How Christmas is too Christmas?

I decorate the house including tree and outside lights, have a Christmas jumper as do the kids (as well as other Christmas clothes including PJs), and read Christmas books to them throughout December. We have (chocolate) advent calendars and a Christmas puzzle that gets an airing each year.

I always thought that, as far as Christmas "stuff" goes, Christmas bed linen was a step too far. I have had a complete mind change on this and am absolutely 100% getting Christmas themed bed linen for myself and kids this year.

Just browsing and noticed that you can get Christmas themed crockery... again feel this is a step too far (would you only use it on Xmas day?) Does anyone have it and it brings them joy? What Christmas themed objects do you have that may seem a step too far for other people?

@BeyondMyWits

We have a Christmas shower curtain... bright red with a cartoony rudolph on it... 1st December... bring it on!
Mine is a Santa one!

I have a cruet set, serving platter, Christmas bath mat, Christmas tree shaped plates. There’s probably more!

Pumpkinstace · 19/09/2021 17:04

I have Christmas tree, lights on the windows and Christmas ornaments like a lego gingerbread house and a lantern etc. We have Christmas mugs.

This year I redecorated the living room and got a new sofa so I'm going to get a couple of Christmas cushions and maybe a throw.

I fill vases with Christmassy foliage too.

genius. when my dds come home from university in december I usually have a little christmas tree in their rooms. This year I am going to have a christmas shower curtain in their bathroom!!

We have a huge tree with a mixture of decorations from new to 60 odd years old. I also have snow globes, a 4ft metal snowman drummer boy, a metal train that goes under the tree, a garland that goes down the stairs and we have a wreath on the front door. We have about 6 or 7 sets of Christmas bedding (but these start going on about October/November time because they’re incredibly cosy) and I’ve seen another few sets I like this year, but only ASDA, so not super expensive. We have new pyjamas on Christmas Eve but they aren’t particularly Christmasy; just cosy. DH’s work encourages Christmas jumpers etc throughout December so he has a few.

I don’t have Christmas crockery but I NEED some!

bluechameleon · 19/09/2021 17:08

I dont have a full dinner set but I have some mugs and a few serving dishes that come out in December. I'm contemplating buying the new Emma Bridgewater oven glove and tea towel set because I really like it.

@PattyPan

Oh I do have quite a lot of Christmas mugs but you can get them in Germany for like 2€ at a Christmas market by not returning them after you’ve had your Glühwein. They usually say the name of the market and the year so they are nice keepsakes. I’m not sure if British Christmas markets do the same thing.
Manchester does.

The Spode Christmas's Tree collection if people are unfamiliar.

I've got a few Portmeirion Christmas things too.

I have these too... but because I'm a bit lazy they all get stacked in with the normal stuff No one notices until December the 1st 😀😀
Tangledtresses · 19/09/2021 17:11

I do have a special table cloth, runner and Christmas glasses that only come out at Christmas 🎅🏼
Oh and a growing Xmas tree in the back of the garden that gets decorated at some point in December

Jeepchangingmyhame · 19/09/2021 17:12

I have xmas duvet sets, Xmas Cath Kidston mugs
Lights in windows, tree, also light up Candy canes in the garden.
Various decorations in the living room and kids room, Xmas song played from November.

EasyLifer · 19/09/2021 17:15

I've never seen the Spode before but it's lovely, I've just been on their website and I want everything! They even have tree decorations.
Loving the crotched snowpersons too!

I have the plate, I put my mince pies on it.

I have the lot and usually wear Christmas headbands and other novelty items throughout December.

People think I'm too Christmas but they're wrong.

FlatterNow · 19/09/2021 17:18

I have a significant quantity of Spode Christmas tree crockery that I share with my sister (we take it in turns to host Christmas). My mum was a big fan and after she died some of her furniture was being sold at auction, and in the same sale there was a box full of the Spode stuff. My sister and I decided it was a Sign and we had to buy it...

