Quick, do I go for a Nintendo DS or a Wii?

Dd will be getting a Nintendo DS for Xmas (to replace the one her little brother threw down the stairs) but yesterday a friend told me to go for the Wii instead. Apparently it has the added advantage that we can all play with it. I'm an absolute dope about all this stuff - can anyone help me before it's too late? Thanks!

IMO it is nice to e able to share rather than have a dc with their head stuck in a game that no-one cen relate to or enjoy. Christmas and January are great times for things like this as you can have a cheap family activity without having to go out in the cold!

Having said that if she has had one broken then it is only fair that it shoould be replaced....not much help really sorry!

sensiblehead · 04/12/2007 10:45

sorry for the terrible typing!

There are good points to both, but whatever you decide it may be swayed anyway with the fact that everywhere seems to be out of stock of the nintendo wii's.

They have got them on ebay but for silly money.

I have both and at the moment I enjoy playing on my DS most though the wii is great to on with other people.

fortunecookie · 04/12/2007 10:48

ooo, I'm lucky! They've got stacks of them over here, literally! Expensive as 2 DSs though.

Sorry didn't mean to boast but I think they're more expensive in Switzerland than in the UK - that's why there are more of them available or maybe the swiss decided to order in huge quantities.

If anyone desperately needs one, let me know & I'll get you one but I've just discovered that sending things through the post from CH the UK is very expensive.

Also, how do they work? Are they suitable for a 4 yr old (probably not!)

bump - I really, really need an answer re a Wii being at all suitable for a 4 yr old. Please!

A 4 year old will be able to play a fair few game son the Wii. DD was 4 when she first played on a friend's Wii and she was really good at bowling (part of Sports package). DD is now 5 and loves the Wii, and is getting a DS for Christmas too.

TBH though it may be the actual getting hold of a Wii or a DS that might be the problem, as both are very limited in stock.

Iklboo · 07/12/2007 14:05

Lots of games available for both suitable for 4 year olds. Bonmus with Wii is that you get to play it after LO gone to bed and have ENORMOUS fun! (I can beat DH at boxing on the Wii )

fortunecookie · 07/12/2007 14:08

I can get one here but not sure I should be shelling out the CHF 399! Sooo much money for something ds may not be mature enough to enjoy. Also worried that I won't know how to set the thing up!

If I could work out some settings, I am sure anyone can. Wii comes with the wii sport which has 5 main sports. My DD just turned 4 and now plays tennis, golf and beat me in bowling. She absolutely loves it. Go for the wii. Also lost a stone doing the boxing everyday. Need I say more

wheresthehamster · 07/12/2007 14:16

The good thing about DSs is their usefulness - car journeys, doctor's waiting rooms etc

Hulababy · 07/12/2007 15:54

Very easy to set up BTW. Just plug and play.

Does she have ds games already ? Wii ones are £££

fortunecookie · 07/12/2007 22:23

Sounds good! I'm very tempted. Will exchange ds' Carrera racing car track thingy & add the extra money from somewhere.

We have a Wii. We all play it together (jumping around the living room).
Get a Wii!!!!

ChristmasPresence · 07/12/2007 22:45

Fortune - we have one and my DS who's just turned 5 is absolutly brilliant on it. he beats us all hands down at most of the games, particualry golf and bowling! It really is great - we're having a bowling game on Christmas Day with all the family. If you get one you won't be sorry, I can assure you. Even my DP (who hates this sort of thing) is quite hooked! It's worth getting Wii Play, because the games are fun and you get another controler with it.

Krimble · 08/12/2007 00:36

Ask yourself if you mind DD taking over the TV and entire living room everytime she wants to play or if you want her to be able to play quietly by herself?

Wii does look good fum for all the family though .

THE OP lives in Switzerland and neither are out of stock there, she even offered to get either one and post to anyone who requested.

fortunecookie · 10/12/2007 11:17

Okay, Wii purchased. (Whew, never thought I'd spend that much on a child's Xmas present)

Now I need to know what games are suitable for a 4 yr old boy & a 7 yr old girl, please.

Good on you for getting your wii, but I don't really know which games to suggest.
