested, so it's better to know your audience Smile

NoNotMeNoSiree · 24/10/2021 02:29

Ohh just seen your update that you think she likes gin.
Maybe a nice gin glass then or bottle of the stuff

RestingStitchFace · 24/10/2021 11:51

Whitley Neill do some nice flavoured gins. The Blood Orange one and the Rhubarb/Ginger one are both LUSH 😁

buckeejit · 24/10/2021 15:09

@nearlywed21 I'd go on the Christmas referrals page & do a first order for the craft gin box - great price & a fab box of gin & other bits. I subscribe myself & love the box arriving but a single box would be a fab gift, (even if she's already a subscriber!)

Is this a nice / posh / giftable brand?

Bloom gin is nice - not flavoured, just plain gin. I can't drink strong gin, but like this one. Currently on amazon for £16.99 - normally about £24

Havehope21 · 24/10/2021 15:42

A really nice candle, good quality chocolate truffles (Carluccios do a delicious jar of them), a book / magazine subscription if you know them well enough - perhaps a cookbook if they are foodie (Nigel Slater's Christmas Chronicles is a lovely read).

User00000000 · 24/10/2021 15:44

My usual go to is a bottle of champagne/prosecco, but if she likes gin I'd just go with that. There's loads of nice ones around just now.

daisypond · 24/10/2021 15:48

Never a candle, spa day or any type of beauty treatment or products. No photo frame. No hot chocolate. No mugs.
Flowers or chocolate or gin, if you think she likes that, are OK.

Beefmeupscotty · 24/10/2021 15:58

Don't get a flavoured gin. Not everyone likes them, and those that do tend to drink 'normal' gin anyway.

Budget? A really nice one is Gutsy Monkey ~£45 a bottle.

nearlywed21 · 24/10/2021 16:01

Never ordered booze off amazon - do I need to be home to receive it?
