I bought this wonderful book for my daughter as part of her Christmas present last year. Then I treated myself to a copy in the spring!
It's a fantastic book, full of stories, photography, poetry and 100 recipes for the Christmas season. As a hardback book with gold foil detailing it would even look gorgeous laid out as part of your Christmas decorations.

Each chapter roughly follows the days leading up to Christmas, and we've decided to read and share our thoughts about each chapter in the run up to Christmas, starting from late November if I remember correctly.

I thought it would be a lovely thing to share with someone you love. Currently £18.29 on Amazon.

FiloFaxx, absolutely, then you'll be already to start reading at the beginning of Advent. It's like all of Nigel's books, one to read rather than just to cook from. And beautiful to look at - I actually want to be Nigel Slater. I wasnt to trot off to Japan and Scandinavia for long winter holidays, and buy beautiful individually crafted ceramic bowls, and have a house that is puritan in it's sparseness, and a beautiful garden, and have a fridge full of gorgeous cheese wrapped in paper and cartons of 'sourced' coffee, and a fruit bowl with amalfi lemons and half a loaf of sourdough on a cedar shopping board.........

I would be so disappointed if the pictures are just for show and his dinner service is from Ikea and he pops down to Nandos on a regular basis.

Dillidilly · 14/07/2021 11:34

@MarisPiper92 I will definitely start a read along thread then!

So lovely to find others who feel the same way about this book.
I've only had a flick through because my daughter and I want to read it properly for the first time together, so I'm doubly excited about starting this ❤

I absolutely love this book. As soon as the last remnants of autumn slide into early winter it can always be found on my coffee table or bookmarked in my kitchen as I try out a recipe.

FilthyforFirth · 14/07/2021 13:00

Mine has arrived today. I am currently looking after my very poorly 7 month old and have my 4 year old home from nursery due to a positive case. I am hoping to sit down and have a little look this evening if I ever get them down... Thank you for the rec!

CarolinaWeeper · 14/07/2021 13:07

Thank you for the recommendation, this book looks great. My birthday is the start of November so I've put it on my wish list as an idea for DH or my mum.

linerforlife · 14/07/2021 13:10

Absolutely love this book, I often get it out as the nights start drawing in around September to help me get in the winter mood! Gorgeous book. I'm delighted to have discovered the podcast is available thank you!

LillianGish · 14/07/2021 13:17

I can't believe I'm posting on a Christmas thread in July, but OMG I LOVE this book.

Gatekeeper · 14/07/2021 13:27

this is a lovely book for Christmas as well...beautifully written and heartwarming- a joy to read!

CrapAtThis · 14/07/2021 13:36

Is it very meat and fish orientated?

As a veggie those bits would be meaningless and not something I’d like to read. But I’ve heard before how lovely and heartwarming it is 🤔.

Dillidilly · 14/07/2021 15:29

@CrapAtThis my daughter is a vegetarian, and I thought there were plenty of veggie recipes x

@Gatekeeper oh my days I love Alison Uttley! Have you read The Country Child?

I just love this book. I remember a few years ago there was a thread recommending Christmas books, I tried to get one started last year or the year before but no joy.

What else have people who love this book enjoyed? I really like Christmas at Highclere Castle for cozy feels.

LillianGish · 14/07/2021 16:59

Is it very meat and fish orientated? It's so much more than a recipe book. The recipes are really just incidental - just a lovely read in the run up to Christmas. Go on Amazon 'look inside' to start reading - I was hooked from the first few sentences.

KurtWilde · 14/07/2021 17:01

I absolutely love Nigel's writing style, I feel like he's having a conversation and I'm privy to it.

Also for any veggies interested, his book Grean Feast autumn, winter is perfect for the run up to Christmas.

Princess Marya, Susan Hill's The Magic Apple Tree is a lovely book and the chapters on winter and Christmas are beautiful.

There is an American cookery writer called Susan Branch - her books are all hand written and illustrated, a bit whimsical but a great addition to the winter cookery bookshelf.

I'm going to ask for this for my bithday at the beginning of September. Thanks so much for the recommendation.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 14/07/2021 17:37

Had a look on the Book People and it’s £90 Grin. Have now offered on a used copy on eBay - fingers crossed!! I have a love/hate relationship with Nigel. I find him both intensely irritating and strangely engaging at the same time! But his food always looks amazing so I watch him all the same.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 14/07/2021 17:38

Just looking at the Highclere book too - I’m in the process of rewatching Downton from the start with DD who has been catching the odd episode as I rewatched it myself and got hooked!! Would love to take her to Highclere one day.

BorisKilledMyHusband · 14/07/2021 17:38

It's fucking July.

FlibbertyGiblets · 14/07/2021 17:39

Boris. And it is in the Christmas topic. The end.

PurpleRainDancer · 14/07/2021 17:42

Nigel Slater collected his OBE from Prince Charles today. Congratulations Nigel.

Ooh whilst we are recommending lovely Christmas books, I love reading this one every year. It is very American, but such a wonderful read. It's a collection of short stories about ordinary people and the magic of Christmas!
