Still on the hunt for a Christmas/Winter candle or wax melt

Spent a fortune on the White Company Winter candles and reed diffusers last year. I still feel cheated. They smelt of nothing.

Any suggestions on what to try next? Yankee Candles are the same as the White Company. I don’t want the house overly fragranced but the whiff of something Christmassy would be lovely!

Lumos apothecary is a gorgeous make
@escapeyou so glad you mentioned about the WC Winter batch last year!! My diffuser smelt of nothing!!! Like you couldn't even tell it was there.

The candle wasn't much better...you had to be sat right next to it whilst lit. Otherwise it didn't have any noticeable smell.

I think I'll just buy the Winter oil and use a diffuser this year. Hope it works, as it's my favourite Christmas smell
I bought one last year for the first time and it was so badly made. The wick wasn't centred so it tunnelled and no smell at all

thecatmother · 03/10/2021 21:01

For the really generous throw of scent try Bath and Body Works . You can get these from ebay or Next. My personal recommendation would be Mahogany Teakwood for a sensual strong fragrance, and something like Fresh Balm , Frosted Cranberry for the Christmas smells.
Also they do very sweet baked goods inspired smells that work really well in the kitchen! I am a big fan of those over the designer ones.

babysnowman · 03/10/2021 21:07

I love a nice candle..JM, White Company, Neom etc. Despite that my favourite Christmas candles are the gingerbread tea lights from Asda 😂

Letsnotargue · 03/10/2021 21:16

Space NK Shimmering Spice. It’s the perfect mix of spicy without too much sweetness. It sells out quickly - I missed out last year but will definitely be in time this year.

Pattygonia · 03/10/2021 21:48

For inexpensive but lovely scents, I really recommend the candle tins sold in muji. I had a lovely myrrh one last year and also a clementine / spice one - can’t reme the exact name but it smelled really Christmassy

My absolute favourite is a Woodwick Trilogy One, Autumn Harvest Ellipse. I was gifted one a few years ago and it lasted ages. The scent filled the whole room and then some.
Not sure if you can still get them in that scent anymore but that to me was pure Christmas in a jar.

DappyApple · 04/10/2021 09:32

Just realised the Ellipse is the shape of the jar and nothing to do with the scent!!🤦🏼‍♀️

So just Autumn Harvest!

Espa always do absolutely gorgeous strong smelling Christmas candles, but they aren’t cheap! Elemis ones are similar.

imnotacelebritygetmeoutofhere · 05/10/2021 00:48

Last year I had a lovely smelling pine tree candle from John Lewis, and it came in a nice tin that I'm now using in my sewing cupboard. I'm hoping they have the same one this year, it was perfect - strong enough smell to enjoy it but didn't remind me of bleach or anything sickly like a lot of candles do.

Sn0tnose · 05/10/2021 01:55

Woodwick Frasier Fir smells like Christmas trees. And you get a lovely crackling sound.

Lovemusic33 · 05/10/2021 10:59

I love the gingerbread one from home bargains.

Also love wax melts from Emily and Victoria, they do one with peppermint in it that smells similar to Yankee candles candy cane lane (which they no longer make) and they do pixie potion that smells like lush snow fairy.

I've got the National Trust Blue Spruce and Frosted Pine candle. Smells good unlit so fingers crossed.

Ivy48 · 05/10/2021 11:09

Wax lyrical or sand and fog candles from homesense are fab.

I was just coming to say the best candles I've tried are Bath & Body Works.

The throw of the scent is amazing. It's the first candle I've been able to light then blow out once melted & you could still smell it all over the house.

Yankee Candle candy cane lane is lovely but not as strong as B&BW.

MarshmallowsOnToast · 05/10/2021 11:19

Tried all the Tk max ones, White Co, Yankee & Home bargains.

The home bargains are good for the price but still stand by my previous post.

This happened to me a couple of years ago. I complained and they refunded. They are still my favourite Christmas candles though and subsequent Christmas purchases have been fine.

Thewiseoneincognito · 05/10/2021 11:25

Diptyque Pomander. Pricey but You won’t be disappointed.

Carboncheque · 05/10/2021 11:28

Diptyque are lovely and very potent. You’ll definitely know when the candle is lit. They give off scent when unlit too.

Geamhradh · 05/10/2021 11:29

Be very careful with St. Eval. After reading glowing reviews on here last year, I bought some. They're fine, the scent is very subtle compared to some, but no issues. Then DD (17) started pouring with black snot. Totally black. Absolutely worried us sick. Doctors, hospital visits, all this black gunk in her nose and throat. Soot. From the candles.
Never had this from cheap as chips candles, ever.
Emailed them, they were a bit yeah but no but and said if I sent the candles back at my expense they'd have them quality checked to see if the soot came from them.
I didn't bother, but certainly continue to warn people. Hmm

I don't mind a Yankee if it's not over-powering. Sparkling Saffron is a favourite wintery one in this house, as is Autumn something (purple candle) I can't stand overly sweet vanilla ones. The red Christmas ones are usually good.

Neom are great, as are Skye. The Skye 3 wick ones are wonderful.

I do like WC Winter, though haven't had one for ages.

Geamhradh · 05/10/2021 11:30

Oooh Bath and Body Works are online here (Italy) so might try theirs!

Fjorduk · 05/10/2021 11:35

Try Freckleface (www.frecklefacehomefragrance.com). Honestly, I used to spend a lot of money with Jo Malone, Dyptyque, Neom, you name it. Then I found out these wax melts, they're so pretty and smell so nice! They have a winter collection, it's lovely for Christmas!

Ooh so lucky.

Yes you should give them a try!

Their hand sanitizer gels are fantastic too! 😊

youvemademyshitlist · 05/10/2021 12:39

Homes with Nomes do lovely candles and wax melts (and diffusers I think). I got some Christmassy ones last year, the gingerbread one was too overpowering but the frosted cranberries and winter fireside ones were lovely.
Plus, I like supporting small businesses, especially after the last couple of years.

loubielou31 · 05/10/2021 12:43

As someone up thread said M&S have their Christmas smelly stuff in. Their mandarin, cinnamon and clove was for me that perfect Christmas smell (I love that orangey small anyway). They had three or four Christmas ones in really pretty jars.
