Boxing Day food (in holiday home)

Poppins17 · 16/06/2021 20:05

Any ideas for Boxing Day food?

We won’t have leftovers as in a holiday home arriving 3pm Christmas Eve and eating out Christmas Day.

We also won’t know how much general ‘stock’ will be available, so will be restricted to what we take with us.

6 adults, not vegetarian and not massive fish fans.

Thanks!

For me boxing day food is all about the cold cuts, leftover pigs in blankets and stuffing and condiments.

Could you take some PiBs, stuffing, ready made gravy, some salad, cheeses, bread and jars of chutney/pickle?

How about a lasagne or a large pie to share, easy to take sides without too much hassle.
Or take a massive pot of soup, bread, cheese, ham etc.

It's June Confused

I would take ready made party food.
There is so much around at Christmas.
Go mad in Aldi or M&S according to taste and budget, lay it all out on the table and enjoy.

Try cookfood.net. They do homemade ready meals - nice ones. They deliver in insulated boxes and they’re lovely. We are back from a week away in a cottage and bought meals from here to reduce actual cooking, just pop in the oven or microwave. We bought microwave rice, steam fresh frozen veg to accompany it.

@HaplotypeK it’s the Christmas thread Grin

We always have a traditional pizza on Boxing Day ( my son's favourite meal over Christmas )
I make the dough in the morning and let it slow rise then we all put toppings on our own.

But if I was away , it'd be lasagne , freeze in a big foil baking dish or a plastic tub to decant .
Delicious .
Add garlic bread , salad . Nice .

This is the perfect situation for the posh party food ! Buy lots and lots of canapés, cold meats, dips and take some veggies for dipping. Pate and nice bread.

Hit Waitrose and M&S for nice canapés.

(The most jealous of someone else's Christmas was the year my DB and BIL were flying in to the UK on Christmas eve so planned to have Christmas day just the two of them then came to us boxing day. They did grazing on party food all day. Sounded fabulous)

Another idea would be get a curry delivered. But id definitely go with the whole day picnic thing.

I know, but why are you thinking about this now?!

herecomesthsun · 17/06/2021 11:29

why are you thinking about this now?

the delights of anticipation are a considerable part of the pleasure of a holiday

MargosKaftan · 17/06/2021 13:39

Well we cant plan a summer holiday, with any sort of hope it's going to happen. Might as well plan events that can happen.

StevieNix · 17/06/2021 13:42

We always do a buffet of party food, We probably enjoy it more than the actually Christmas dinner Grin
Or on occasion we have done pizzas or jacket potatoes - although the jacket potatoes were especially nice as we had the leftover meat etc from the day before with a few extra toppings available as well

Poppins17 · 17/06/2021 16:52

@HaplotypeK because we have bought the holiday home stay as a gift for my moms 65th birthday and I’d like to have some loose plans to talk through with her once we have given her the gift / told her about it so she’s not stressing about our plans

Shepherds pie

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 17/06/2021 17:27

Pulled pork freezes really well so you could make it well ahead of Christmas and transport it frozen. Serve in rolls with coleslaw. If there's an oven, you could also take some sweet potato fries. Little pigs in blankets would make nice sides too.

Can't believe some people aren't planning their Boxing Day food yet Smile

MarianneUnfaithful · 17/06/2021 17:34

I would make some sort of gorgeous freezable and repeatable dish in advance and take it. Coq au vin or boeuf bougignon or a hearty beef in Guinness casserole. Then serve with appropriate sides made fresh.

Maybe with smoked salmon to start.

And a few lovely cheeses afterwards.

Take tubs of Quailty Street etc fit the full Christmas Experience.

IHaveBrilloHair · 17/06/2021 17:38

Roast a gammon and serve with jackets and a load of bought salad bits that you can take with you.
A fancy bought dessert for afters, and of course a cheese board.

Poppins17 · 17/06/2021 19:25

Thanks all.

We will definitely take non perishables such as tubs of sweets, after eights, and of course lots of alcohol.

We have two trips before this one but I’m so excited so be spending Christmas away in the UK with my family!

It might be worth asking everyone going for their favourite food. Might get some fun suggestions.

Trumpton · 18/06/2021 08:14

I make and freeze a big bubble and squeak for Boxing Day. I used to make it fresh but one year froze some leftovers and they were fab.
That and cold cuts.

Yes - and what are you eating on Christmas Eve ?
If you have a buffet would you want another buffet on the Boxing Day ?

Are you going to be stuffed after Christmas Day and want a really late dinner ?

My choice would be a massive brunch on Boxing Day (we're vegetarian so there would be LindaMcCartney sausages, Quorn bacon, beans, mushrooms, potato scones , eggs (scrambled or fried) and lots of toast . Then not move for the rest of the day Xmas Grin

furstivetreats · 18/06/2021 18:37

I think a precooked gammon is a great idea, goes well with cheese, bread, salad, pickles but also stuffing, roasties etc if you want. Someone can cook it and bring with them.

MustBeTheWine · 19/06/2021 23:34

Can you take a cooked turkey or gammon with you? You could have a cold meat and cheese platter on boxing day with some pickles, chutney and bread?
