Would you buy toys for a 9 yo?

I've been pondering this. DD (9 and a half) is my youngest DC. She is still very much into toys - particularly baby dolls, Designafriend style dolls and Barbie style dolls. Along with lots of clothes and accessories. I know for Christmas she will ask for more of these. But I kind of begrudge buying more toys when she has loads and I assume she won't be playing with them for much longer (meaning I assume only another year or 2). But then I feel mean not wanting to buy her toys while she is still really into them! I think it was around 9 my DS last asked for a toy for Christmas. But I knew all his toys would get played with by the youngest so it wasn't an issue!

A few years ago I bought my goddaughter (1 think it was when she was 12?!) a doll she wanted & some clothes etc because her mum thought she was too old to spend money on buying her toys & she bought her shoes with heels, make up etc GD loved the doll & asked for more clothes when it was her birthday in the May - happy to oblige.

You'll soon be looking back to the days when the house was filled with dolls & stuff with nostalgia!

Dd is also 9, she’s asked for Lego friends and a few l.o.l omg dolls... I don’t mind getting a few because I too think she will outgrow them. I’m all good with the Lego though. She loving that and she’s very creative. Previous years she’s asked for many different dolls.

Stompythedinosaur · 19/09/2021 23:13

I'll be getting toys for both my 10 and 8yos. Developmentally it is great for dc to keep playing with toys as long as they want to.

Pinkchocolate · 20/09/2021 00:17

I’m pleased 😊 I hope she gets lots and lots of play out of them.

LulaMaeBarnes · 20/09/2021 00:37

@Nat6999 there’s nothing on the website and I can’t find any news stories about new Sindy dolls. Where did you find out about this?

TreaslakeandBack · 20/09/2021 01:19

DS9 plays with toys all the time. Lego, playmobil, Bakugan, transformers, knights and castles.
He is getting a new Lego set and some Bakugan for Christmas.

Nat6999 · 20/09/2021 03:10

LulaMaeBarnes look at @Sindyplayofficial on Instagram, there are 6 new play Sindy models coming out starting from £20-35, the £35 one includes a horse. Look on Facebook at the Vintage Sindy Collectors page for discussions about them. They are exclusive to Sainsbury's & Argos. Clothes & accessories are to follow. There is also a Deagostini collectors magazine coming out with a free reproduction of a vintage outfit in every edition & 3 free dolls during the collection, it's only out in the south at the moment but if you are buying any of the new dolls it's a good way to get outfits. I'm an adult collector ( there are lots of us)

Sweetener12 · 20/09/2021 12:35

I agree to PPs saying that a year or two is a long time for young children to play with toys. That being said, I'm a bit older than her and I still play with toys whenether I have a chance to, so nothing wrong with getting her some more Grin.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 20/09/2021 13:31

I think my DSis and I only really started getting Sylvanians at 9 or 10.

Having said that, baby dolls are quite big. Is there a particular one she wants, or would clothes/accessories/a sling be an option?

I don't think 9 is too old at all though. If I'm at my DParents' I'll often have a quick rearrange of the family in the dolls house (it's too big to fit through the loft hatch so is still out). My DSis or DM must do that too, because when I visited last time I found them all tucked up in their beds which wasn't where I'd left them!

Redwinestillfine · 20/09/2021 13:35

Just get her the dolls. They're only young once! My 10 yo wants dolls for Christmas. She still plays with them every week ( with her 10 and 11 yo friends).

Nat6999 · 20/09/2021 15:58

The new Sindy dolls went live at 3.00pm today if anyone is interested & there are videos on YouTube as well of the unboxing.

UndertheCedartree · 20/09/2021 22:10

@SleepingStandingUp - yes, I want her to enjoy what I get her. I suppose I think there are more useful things she would enjoy! But it's likely she won't be asking for toys in a couple of years so I think I will indulge it! But I will spend less on her than her older sibling. He got less spent on him at the same age and she'll get more spent on her as she gets older!

