How Christmas is too Christmas?

I decorate the house including tree and outside lights, have a Christmas jumper as do the kids (as well as other Christmas clothes including PJs), and read Christmas books to them throughout December. We have (chocolate) advent calendars and a Christmas puzzle that gets an airing each year.

I always thought that, as far as Christmas "stuff" goes, Christmas bed linen was a step too far. I have had a complete mind change on this and am absolutely 100% getting Christmas themed bed linen for myself and kids this year.

Just browsing and noticed that you can get Christmas themed crockery... again feel this is a step too far (would you only use it on Xmas day?) Does anyone have it and it brings them joy? What Christmas themed objects do you have that may seem a step too far for other people?

We have
Lights, bedding, decorations in the lounge inc tree, kids have mini Xmas trees in their room, red bow on door, plates, bowls, glasses, mugs, jumpers, pjs
You can never have enough Christmas.

Inastatus · 19/09/2021 17:27

I have a set of Christmas dinner plates that belonged to my mum. They are gold rimmed with holly leaves round the edge and I love them. Also have Christmas mugs, oven gloves and hand/tea towels.

@loopylindi

As a confirmed 'Christmas-o-phile' if there is such a thing, I do love all the decorations (of which we have over 2000), lights, bling, table decs, banister swags and so on. We have themed rooms - one is decorated with decs that are like childrens toys/lights with snowmen shades and so on. One is set up as an ice cave - all blue, white and silver with giant fluffy snowballs hanging from ceiling wires, a white tree and clear glass baubles like giant bubbles. The dining room is more 'adult' with gold, green and touches of red with very full swags down the staircase. The main lounge is a 7ft tree totally dripping in decorations inc those from around the world so it's a trip down memory lane to holidays we've had. I know our relatives think it's a bit OTT but we love it. Incidently there are no rope lights or decs anywhere
This sounds like heaven to me! 😍

We have outside decorations of lights and lights in the front window and a front door wreath. We've bought some little trees this year that I will be decorating with lights and bows.
The hallway has lights and tinsel up the bannister, and Christmas figures and signs, and a little tree in the window.
Front room has the main tree with my decorations from holidays, what DS has made and lots of Disney. Tinker bell sits on the top instead of a star or an angel. It has a train around the bottom and some light up presents. We also have other bits we put out like Christmas snow globes. Lights around doorways, tinsel over pictures and the fireplace along with our stockings. And DS's felt Christmas tree on the wall.
Dining room is where I let my DH decorate. Lights go all around the room, he has his Christmas village across the radiator cover, and if he's feeling nostalgic he puts up foil decorations hanging from the ceiling.
Conservatory is also the playroom. We have our 2nd big tree which DH and DS decorate with the non breakable decorations. DS loves having his own tree. DH May also put lights up around the room (we love lights).
We have Christmas bedding but it's not in your face Christmas (DH's stipulation). It's grey and white snowflakes.
I have been looking at the Christmas Disney plates and bowls from Asda as it combines my 2 favourite things. DS has his own plastic Christmas plates and bowls but I don't. Maybe this year. Would love Christmas tea towels as well. The kitchen usually looks very plain compared to the rest of the downstairs of the house but it's so small it can't really be decorated.

batmanladybird · 19/09/2021 17:30

We have Xmas bedding but not xmassy pyjamas anymore
Xmas mugs and tablecloth
Few plates with holly for serving. Not whole set
Oh and I bought reusable Santa soap dispensers

Figmentofimagination · 19/09/2021 17:36

@PaperDolphin

Oh, Christmas Yankee Candle. Always.
Christmas Eve from Yankee Candle. I bought a few of them so I won't run out for years.
Incywinceyspider · 19/09/2021 17:44

We also have themed rooms. So the living room is more traditional with red and white decorations, garland on the fireplace etc. Then the conservatory is an ice cave with icicle lights and a light up reindeer.

We have outside lights and a different light up reindeer for the garden. This year I want to get some giant baubles to hang off the tree if I can find them. We also have a santa stop here sign.

We bought our first Christmas bedding last year for our bed. DS will be transitioning to a bed soon so might get him some this year, but might wait another year.

We have a wooden Christmas eve box, personalised santa plate and I'm currently on the hunt for a wooden advent calendar.

Last but not least, I have Christmas table mats and a Christmas tree shaped serving dish. Really want a Christmas gravy boat.

That sounds like loads doesn't it? But it's been built up over a good few years. I draw the line at cushions and toilet seat covers. I've also had the same Christmas jumper for the last 5 years

BeyondMyWits · 19/09/2021 18:02

Glad some others have festive shower curtains too... always feels over the top! But now I'm thinking of a bathmat and maybe some teatowels for the kitchen too...

Great thread!

CrazyBaubles · 19/09/2021 18:13

A few years ago we went away for Christmas and stayed in a lovely b&b in Scotland. Every room was full of Christmas themed stuff - it should have felt overdone but it was all so cosy. Full of tartan and things based on nature. I've used this as my aim and will be working on it for the next few years I think!

We have Christmas crockery - I use the plates / dishes from around a week before Christmas until new year. I love them, they make me feel extra festive (and organised Xmas Smile).

I was also given some Christmas themed tea towel last and hand towels which I'm looking forward to using this year.

I have a few jumpers, a pair of pjs and some Christmas socks, along with a reindeer mug I use throughout winter. And last year my lovely dad found and bought a ceramic Christmas tree lamp for me which will be starting out in my office at some point towards the end of November before coming downstairs in December 🎄

I have an agreement with DH to keep the bedroom a Christmas-free zone so no Christmas bedding here (I would if I could though).

