What are you buying your 9yo?

9yo DS is getting tickets to Harry Potter world for Christmas so I won't be buying much more but would like some little things for him to open and hopefully keep him busy on the day.

He loves Harry Potter and pokemon, reading, playing on switch or PS4. He likes Lego but only building the sets and then he never looks after them and bits are missing after a week. He has an Alexa. I feel like he is at an awkward age (almost 10) where he isn't in to as many toys now but I would rather he didn't spend all day on a screen!

What smaller bits/stocking fillers are you buying your 9/10yo?

Good question!
He likes Bakugan so something to do with that?
A stranger things t shirt
We already have loads of HP stuff but maybe a funko pop thing.
Main present keeps changing- so far he has mentioned a big Lego set, a gaming chair (he has a switch but rarely plays on it) or a hoverboard.

Beakerandbungle · 27/08/2021 07:47

I have exactly the same problem ( although think main present may Harry Potter lego - he also tend to just build and look at it!). Am really stumped this year and finding him much harder to judge. Will prob get him a onesie fleece as he still likes those, maybe something small Marvel related - sorry I’m no help!

I'm not sure what we're getting yet, but some birthday presents that mine liked were harry potter dobble (it's a matching/speed card game, a lot more fun that it looks at first glance and 5 ways to play)
A chocolate frog, Bertie botts every flavour beans and 'butterbeer' (all on Amazon)
And rollerblades.

Name12341 · 27/08/2021 07:59

Also if you haven't already got it then uno is another enjoyable card game for this age.

MrsPworkingmummy · 27/08/2021 08:20

My 9 year old DD will be receiving:

  • Skateboard
  • helmet
  • oversized jumper
  • Black converse
  • hair crimpers
  • Stocking fillers such as body lotion, nail varnish, chokers, coloured hair spray, bath bombs
Pascha · 27/08/2021 08:24

Ds2 wants a plasma ball. Nothing else. Just that. Confused

SpnBaby1967 · 27/08/2021 08:26

My 9yo loves pokemon soft toys. The problem is, she has so many she now wants the really obscure ones that even if they do exist I have to get shipped from Japan.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 27/08/2021 08:52

One of my 10yos favourite board games from the past couple of years is Harry Potter Cluedo. It does need three players though.

Some of the Lego sets are god for building then displaying, like Hedwig and Fawkes.

Angelmonkey · 27/08/2021 09:13

My son was recently given the hot wires electrical circuits kit - he is learning all about circuit as well as building his own FM radio, burglar alarm and lie detector. I’d recommend it for 9-10 year olds

MinnieJackson · 27/08/2021 11:14

H&m have some really nice Harry potter slippers in at the minute

JimmyLennon · 27/08/2021 12:18

Thank you for all for the suggestions! Will be checking them out today.

@MrsPworkingmummy I like the sound of your 9 year old...I have a birthday and xmas to do and all he likes is nike and football Hmm

Filterphobia · 27/08/2021 12:52

9yo who sounds very similar here. Rarely plays with toys. We are going with a vinyl record player as his main gift as he loves music and we recently stayed at an air bnb with a record player in and he was fascinated with it.
I’m also getting him a graffiti art kit from the works, an illuminated apparel tshirt, a candy sushi set from tofu cute, and chopsticks. After that I have run out of ideas and I’m really struggling so will be watching this thread with interest.

MrsPworkingmummy · 27/08/2021 12:55

@Smile3 She's going through a 'goth' stage at the moment. Dread the teenage years! She spends sooooo much time in front of a screen that I'm happy to buy her things that get her outdoors

yoshiblue · 27/08/2021 14:07

@SpnBaby1967 We collect Pokemon soft toys too! Look on some of the niche sites like Chaos Cards, Magic Madhouse, Games and Cards etc as a small selection do get released each year. We've recently bought Teddiursa, Vulpix, Wooloo, Yamper is next on the list.

To the OP, my DS nearly 8, loves his Switch, Pokemon, Zelda, Minecraft. He also loves board games so we'll get a couple for the family to play over Christmas. Also some books, Nerf guns, some Winter tennis clothes.

I did him a large jar of Pick n Mix last Xmas (mainly different packets from Sainsbury's / Tesco all mixed together. He loved that so I'll do it again.

JimmyLennon · 27/08/2021 16:06

Both of mine would definitely love a big jar of pick n mix! It feels like he has everything already, but doesn't actually use it. He does like the Harry Potter dobble as we have that already, and he does like music but he already has an Alexa in his room he uses every day. He'll definitely be getting a couple of books and probably some HP clothes.

Why is 9 such a hard age?! The baby is so easy to buy for. I think I'm worried they will open their presents and the 6yo and baby will have stuff to play with immediately but he will be a bit underwhelmed with not much to actually play with. I guess that's part and parcel of getting older. It doesn't help that he doesn't even have an idea of what he wants

Dd will be 9 in 2 weeks and I just about managed to find her stuff.... she growing out of her dolls.. she loves art so may centre around that... tbh she would have the whole of smiggle if she could 🤦🏼‍♀️ Her bike is also too small although she much prefers her scooter than bike which I’ve just brought for her birthday. She is into lego but we’ve not got much space for it. I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it.....
I did purchase her a slap buddy from smiggle today....

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 28/08/2021 00:17

My dd is 9, totally unhelpful for your ds but incase it helps others with dds! her main gift is going to be a hair styling head and accessories.
But making her treat boxes with all her favourite foods/things I usually say no to!
Beauty box with bath bombs/face masks/nail varnish.
A fur coat.

But pokemon wise, its quite expensive but funko are doing a pokemon advent calendar this year, you get a mini funko pop figure each day. Dds have had the harry potter ones in previous years and they are fantastic quality and good value considering their usual individual cost.

Build a bear pokemon are lovely quality (I collect them!).

Qwertee have quite a selection of pokemon tshirts but they have daily ones that change too so more might come up.

EMP have pokemon & harry potter clothing and accessories.

H&M also have pokemon and Harry potter clothes.

Harry potter wand? I bought dds some replica ones from China, surprisingly good quality and design.

The illustrated versions of harry potter are stunning.

Primark often have lots of harry potter merchandise especially in the run up to Christmas.

One year I made dd1 Newts case from fantastic beasts - I got an old suitcase from a charity shop, some cuddly nifflers, a bendy bowtruckle. Some stolen treasure (plastic diamonds from poundland and chocolate coins), a harry potter note book, pen, wand, a copy of fantastic beasts and where to find them. I cant remember what else I had in there but she loved it ❤

anyoldname76 · 29/08/2021 18:18

Im not sure yet for my 9yr old ds, I've only bought a stretch gorilla and a horrible histories colour in scroll so far.there will be a board game, play doh, Lego and soft toy on the list. I think main present will be a bike. I'm all out of ideas this yesr

Runningforcakes · 29/08/2021 18:24

Mine still likes toys-nerf guns, hot wheels, bakugan etc. But I feel like he can’t possibly need /want any more!

Considering a games console but no idea which one-switch, PlayStation or x box

Fidget toys still popular here

ohmyohmy123 · 29/08/2021 19:27

Last year my ds was 9 and had an oodie, electronics set, switch, Lego, Harry Potter invisibility cloak, dinosaur track set

This year he's obsessed with Star Wars and wants figures. He also wants an oculus quest which will a shared present with sibling.

For his bday he had Star Wars Lego millennium Falcon and darth Vader's castle.

He also loves clothes and having a matching tracksuit.