@Legoisthebest - sounds great! My 14 yo DS has always been a bit of a collector. He now likes the very expensive Anime style dolls. Which was fine until he persuaded his sister she wanted an Alice one for her birthday as she doesn't look after it and plays with it so bits go missing!

@user64325

Yes I definitely would. As long as they want them. Think of all the other expensive items you buy that you know won't last more than a year? Baby toys, Moses baskets, baby slings, baby walkers, ride on toys, clothes, etc. You'd probably buy teenagers expensive trainers or designer perfume that would last less than a year, so I don't know why toys have to have a longer time length value on them for them to be worth it once they get to around 10. It's not just you, it's a common question every year. Let them enjoy it while it lasts. If they grow out of it very quickly then it will probably be in good enough condition to sell it to fund their next hobby.
Yes, I want her to enjoy her toys while it lasts! The thing with all the baby stuff is it lasted 2 babies so got more use! And luckily my teen is happy with Primark for now! But I see what you mean - it does put it into perspective!

Oh, that's lovely! I definitely don't want her to grow up too quickly and I can definitely see her being a child that continues to play with dolls later than many peers. I would hate to make her feel she was too old for dolls!! That's it - I'm looking at Designafriends and BabyAlives galore! Smile

I'll admit it - I'm very keen on choosing clothes for the Designafriends! Grin To be fair she got her first baby doll at 5 and since then she has played (with her ever expanding collection!) everyday. She got Designafriends as the big sisters!

Ah, that's sweet! She likes the Baby Alive range - it has a never ending range of dolls! There is a specific one she would like and then clothes and accessories. She also wants another dolls bed as they all have to have somewhere to sleep! She has a bed, a travel cot, buggy and car seat they sleep in and then she uses cardboard boxes as well!

My 10yo has a number of dolls, I don't think it is too old. She has moved on to Our Generation/Designafriend dolls which seem a bit move socially acceptable in her friendship group.

The way she plays has changed as she got older - she will often be sewing outfits for them or choreographing a dance routine for them. She still enjoys them though.

Nat6999 · 20/09/2021 23:02

The new Sindy range will include accessories, clothes & furniture over the next few months & I'd any of you still have your childhood dolls & clothes, they will fit the new dolls.

RevolvingPivot · 21/09/2021 06:39

I have two dds.

My 11 year old hasn't had toys for 2/3 years. She's never been interested in dolls.

My 9 year old has so many LOLS and Barbies. I've said she can have more barbies but no more LOLS.

I put her baby dolls in the loft last year. She wants them bringing down. I thought she was too old to play with toys like that.

I know I'll be sad when I can no longer buy these things though.

She has the LOL house. Plane and Camper van which hardly get played with and they are massive and her room isn't huge.

As long as she plays with them I don't mind but to be honest she prefers Roblox.

I was hoping she would get into Polly Pockets as I loved those. I bought her 3 sets and the big house but she's not interested.

Mrsfussypants1 · 21/09/2021 09:44

It's looks like both our daughter (25) and myself (undisclosed) are putting dolls on our wishlist! Bratz for grown up DD and Sindy for myself. (Sweet treats if your reading Dd!)

Mrsfussypants1 · 21/09/2021 09:47

Oh and agree with the other posters, I'd go with toys too.

hiredandsqueak · 21/09/2021 11:09

Oh OP I thought that dd would grow out of dolls and I suppose she did in a way in so far as she doesn't play with them any more. Instead she collects Japanese dolls at £60 a time instead! Glad you are buying what she wants though as dd says you can never have too many of the things you love.

UndertheCedartree · 21/09/2021 11:13

@hiredandsqueak - I expect this will be DD! Her teen brother already collects Anime dolls!

OP posts:
hiredandsqueak · 21/09/2021 11:18

Dd is also partial to the odd anime figure as well! Ds collects model F1 cars, his and dd's rooms definitely don't meet my minimalist standards Grin.
