Okay - answers needed to the following please!

a) What can I buy for dd2 aged 10. She is quite "old fashioned in her tastes, needs nothing and doesn't seem to want much either. So far I have got her 2 books, some stickers and some bath bombs - that's it!

b) Why did dd1 act like I'd gone mad when I said I was wondering about buying my nephew a baby boy doll? Is this stupid, as she seems to believe it is, or is it a nice idea for a little boy (who is nearly one).

Thankyou oh wise ones.

Your dd1 is probably still stuck in teenager sexual identity conformism angst. Of course a doll is fine for a baby boy! My 13m ds2 likes dolls, especially ones that make a noise/have hair/have eyes that open and close.

My lot are too young for me to answer your first question though!

janeite · 01/12/2007 22:13

Have you met her PrettyCandles? You've described her perfectly!!!!

Could you recommend any particular doll please? The ELC do one but had sold out; does that mean that lots of people think it's fine, or that lots of people are buying boy dolls for girls?!!!!!

Ds2 plays with dd's dolls. His current favourite is a large Noddy that sings the theme tune when you press its tummy. The tune is very easily triggered, so ds can do it himself consistently. He also loves ds1's Buzz Lightyear - also with easily-triggered sounds and voice. Otherwise they're all just ordinary dolls, some soft-bodied, one jointed; one has longish hair, the others have none.

I think whether or not the doll is interesting if probably more important than its gender, unless perhpas his parents might have an issue, in which case a boy doll would probably be 'safer'.

dd666 · 01/12/2007 22:24

woolworths or asda had some nice dolls hth dolls are fine for little boys!

janeite · 01/12/2007 22:28

Thanks. I don't think his parents would mind. I was thinking of quite a traditional baby boy doll.

This www.elc.co.uk/toy-42734?&category_id=605&parent_category_id=534&parent_category_id=534 sort of thing - but it's out of stock.

Any ideas for dd2 as well please anybody? Or is she destined to be look on in envy at dd1's presents instead?!!! And all this has come about because I had bought NOTHING for dd1, so have had a mad rush to get her some presents and forgotten all about dd2 needing more.

janeite · 01/12/2007 22:32

Thanks dd666 this looks good - but again out of stock - arghhh! Will have a look in our local Woolies this week; don't think I can stand another visit to town.

Bump for the "Sunday Girls". Whether or not you're nursing a hangover after the meet last night, a little light browsing for present ideas for dd2 would do you a world of good I'm sure!

mummydoc · 02/12/2007 10:46

what about an ipod - i know not very old fashioned but my dd1 who is 8 the week after christmas is very naive/un- sophisticated ( just how i think children should be) yet she wants one and will probably download lots of disneyesque type songs and happily sing along to herself,

mummydoc · 02/12/2007 10:48

or what about tickets to go to something just the 2 of you, in the summer i took dd1 to london to see mary poppins , we had such a fabulous time, she felt very grown up and special as lots of time one- on- one with mummy .

janeite · 02/12/2007 12:59

The second idea is excellent thanks Mummydoc, as she rarely gets time just with me.

Any more ideas folks? I'd like her to have something to unwrap on Christmas day?!

How about a cheap digital camera, make-up or a set of water colours, brushes and paper

iheartdusty · 02/12/2007 13:10

does she like making things and crafts?

what about a paper weaver
a loom
knitting set
a musical instrument
puppet theatre/ marionettes/ glove puppets
something to do with nature ie flower press/ seeds/ flower spotters guide/ ladybird grow at home kit/ butterflies at home kit/

has she a camera
if so, maybe a printer
a solar system mobile
a model of the moon which goes through the phases
a telescope
a planetarium

janeite · 02/12/2007 13:40

Don't approve of make up really, so that's a no-no, sorry and she has loads of craft stuff already. Watercolours are a very good idea and a telescope is also a fantastic idea. Thanks. A paper weaver sounds good too - would love to know more about this one.

boy baby doll very very good. Ds is having one with matching pram from his auntie for Christmas and will be cock-a-hoop when he sees it.
Dd might like sewing kit - John Lewis are doing sew your own bears and cats kits which my niece has in her stocking htis year.

deaconblue · 02/12/2007 13:45

Niece (11) has posh stationary/ery? set in her stocking every year too. What about a fountain pen? Or calligraphy set? Ooh I'm on a roll now. My sister has also bought her some of those fab flowery wellies in order to fill up some space in her sack. I bought niece her own wash bag with bits and bobs in last year - made her feel very grown up

janeite · 02/12/2007 13:46

Now flowery wellies are a GENIUS idea. She would love those!

OP posts:
deaconblue · 02/12/2007 13:48

the genius bows and whoops with smugness!!!

janeite · 02/12/2007 14:00

lol - you're not finished yet, genius one - where does one BUY this genius item?

OP posts:
Lizzer · 02/12/2007 14:09

Does she like animals? I've just bought an 'adopt an animal' package from whsmith for my 14yr old sis. You get regular updates of your animal, some papaerwork and even a token toy one in the package, it lasts for a year and there are loads to choose from, it was £20.... HTH

Lizzer · 02/12/2007 14:10

Sorry just saw you liked the wellies

iheartdusty · 02/12/2007 16:08

here is the paper weaver if you don't find the wellies!

fx dream weaver

deaconblue · 02/12/2007 20:32
