Being prepared in case of shortages

We have an artificial tree. I have wrapping paper and sellotape and stocking gifts all sorted plus some potential big gifts just in case that I will roll over for birthdays if we can get what they ask Santa for nearer the time. I also have bought crackers and tree chocolates. Not concerned re Turkey as any roast dinner would do. What else haven’t I thought of that I might be sad not to have if there are shortages?
(Caveat - I know of the shelves are bare then Christmas is the least important thing, and o know that we are lucky to be able to afford this in advance)

The only consumables that make Christmas for me are pigs in blanket Grin il get a pack of them premade for the freezer but otherwise I'm not doing anything different to usual!

LolaBaby75 · 23/09/2021 17:20

Advent calenders
Quality street tubs (or equivalents)
Snacks, such as peanuts, twiglets
Things for cheese board such as crackers, oat cakes, chutneys
Drinks such as ginger wine, baileys
crackers
christmas pudding ingredients
stamps
christmas cards
chestnuts
jars such as cranberry sauce, brandy butter
sellotape
wrapping paper
batteries

GoldStarAngel · 23/09/2021 18:28

batteries - that is a good shout indeed!
And mmmm - ginger wine. I love a whisky and ginger
Chocolate advent calendars - yes of course!

Thank you!

Also I love pigs in blankets too. Must order some

Advocaat and some soft drinks for the kids. We normally stock up on multi packs of J20 and some fizzy pop. Going to get some tinned fruit and tinned custard in stock too

thelegohooverer · 23/09/2021 20:02

Whippy cream for hot chocolate.
Advent calendars if you’re doing those.

I always get a bottle of non alcoholic mulled wine for the drivers as it’s a faff to make compared with the real stuff, but nice to have the alternative.

There’s been talk on here about freezing roasties over the last few days so I’m going to investigate that as I’d be very sad if I couldn’t get my spuds.

CraftyGin · 23/09/2021 20:04

I am just going to go with the flow.

We had to be adaptable last Christmas and will do the same this year.

Food and bling is not the point of Christmas. It's all about a baby born into poverty, so remembering that when we can't make it just so is a good thing.

ThisIsNotAMill · 23/09/2021 20:04

Baileys and pigs in blankets. Lots and lots of them. That's all you need 🤷🏻‍♀️

PurBal · 23/09/2021 20:17

Basically this. If Christmas was tomorrow I could make it work.

Good call about the advent calendars. We left it late last year and everywhere had sold out. Will also get the squirty cream and some frozen desserts

PaperDolphin · 23/09/2021 20:25

Funnily enough I was thinking of this earlier. I think I'm going to clear a space in the freezer and cupboard, do my meal plan and start stocking up from the end of next month. I think for me it's turkey, chipolatas, streaky bacon, some desserts, chocolates, a ham, hot chocolate, puff pastry, stuffing, sausagemeat, cranberry sauce, port.... God There's loads!!!

LongDissidence · 23/09/2021 20:34

I'm usually such a Christmas person, but like pps, I'm thinking "well, if we're all going through harder times, I kinda want Christmas to reflect that. Let the kids see that getting everything isn't a god given right.", so I'll see how things are in December.

I do have slight wobbles, where I imagine all their friends getting tonnes of stuff that was bought months before, and feasting on Turkey and pigs in blankets, while we eat tinned soup and the kids play with paper dolls made from old magazines... but I'm sure it won't get that bad... will it?!

Thegirlhasnoname · 23/09/2021 20:52

We’ll make sure to have a back up bottle of calpol but I reckon we could probably make it work and jazz up pasta for Christmas dinner if need be

But definitely batteries and calpol (if you have young kids)

LastStarfighter · 23/09/2021 20:59

I feel the same as some PPs. Christmas planning really carried my through the last part of 2020, but I think I would find it stressful trying to plan the perfect Christmas around the shortages. I think to an extent I’d rather just accept it.

Plus the kids are older and would mostly be happy with games downloads, and we have plenty of decorations, so provided we could do a roast dinner of some description I think we’ll be happy. (Disclaimer- I’ll probably still end up getting stuck right in on this board in the next few weeks though!)

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 23/09/2021 21:04

We've got DDs pressies already, we do most of it in the sales throughout the year.

Sat down with DH the other day to think if we needed to get anything in advance and we basically decided we'd just go with whatever's available nearer the time. We've done teriyaki pork one year and we had a year where he was working nights so we did a huge fry up for Xmas dinner.

We got Xmas crackers and wrapping paper in the January sales, would like a new fake tree as ours is a bit tired but if we can't get one then the old one will do.

NightOwl19 · 23/09/2021 21:28

I'm thinking of getting our turkey and all DC main presents and things they really really would love and then wing the rest.

HungryHippo11 · 23/09/2021 21:37

We have a cupboard with presents which I usually keep topped up for last minute presents, or for birthday parties that sort of thing. So I can definitely pull together a stocking from those if necessary.

I have a big present for 18 month old already, have started looking for 4 year old. We don't buy presents for many other people.

I have a joint of beef in the freezer and a Christmas pudding from last year in the cupboard, so that will do us if necessary.

Sn0tnose · 23/09/2021 21:40

I’ve got 95% of my present shopping done (I start in May/June time to spread the cost) and we’ve got an artificial tree. We’re supposed to be in Wales for Christmas but God only knows what will be happening then. Nothing will be wasted though.

Emergency sprouts are in the freezer for bubble & squeak, home made stuffing is going in on Sunday, along with pigs (once it’s in the freezer, I play fast and loose with use by dates). We bought crackers and wrapping paper last week. We’re also going shopping at the weekend for all non perishables with the right use by date. But I do this every year anyway, simply because it’s normally me who does the fresh food shop (DH works in a supermarket so is rarely free to help at the time of day I want to go) and it’s a lot easier to only lug a couple of bags home on the bus, rather than dozens filled with bottles and tubs of sweets.

It’s nice to have all our normal treats, but it’s certainly not the end of the world if we can’t have them. So long as my loved ones are happy and healthy and I’ve got bubble and squeak, I don’t really care about what we haven’t got. I am prepared to fight for the last bag of Maris Pipers though.

HungryHippo11 · 23/09/2021 21:40

We don't have an artificial tree and I won't be buying one. But if we need one, my parents would lend us theirs - only adults in their house so not such a problem if no tree, compared to my house with small children.

Gubanc · 23/09/2021 21:49

funny thread about food shortages mentioning mostly 'luxury' items that Christmas can't be without. Ironic.
I really hope there won't be food shortages and those who can't afford to buy things ahead won't be hungry around Christmas.

Knock it off Gubanc. OP made it very clear that Christmas would be the least of her concerns if there were bare shelves and that she knew she was lucky to be able to do this.

RahRahRa · 23/09/2021 22:19

Actually I agree with Gubanc. Was laughing at the ridiculousness of this thread. I’m sure I can manage without sprouts for a year.

Sn0tnose · 23/09/2021 22:29

This thread popped up in active topics too did it? 🙄

PoshWatchShitShoes · 23/09/2021 22:34

I got my B&M initial sacks, so that's fine. Nothing to put in them yet though!!

I'm going to start my lists tomorrow. Picked up the handy planner at Home Bargains for this purpose 😂👏