I am currently in the process of buying some festive cushions and will be looking for some red tartan napkins soon.... more is definitely more here Xmas Grin

BananaPB · 19/09/2021 18:16

I have a Xmas mug.
I've seen the Xmas crockery and they'd be good for Santa if you don't have the space for a full set.
I buy Xmas scented cleaning products
The kids have Xmas nick nacks for their bedrooms including a mini tree if they want it.
I have Xmas tea towels and Xmas bedding

FireworkParrot · 19/09/2021 18:26

I have a few Christmassy plates that I use for putting out mince pies or cheese and crackers and a few Christmas mugs. I actually want to increase my collection and am aiming to buy a new one each year. We put our tree up early, first weekend of December so they come out of storage in the loft with all of the other decorations then I swap some plain mugs/plates over and put them in the loft storage so I'm not running out of space in the cupboards.

I haven't stretched to Christmas bedding or cushions but this this year may be the year. Xmas Grin

vincettenoir · 19/09/2021 18:44

@unexpectedthird no I didn’t think that it was something people use just for one festive period. But in my view it’s excessive to buy bedding for a household that is only used for one week a year. I accept that the more years it is used, the less of a wasted resource it is.

But I generally think re-using stuff is the way to go with Xmas novelty stuff. I just bought my dd a second hand Xmas jumper on eBay and will donate it once the festive season is over.

Rosiiiiie · 19/09/2021 18:51

We pretty much have the basics: Xmas kitchen towels, Xmas apron, Xmas candles, mugs, tablecloth, jumpers, socks, dog has Xmas bandana. I also have Xmas earrings, hair accessories and nail polish.

This year DH suggested we get Xmas bedsheets. Thanks to this thread I also want to get bath mats and plates 😂

GoldStarAngel · 19/09/2021 18:55

Okay now I am buying Christmas tea towels and a Christmas bath mat

Whatwillbewilbe · 19/09/2021 19:03

We have lots of Christmas homeware, lights, garlands and wreaths, and other decorations.

Someone mentioned earlier about space for storage for Christmas cushions - just use your normal cushion pads and buy new Christmas covers instead. Amazon sell loads of them.

There's no such thing as too Christmassy Smile

UndertheCedartree · 19/09/2021 19:16

I don't think there is a thing as too Christmas. If it brings you joy, why the hell not?!

Almost anything is a step too far on Mumsnet, though!! One year I talked about the special 'Christmas Breakfast,' I do for my DC on 1st December and a few posters completely slated me for it! It got branded 'plastic tat mentality' by one poster despite not including any plastic tat! Others then joined in by having a Plastic Tat Mentality breakfast on 1st December! Grin It still makes me laugh now!

So apart from that other things - a snowflake hand towel, Christmas hand wash, DC have Christmas themed divided plates and bed linen. We have mugs and plastic cups and a throw for the sofa.

Other things I do that are seen as extra by Mumsnet are (whisper) a Christmas Eve box (!) and better not mention my DC also get treats from St.Nicholas and a present from the 3 Kings!

Chicchicchicchiclana · 19/09/2021 19:22

I think it's too Christmas if you start thinking about it before 1st December. People tell me I'm an old grouch but there you go.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 19/09/2021 19:23

We have a Christmas paper tablecloth.

UndertheCedartree · 19/09/2021 19:31

My DD and I also have matching Christmas PJ's, tops and jumper dresses!

BeyondMyWits · 19/09/2021 19:37

Oh... chicchic that reminds me we always have a paper tablecloth, a Christmassy colouring in one. Family tradition that keeps everyone at the table. Have had one every year since they were 5 and 7. Now 19 and 20... we should have kept the same one but it would be toxic by now with all the gravy...

unexpectedthird · 19/09/2021 19:49

@vincettenoir that's fair enough.

I'm 100% with you when it comes to things like Christmas Jumpers. Especially for kids. Ours are re-used and handed down and we also have a re-use scheme at school for them.

But I don't feel it's wasteful to have something you only use sometimes as long as it is used to the end of its life like bedding.

Anoisagusaris · 19/09/2021 20:03

@vincettenoir bedding gets used for a full month here, and it’s reversible so gets used at times during the year too.

mamatoTails · 19/09/2021 20:07

Would absolutely love Xmas bedding for December if we could afford it!
I'd like Xmas crockery and place mats - I think if we had any spare money I'd rather get the crockery and placemats before the bedding. But absolutely, if we could afford the bedding I would, especially for young children! So fun!

BigGreen · 19/09/2021 20:28

When I was in my twenties my beloved Gran gave me Christmas hand towels and I was like "thanks"/WTF. I couldn't bear to charity shop them and found them at the back of a wardrobe lately. I was so delighted, I finally aged into them and now have a lovely extra memory of her Smile

rathernotshare · 19/09/2021 20:43

For me it's the expense. I'd love to deck out EVERYTHING but I accept I will just have to buy a little bit each year 😂

Molehillfromamountain · 19/09/2021 20:46

Oh I like this thread, I have always stopped short of Christmas crockery as I don't have enough space to store it year round. I do have a few themed bowls for nibbles and mugs though.
We have a real tree in the lounge, fake trees in the kids bedrooms and a mini fake tree in the kitchen. I have bedding which we use throughout December and have had for a few years, plus throws and cushions. (Just the covers which I swap out to save space.)
I bought some Christmas sheets in the sales which I cut up and made into fabric gift wrapping that we reuse each year.
I have hand towels and a Santa soap dispenser for the bathroom, last year I bought the M&S Christmas loo roll too.
The kids get a set of Christmas pj's they wear all year and a jumper which gets passed on to their younger cousins.
I'm after some new lights for outside this year, inspired to start looking now Grin