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 19/09/2021 17:18

When Christmas starts rolling round I start getting crafty. Last year it was crocheted snowpersons grin. I have about five in the house, and made some for anyone who showed the slightest bit of interest.

Who wouldn't be interested?! They're adorable!

I have a Christmas apron, and a Christmas mug that I won at the school Christmas Fair when I was 7 that I use in December. I have a couple of nice serving plates as well. I also have Christmas socks. Grin

I think bedding is probably a step too far for me, although I'm not sure why. I think it might be that we don't decorate upstairs. I wouldn't buy crockery because we already have a "best" dinner service.

PaperDolphin · 19/09/2021 17:19

@vincettenoir

I wouldn’t judge you too harshly for getting Christmas bedding. But I think you should consider buying it second hand or at the very least passing on or recycling the fabric when you’re done with it.
The way I see it, I only have 2 sets of bedding per bed anyway. The Christmas bedding would be used for all of December, wash, dry and put back on on the same day, then used year after year. I can't see it as any more wasteful then non-Christmas bedding.

I used to Christmas up everything! I was the neighbour with the most lights and decorations outside, everything inside was covered in something festive, salt and pepper pots, soap dispenser in the bathroom, you name it, it had Christmas splashed all over it!

My DC are adults and have left home. Last year I didn't even bother to put up any cards or decorations. Lunch was a WW microwave meal for one!

PandemicAtTheDisco · 19/09/2021 17:19

I had in-laws that won't have anything tacky or tasteless, in their opinion. At Christmas, they have a few sprigs of holly, mistletoe, ivy scattered about, a real tree and wreath, a card display mount. They have a Christmas candle and angel chimes.

A few years ago they were gifted a santa toilet seat cover and bathmats by a beloved grandchild. I wish I could have seen their response on opening the present!

PaperDolphin · 19/09/2021 17:19

Oh, Christmas Yankee Candle. Always.

We do it in stages.

On the 1st December the Christmas books, lego, happyland and soft toys come out so they can be read and played with for the full month. That's when the duvet covers appear as well and they stay for the full month.

We don't actually fully decorate until quite late - usually 2 weekends before Christmas and once we've done that we will use some of the Christmas mugs etc we have. The main Christmas tableware doesn't appear until Christmas Eve when we have a party food tea.

It's used until around the 30th when I get sick of it and don't want it out for Hogmanay. We don't have a dinner set but we do have lots of tableware and things like that. I haven't found a dinner set that I love yet. The bedding goes away then too but we don't take the decorations down unless we have Hogmanay plans and they would get in the way.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 19/09/2021 17:21

Actually, the Christmas card mount has reminded me — I string my cards up, so they decorate the walls.

AliceMcK · 19/09/2021 17:22

I love this, you don’t have to buy special Christmas crockery and cutlery but still make your table setting very Christmassy 🧑‍🎄⛄️

How Christmas is too Christmas?
Ninkanink · 19/09/2021 17:23

We use Christmas/winter mugs every day through December/January.

Other than that I don’t have specific Christmas crockery, but I would if I could legitimately justify the cost of getting a truly beautiful and elegant set (the ones I like are very expensive).

We don’t have Christmas bedding but if I still had young children I probably would get them Christmas bedding to use throughout December. Exactly as you’ve said in comment just above mine which I’ve just seen, it’s not wasteful as it’ll be used every year.

MazzleDazzle · 19/09/2021 17:23

We have Christmas mugs, a serving plate and a plastic tea tray. The kids have plastic Christmas bowls, plates and cups. We use them throughout December.

I’d love lights round my house, but our house is really tall. We’ve never gotten round to doing it.

I couldn’t be arsed with Christmas bedding.

unexpectedthird · 19/09/2021 17:24

@vincettenoir I'm confused, are you imagining that Christmas bedding gets thrown away at the end of the festive period? We've had ours for several years now and store and re-use. It will only be replaced when it needs it like our other bedding so I don't really consider it to be wasteful.

(I have secret visions of my DC coming to stay at Christmas as adults and still using their Christmas bedlinen.)
